There was some talk of doing Eurovision for Asia which would involve Australia.

I've always heard about it, but I've never actually tuned in before. I was invited to a "semi-final" party though, so soon I'll know what the fuss is about.

Are these acts nominated by any regional committees or do they freely apply and represent their countries upon acceptance?

I think they are nominated by the national broadcasters. The selection process is different in each country, some have a comitee, some do a national pre selection, some do some kind of talent show.

Do any of the Eurovision artists ever become commercially successful? As someone who has only heard of the contest in passing, I was wondering what the big deal was... I always thought it was an American Idol-esque thing for all of Europe, for some reason.

oh jesus, this is the eurovision? my girlfriend works or the organization that puts together the entire competition and i'll be having to sit through this shit during their office party come this saturday. having been completely ignorant american, she did warn me i'd be in for a shock. she was right, i'd much rather stay at home and endure a constant 10 hours of epic sax guy.
