It's like the proverbial nebraska teen who goes to hollywood to become a starlet and ends up taking faceloads on a casting couch in a back-office.

Peter Molyneux is a real life monkey's paw.

Also

Quote
"That's when they made us play Godus for three hours straight. It was our choice when to get up and stop playing, but I didn't want to seem rude."

Quote
"But in terms of my first experience of a God game, it was interesting. And it was pretty fun. I did get bored of it, like after an hour-and-a half, two hours."

But Bryan and his friend soldiered on, out of politeness more than anything else. "I didn't think they had anything else organised," he says.

Konrad "FuriousMoo" Naszynski, who backed Godus on Kickstarter before joining 22Cans as an intern, has been thrust into the limelight as the new lead designer of Godus, and it's down to him to steer the ship towards meeting the expectations of an already estranged community.

And then there's the RPS interview that starts out like this:

RPS: Do you think that you’re a pathological liar?

Holy shit, John Walker. :lol

You'd think having a kid would calm him down somewhat, but I guess he's still in the cranky sleep deprivation phase. He's going crazy in that interview. Molyneux is an overpromising, optimistic fool, no doubt. We all know this. But Molyneux is also giving John incredible leeway here. Probably because he feels he has to let himself be chastised a bit (which may even be a smart move, fuck if I know), but good grief, Walker is in full on petulant child mdoe here. "But you said-...!" We all know, fuck! :lol

Reading on, Molyneux is now accusing John of wanting to drive him out the industry. What the hell is this inteview, holy shit.  :neogaf

Quote
Peter Molyneux: I must have given about fifty thousand hours of interviews and I’m sure if you go back over all of them you could– The only result of this is, I’ve already withdrawn mostly from the press, I’m just going to withdraw completely from the press.

[Since this interview was recorded, Peter Molyneux has done at least two other interviews with press on the same subject, including one with The Guardian which he says will be his last.]

Quote
Peter Molyneux: Let’s carry on going. Let’s make me more depressed.
Quote
Peter Molyneux: What are you doing at the moment John? You’re trying to find any crack you can to actually destroy us. That’s what this article is going to do, isn’t it?
:heh

Honestly, I'm not sure if Molyneux is just desperate or maipulative. He constantly adresses John by his name and it's starting to creep me out a bit. It's like he's arguing with a spouse.

I'll stop live-blogging my progress through this ridiculous thing, but please everyone go ahead and read it, it's something to behold. :lol

If I can say one thing n Molyneux's defense, his history of over-promising and under-delivering is legend. If you backed Godus and were then stunned to see them miss dates and drop features, you haven't been paying attention and that's on you.

Yeah, best approach is to just give them enough rope to hang themselves with, reading the interview I think less would've been more.

Fuck Peter Molyneux though

I don't like an interview that starts off asking somebody  "do you think that you’re a pathological liar?" but as others have said its probably time Molyneux had an overly harsh interview compared to the probably hundreds of softball interviews that have allowed this situation to end up where it is.

I think the problem is that Molyneux never really understood how much of an issue it is when you pull what he pulled during a kickstarter

It's one thing to dick around with Microsoft or EA money and over promise and under-deliver. It's another when you go to the public and ask for money and do the same.

For him its just business as usual. But this time it was inevitable that the backlash would be much stronger because of the funding.

It's hilarious reading the interview. It's clear he's never had to deal with someone asking him real questions and not pandering bullshit PR garbage kind of questions.

What gets me is that talks over John AND has the balls to try to twist his quotes. "I didn't say that!" So then why is he able to quote it?

Or Molyneux would say something to the press that dev team members weren't even aware of. Some team members, for instance, found out about Molyneux's new game, The Trail, first from articles and then directly from Molyneux. This happened, according to one person who worked on the team, immediately after Molyneux called a big meeting about how everyone needed to improve on company-wide communication. "He squirreled himself away with two other people for two weeks," said the source, "and when he emerged, he was basically like, 'We're moving everyone onto a new project called The Trail. What's The Trail, you ask? Well, you'll all find out—separately!"

He's been blowing hot air since 2000/whenever Fable was being teased, never ever expected anything from any of his projects

Quote
Jeesh, so much hate here. I probably have more reasons for that than most, as I dropped around 100 EUR on Godus on Kickstarter.

Sure he overpromised and underdelivered. But that's no reason to be a jackass about it on the internets. Same goes for the RPS interviewer who Mr Molyneux so generously calls a "journalist".

I don't want gaming sites to turn into gossip rags, and talk about games more of a discussion about revenue streams and monetization than gameplay and story. It's already more popular to talk about how much box office movies make than about the movies themselves. EG opens the day with The Witness sales figures, so seems like we're already there with gaming.

Fucking hell keep drinking that kool aid :rofl  The gaming industry isn't rainbow candy land where inspired devs are cooking up amazing experiences with love and care because they love dedicated fans. It's a cash driven entertainment industry

You mean Carmack? Carmack actually didn't really "fall" unless you count the quality of his games but even then post-1999/Quake 3 he had solid (not GREAT but solid) releases.

So it's kind of turning into Hydrophobia then - thing that is kind of crap that they refuse to let go of and put lots of time and effort and funds into making it be kind of ok when they could put all those resources into making something actually good.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Why tie yourself to the Godus brand as if its something that has a large fanbase or people have fond memories of. Just create a new thing to at least drop the publicity baggage by changing the name.

Godus Wars [official site], the second unfinished Godus game from development team 22Cans, costs $15 on Steam. And until a few moments ago, once you’d battled through the first continent of its combat-focused spin-off, to play any more of the game cost another $5. Yup, this new “free to owners of Godus” early access, severely unfinished game included surprise premium in-game purchases!

Eh, Cliffy "retired" until recently. We'll see how Lawbrakers does but I wouldn't say he "fell" because he was hot-fire with Gears and his earlier stuff he did as a teen during the DOS era.

Carmack is still semi-successful and was always a tech person so him going to Occulus isn't really a "falling" but more a side-step to getting out of the game industry where his "talents" aren't really being used especially since his engines got passed by due to Beth taking over his company and not wanting to license them in a world of Unreal Engine now.
