So, apparently the US mens b-ball team only managed to beat Lithuania by 5 points.  DREAM TEAM indeed.

To be fair, the competition is much better today than it was in 92. That Dream Team wouldn't be blowing teams like Spain away today

Also, they are down Dwight Howard, Dwayne Wade, Derrick Rose, Blake Griffin etc due to injury, and it is no longer possible to make a 'best of the NBA' squad without non-US citizens like Dirk or Pau. The team they have is pretty crazy good but the Dream Team was a one-time deal and it's dumb to compare everybody else to it.

Lithuania had 3 ties and 2 leads as well I think. And they were missing their starting centre as well. USA played some shocking defense really.

I would love to see them play Russia

"One of the big threats we've got to take care of, and what we've paid attention to, is the illegal marking in the box on their corners and free kicks," Herdman said. "Some of the blocking tactics, which are highly illegal, we'll keep an eye on them in the game. We've starting working on that in training without trying to injure our players."

Herdman said he also hopes to "raise awareness" of the issue with game officials when Canada plays the U.S. in the semifinals on Monday at Old Trafford.

"Obviously they're trying to free up a key player, but in a very illegal way. ... The U.S., it's what they do well," he said.

Top 15 maybe, but it would be quite easy to put together a perfect roster without any foreign players. The problem is injuries. Guys like Harden and even Worstbrook wouldn't be on the team if Wade and Rose were 100% healthy and willing to go.

You can make a really good roster but you will not get the best of the NBA - a Dream Team - without foreign players now. Can't be done.

Anyway, nobody is calling the current incarnation a Dream Team. Trolling it as such is pointless. Everyone knows that global basketball is way better now BECAUSE of the Dream Team.

Silly hypothetical Olympics discussion - if Jordan had somehow been able to enter 20-plus basketball-related Olympics events (I dunno - 3 on 3, HORSE, 1 on 1, synchronized dunking doubles...), how many golds would he have? Would he ever have lost to anybody except in a 3pt contest?

Maybe. But based on his 88-89 season where he basically played PG as well as taking all the shots (8 assists/game, 32.5pts :o), I don't see why he wouldn't be a serious candidate to win there too. I think he could have averaged 14 or whatever assists a night for multiple seasons no sweat, just by taking less shots or not playing with other ball handlers like Pippen or Ron Harper

Possibly, I just don't think he'd gold.  Sort of a pointless discussion though, I'd rather discuss what Lebron would win.

If there were those same events for him...dunk contest, 3v3, 1v1, defensive routines, passing, dribble routines...Lebron would gather a sizeable amount of golds.

Well, the point I'm making is that categories like swimming and gymnastics give opportunities for major talents to acquire massive medal hoards that dominant athletes in other categories simply cannot. Phelps constantly refers to Jordan as being his inspiration but it's really hard to compare the two in any meaningful way. I mean, Jordan won his gold in 1992 after playing cards 'til 6am, filming a documentary all around Barcelona for hours, then playing 36 holes of golf...sure he had bigtime help but there is no doubt he was the premiere player on that team, and he won that gold basically in his sleep, at maybe 20% effort.

Paul
Kobe
James
Durant
Howard
----
Rose
Wade
Love
Griffin
Bynum
Westbrook
(college player)

Who would you replace with Dirk, Manu, or Parker? Dirk over Love/Griffin, Manu over Kobe, Parker over Westbrook? A perfectly healthy all-American team would have no problem being the absolute best team without the best foreign players.

Man, Rudy Fernandez sold the SHIT out of that foul by Touriaf at the end of the game.  Biggest theatrics since Pierce and the wheelchair.  I don't blame Batum after seeing that ridiculous show.

As for some previously asked questions I'll chime in:

Good point by Cormac, you can't make a true NBA Dream Team without international players.

Second, could the 'Rest of the World' beat the current 'Dream Team?'

I don't think so, because I think that takes away one of the international team's biggest strengths, the amount of time they have spent playing together.  A team like Spain or Argentina just have played so many games together over the years, because their top guys play in every tournament.  One of the US's advantages right now is that we finally have some cohesion and not as much turnover year to year, so a lot of our guys have played together too.

A Rest of the World team would lack that teamwork necessary to beat our Dream Team.

I always thought back in the day when we sent college all stars that we would have been better served sending NCAA Champs of that year instead, send a real team that has played the game.
