you should probably play the ds version. the battle system is going to be more accurate. i wasn't a huge fan of the dual screen system, which is why im trying out the ios version.

playing chapter two right now, using the touch screen isn't bad. i can't figure out how to activate the partner pin, which is annoying

Um... yes its amazing game Borys. Just know if you dont like how it controls the DS version was the "original" way to play.

Hunh.

Word for word that's almost how I feel about Persona 3.

But be careful, Borys: I didn't say the best JRPG.  I said the best thing to happen to JRPGs.  Like Chrono Trigger, it cuts right through the heart of some of the biggest problems with the genre, and while it hasn't been as influential as CT, I have noticed many of its finer traits showing up in a variety of games.

I've seen it said before that Chrono Trigger somehow broke the mold of the JRPG genre (either at the time or in general) and I don't get it. It very much followed typical JRPG structure and tropes and mechanics for the most part - including some glaring flaws typical of the genre, like non-boss battles being almost entirely meaningless and challenge-free - it just happened to be a very well made JRPG. Even not having random battles wasn't all that unusual, even at the time (especially given that it was implemented in a way that had almost no substantive impact on gameplay, with avoiding battles being essentially a vacuous pseudo-action minigame, avoiding battles being pointless given how easy they are and how plentiful recovery items are, and many dungeons coming down to a sequence of unavoidable battles anyway).

CT has rpg story pacing tied down completely.

You're always doing awesome shit.

In the first few hours alone, you end up traveling through time into the past, go the post-apocalyptic scarred remains that are the planet far into the future, you then go back to your timeline, stand trial, go wayyyy into the past to kick DINOSAUR ass and get drunk on caveman booze, then you go to a mystical floating island in the sky. Chrono Trigger is a success because it's always involving and always interesting. I think this pacing helped a lot of games learn from it, games like FF8 in particular, in terms of story pacing.
