Retro City Rampage

Any love for this game? It looks super RETRO AND NOSTALGIA

Only $15, available on PSN and Steam right now. I'm holding out on Xbox, but I might cave for the PS3 version.

I was never a big fan of the first two Grand Theft Auto games. The perspective kills it for me. I might get it from a Steam sale or something.

Is the PS3 version a #YOPO game, and is it discounted for PS+ users?
I'll bite if the answer is yes to either.

Edit: oh wait, did it even end up good to begin with?

Got the game on Vita...it's cross-buy/play, so I'll transfer the save to the PS3 and play it on the big screen when PSN is updated on PS3 later today.

THIS GAME IS FUCKIN' AWESOME.  True to its name, the game has retro-game (and movie) references all over the place.  The game plays great, too- I like that they added modern elements like being able to take cover and using the second analog stick to shoot in any direction.

There's a lot of attention to detail, too.  You can even select different color schemes that mimic 80s consoles and PCs!

Try the demo...it may use an overhead perspective, but it plays 100 times better than the 2D GTAs ever did.

I was using my Saturn USB pad, but I think I'm going to switch to a 360 controller for the analog shooting now. Definitely a lot of references too in the short time I've played.

Does it seem like a meaty game for $15? Apparently its only like 30MB... that's kinda small for a $15 game.

I LOL'd at Doc from Punch-Out!! owning a bike shop.  Even some classic memes made it into this game!

The cross-play system works great, too- you just select the option to save to the cloud on one system and download the save on the other.  Takes about a second on both systems...way better than the stupid "transfarring" system that the MGS Collections use.

Yeah, I'm not going to buy a Vita, so cross-play means dick-all to me. I'm holding out for x360.

Don't know if anyone has reported the game's length yet.  I'm about 13% done after a few story missions and a couple of side jobs.  The game also has arcade challenges where you try to rack up points/kill a number of NPCs within a set time limit.

This is a lame way to break it down, but to me it feels like a game that should've been $10 if only because other $15 games have been so good.

Depending on how you feel about parodies and references, you may end up liking it less or more.  It's all really dense and self-aware but that's the entire game.  It's a game of references, not a game with references (like Matt Hazard, or Conker, or Simpsons Hit and Run, or something).  The actual game part is mostly a straight take on old 2D GTA games.  oh, and the filters and stuff look authentic.  It's fun.

I'm curious about that too.  There's a weird part in the game (minor spoiler if you care)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
that's splosion man.  A while back there was a trailer that showed Splosion Man in the game.  In the final game he's replaced with an original character, but it's still the same sequence from that trailer.  And at least I think Splosion Man was published by Microsoft.

So maybe the delay is to get that in the Xbox version.

I just started losing track of the references in the game - within the first few minutes of the game. It's just one after other - it's incredible how many things they crammed in.

Yeah, it's all Microsoft here. Brian (the game's dev) finished the game in June and was constantly pushing the game back so he could try to do a simultaneous release but ended up just giving up on that idea. It might have something to do with the fact that initially it appeared D3 was going to publish the game, but they're seemingly no longer in the picture. It was self published on PSN.

That's probably it: doesn't MS require a publisher agreement for XBLA, while PSN ostensibly supports self-publishing?

^ yeah, something along those lines. Also, games can sit in MS certification limbo for months, and MS will simply sometimes just put the game up for sale when they feel like it.

The quicklook sold me, gameplay looks fun and the writing is brilliant.

Let me know how it is. My 800pts that'll be spent on either this, Ms. Splosion Man, or that Halo 4 map pack.
