So, when will Online launch exactly?

And is there an extra download required? Any idea on how big it will be?

officially? tomorrow.  realistically? in the next week when the servers aren't dying.

probably updates through a patch.   it shares all its assets with GTAV and I don't think it will be a large download.  worst case it's 2gigs since that's the xbox live cap, I think.

I agree that it won't be a massive download, but FWIW a required install was against Microsoft policy at one point. I'm wondering if this is the first game to be allowed to actually flat-out require one.

I have tomorrow off, so might get started on this (by way of stealing my flatmates copy)

Is there any online pass BS? Or have R* kindly limited that kind of stuff to microtransactions and IAP?

No-one yet knows, but I didn't notice any kind of code coming with the game. Theoretically, it's just a title update.

Just like red dead so expect douchie assholes killing at the spawn areas just to take your money. It's sad that they didn't fix that issue that made red dead online such an annoyance.

EDIT: there is a passive mode which turns off player on player kills.

There are several glitches in RDR, one of which makes you invincible, and one of which allows you to travel underneath the map and pop up/down wherever you want. They've been there for years, and Rockstar has never patched them out.

Still don't have a new ps3. I could go pick one up right now but i wont. I will have one when the time comes and it won't be out of "neccesity." At this point I'm learning to try to make all forms of entertainment not feel as...crucial to my life and well being. At one point, GTAV was the only thing I was looking forward to in coming months because my life is that low now. That too has passed. Nothing wrong with enjoying entertainment, but craving it and needing it seems quite unhealthy.

Still have not played Saints Row IV or GTAV and I'm surprisingly fine with that. That makes me feel good. This philosophy stuff may be working a bit.

Seems to be pretty random who the bug affects, I got in after a little trouble and no corruptions (yet).

It's pretty fun. Part SP missions, part MP missions, part Free Roam - pretty much like RDR and GTA had a baby. Seems like there's a ton of stuff to do. Gotta find a way to change up my aiming, "assisted targeting" was selected but greyed out so I couldn't change it, I got in a gunfight with a griefer and was inadvertently shooting every bystander around him, haha.

For that inro mission, I found two Coquette cars around the Rodeo Drive-ish area, but the game claimed that they were both being tracked already. I ended up getting an old T-bird looking thing.  Then it says, enjoy racing with this, your new car. There is NO WAY I'm taking this boat to a car race.

I mean, I should probably be allowed to steal cars in a game named GRAND THEFT Auto. Now there's all this hassle with rules and shit. It's like that "Bad Sport" thing they have where if you're a griefer you get that "Bad Sport" label and only get put in sessions with other griefers. Isn't being a bad sport in a game about stealing, murdering, and selling dangerous drugs...kind of the point?

Sleeping Dogs was a brilliant surprise, for sure. I really liked the way it handled guns. It was great that guns were basically off the table most of the time. It was simple to conceal the pistols, but if you drew it in a crowd, all hell broke loose. And it was impossible to conceal a shotgun, though you could get one from any cop car.

While I'm thinking about guns:

In GTAV, the Left Bumper brings up the weapon selection wheel while on foot, but is the (legacy) control for shooting when in a vehicle. I've accidentally popped off so many times...

Exactamundo.

I can't believe they kept that control scheme in. Didn't RDR keep consistent controls on horseback? I bet there was a big to-do in design over this.

Is it still D-pad left/right in a car to switch between viable weapons?

I remember in GTA IV, I was pissed off at the end, because I can't call my cousin for free taxi cab rides anymore. On my second playthrough for fast completion, I went the other way, and it STILL doesn't let me call cabs. So, basically, SCREW ALL of Nico's phone contacts. They all suck.

yeah, online is straight busted.  I managed to get in, which sound luckier than most.  Firstly, the character creator...why?  what is this pick your grandparents nonsense.  And then tutorials, tutorials, long loading times making you think the game broke.  Technical problems aside, it's a bad way to the start the experience.

I had a lot of fun during those ten minutes between the tutorial and indefinite loading screen.  Potential is there if they can fix it.  Definitely feels like a beta test.

There is a lot of potential fun to be had here when things eventually end up working but yeah right now its so fucked, its really not worth playing at the moment. There is only so much they can do on their end without a title update/patch specifically for the online stuff. In that sense the people who end up waiting for PC or next gen versions will end up with a much smoother experience when they try online.

It took me like three attempts to get through the tutorial stuff because it kept breaking. I'm in the game proper now but that is also equally buggy.

I know I'm logging in at non-peak times for the USA, where I assume the bulk of online players are experiencing problems. I was on tonight,  answered a few calls for Jobs, one server had a bunch of Iranians who did NOT know how to race, another was a drug snatch where I was just trying very hard not to die while the better player Winston Wolff'd the other team.

Everything worked about as well as I could hope.

Maybe it won't need another Title Update; maybe it just needed some server load balancing.

Also, "Passive Mode" seems half-assed. If passive players are on foot, they can't shoot or be shot at by other players. One of these passive players got into a car and tried to run me over, so I shot the shit out of him. Bet he was surprised.

It's actually pretty clever how they handle the aiming stuff. If you have your settings set to free aim in sp it will put you in free aim free roam sessions and then when you search it will also search for free aim sessions. If you join your friends and the host or session has a different aiming system, it will tell you it is switching it to match what everybody else.

Huge flaw: No "replay mission from beginning" - especially when actually replaying a mission

Instead you either have to Load a game, or complete the mission, or die and sit and wait for the loading so you can go back around and replay that mission again

Online seems to work now, mostly.  Every server I jumped into had eight or fewer players.  Sixteen is small enough for the city alone, but with eight it felt like a ghost town at times.  Another problem that can't be addressed (in this iteration of GTA Online) is how inorganic everything feels.  It was pitched like: meet up with friends, go bowling! the actual experience: go stand in this circle, go through menus, stay awhile and listen (to stevie wonder as the game takes several minutes to load in and out of a five second round of arm wrestling).  The moments when it works are tons of fun.  Simple objectives like 'go steal these cars' is more entertaining when you and another player have an impromptu race to see who gets to the cars first.  Then when you collect the cars, you drive off in separate directions to split up the cops chasing you, eventually meeting up at the dealership to get paid.  It's just not a very elegant process to get to those objectives.

I'm sure you can have some fun in the open world/sandbox when it's populated.  Had a moment where this one guy randomly decided to kill me, and I managed to stay away long enough for him to lose interest.  But I followed him a bit, and when he went to buy some clothes, I drove up, shot out his tires, and parked across to street.  He managed to get a few feet into the street before all four tires popped.  And then I did donuts around his car while he tried and failed to shoot me.

also, if you drive near some sketchy ladies at night, "You need more cash to pick up a prostitute" pops up with the option to spend real money to buy fake money on some virtual prostitutes in your video game :clap

May be better today. PS3 and 360 got a late title update yesterday.

Quote
Update: The latest title update has now gone live for both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

A new GTAV title update to address issues in GTA Online is now available for PlayStation 3. We're currently working with Microsoft to get this update published for Xbox 360 as soon as possible - we expect it to be live by sometime overnight. This title update addresses a number of issues that GTA Online players have been experiencing in the initial days of launch this week, including:

Fix to address the issue where players were stuck launching a session before the Mall or Nothing race in the online tutorial.
Fix to address an issue where bank & cash were deleted incorrectly in some cases.
Fix to address incorrect amounts of cash being dropped when the player dies in Missions and Last Team Standing.
Fixes an issue where the Character Switch Wheel would disappear after a failed load.
Fixes an issue where attempting to enter GTA Online via the Character Switch Wheel caused a black screen.
Fixes an issue where temporary characters were overwriting main characters.
Fixes an issue where players were losing apartments and the money they spent on them.
Fixes an issue that caused Story Mode missions to be missed in some instances.
Removes the autosave that occurred when transitioning into GTA Online from within GTAV Story Mode to prevent the chance of Story Mode saves becoming corrupted.
Several tweaks to GTA Online including improving overall stability.

Also today, we’ve launched the suite of GTA Online features at the Rockstar Games Social Club website including GTA Online player stats, ability to browse, rate and bookmark Jobs to add to your in-game queue to play, Job Playlists and updated Crew pages – as well as the GTA Online Guide which is a growing collection of tips and tutorials we’ll be updating frequently. Stay tuned for more GTA Online Social Club features that we’ll be creating and launching regularly in the weeks and months ahead.

You can also check out the newly updated www.rockstargames.com/GTAOnline for an overview of everything from the types of dangerous yet profitable Jobs to pull off to competitive and structured game modes to play and much more. When it works and you're playing with a group of friends or even competent strangers it can be really amazing and sort of the way things will be in the future.

I was doing a mission where I had to take a car I stole to Simeon when I noticed a helicopter was following me. I was like fuck. This dick-head is gonna kill me. So I complete the mission and get a cutscene and mentally I am getting myself prepared to fight. But after the cutscene the helicopter dude is just on the ground doing nothing clearly waiting for me. So I hop in with this random dude and we just fly around the city just looking at shit. After that while in the helicopter I setup the next mission and say just auto-fill and invite anybody. So it starts that mission as I parachute out of the helicopter and then I'm in another part of the city with another random where we proceed to do another mission together and it works perfectly. We drive to a location in separate cars with me following him. We steal the objective car and hop into together. I'm the gun man so I kill any resistance. He's driving so he loses the cops. And then when that mission is over we split up and go our own ways or we could have stuck together just doing races or whatever.

I mean on the next generation of hardware I expect experiences like this to be the norm.
