I like that he walks out of the room looking at the NES.  When Nintendo was good.

Nester looks way too old.  He has a kid?   :o  Where is Howard?   :'(

Video game magazines in the 80s and early 90s were so totally rad n' awesome.

Then the web evolved and made them irrelevant.   :'(  It didn't help that the quality of the mags went down, too- I remember when magazines were filled with pics of new games, strategies, tips, maps, etc.  Instead of being page after page of shitty "games journalism."   :yuck

I have most issues I think.  It's a spotty before the 90+ isues from when my brother was the subscriber.  Since then I just kept getting them for collection sake alone, because I'm dumb.

All I remember from my Sega Vision days is gameboy trolling and waking up with a 32X and wondering where it all went wrong :-\

I can depressingly confirm that Nester is not too old to be canonical. :sob

It's true this made me nostalgic for being 8 and getting  the first 2-3 years of Nintendo Power. Then I realized that was 25 years ago and shot myself. I am posting this as a ghost.

Also, did Nester name his kid after the NES MAX? Cause that's pretty baller.

My favorite game mags were OPM, EGM, and Gamefan.

As a kid, I'd read the occasional Gamepro as well.

When OPM died out, it never had this kind of fanfare and its story was far more sad than Nintendo Power's ever was. Nintendo Power has been irrelevant for years. Meanwhile, OPM was in the midst of a huge quality increase and the rug was cut out from under them by Ziff Davis. The fact that monstrosity PSM took the mantle to become the official PS mag was the day game mags died.

Gamefan was the SHIT in the 90's...

:bow Japanese game coverage :bow2
:bow Insane 90's graphic design :bow2
:bow Halverson's LSD-fueled rants :bow2

This mag was nuts. :bow

Gamefan was fucking terrible.  The only thing it was good for is giving people warning about how awful weeaboos were to become later on.

gamefan was full of fanboys who raved about EVERYTHING. every fucking game got a high score; if a game was a good port than it didnt matter how it actually played. they even gave 90s to fucking bubsy 3d :lol then the 2d vs 3d debates came along and they whined about every series making the transition and cried about the good ol days. fuck that weeaboo bullshit.

Gamefan was awesome. EGM was starting to suck by that point. Gamefan may have been drug fueled optimism, but they did enjoy games for gaming. EGM got to a point where it was just tons of ads and a bunch of people who sounded like they resented having their career tied to gaming.

In the 90's? Really? EGM only reached that point in the late 2000's.

Yeah, the 90s. It began at the very early parts of the 32-bit/54 gen. Gamefan may have gone weeaboo, but EGM went the other way.

When I was in elementary school, I had a friend who subscribed to Nintendo Power.  Once he was done with them, he lent them to me.  It was pretty interesting seeing all of those B-level NES games that they would cover.  I wound up remembering the names of a lot of them and when I got an NES emulator years later, I had to play those games.  Turned out, most of them sucked ass.
