There's a good idea here, but not now and not with this company behind it.

Whip this bad boy out in Japanese metro.

Prepare to be laughed at.

You mean prepare to have people cower in fear at your giant american cocku-sized gaming console.

how?  there'll always be a gigantic phone/tablet market that exponentially outnumbers any possible device with traditional controls.

i think you're forgetting that those crappy touch-only games are currently eating away at the handheld market and are basically relegating all handhelds and home consoles to a default "niche" status for the rest of our natural lives.

The casual market has always had its limits, and there will always be companies looking to exploit and thrive in niche markets.

This is going to tear Andrex apart.
not as heavy as andrex's heart right now

Oh right, I guess you guys wouldn't know. I already own an Android gaming handheld. In fact, I've had it since July 2010, when the makers sent me one for free for some web stuff I helped them out with. I got it long before I got my first Android phone, the Galaxy Nexus.

It was one of, if not the, first Android handhelds: the ODROID. Actually, I think mine might have been the faster ODROID-S.

(Image removed from quote.)

It's pretty crappy today, but back then it handled pretty much all Android games perfectly, better than almost all the phones. And the buttons were crappy but still an improvement on what was out at the time. Google engineer Chris Pruett basically said the same thing when testing his game on several devices.

There's really no reason why I'd be upset over someone making another Android handheld. I just question some of the design decisions nVidia has made with this one.

Looks like someone photoshopped a picture of a WonderSwan.

did someone ms paint a picture of skyrim on this thing or are they really pushing the streaming game idea?  lotta "if"s but if the latency is low enough, and the price is low enough, maybe one day...

I always get interested in these failure-bound handhelds.  I have a tapwave zodiac and ngage qd somewhere in my closet.  though, even I didn't bother with the gizmondo.

Looks hideous. Have fun walking around with a handheld game controller.

Now if they could actually get some diverse games on there, but probably a lot of ports and shit.

I'm skeptical about the nVidia Shield. Is there really a market for a high end dual stick portable game console?

And he'd know better than anyone! :lol

From the games I've tried, Chaos Rings, Dead Space and Mass Effect were good.  Also, several FPS with names I can't remember got to be way better than Resistance on Vita.

The Bard's Tale port was also really decent.

FF Dimensions is also out on Android now, but it's $20 last I checked. Will wait for it to go down in price.

I like how android library doesn't benefit fom having good games, but having games better than the worst vita game. Ff dimensions is a shitty cell phone game kids. Gameloft FPS games? Mass Effect tie in game? Fuckin please. Only legit game on that list is Chaos Rings.

Cost will be $349.  Preorders starts on the 20th.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/14/4329008/nvidia-shield-price-specs-release-date-preorders-begin-hands-on-preview

It's something I'm interested in for streaming PC games, but since I have no interested in the Android part, $350 for a peripheral is too much.  Also comes down to how well the streaming works.  Wii U and PS3/Vita aren't nearly good enough examples of streaming games.

Are there any Android games that take advantage of this Tegra 4 720p hardware? Or will we be stuck playing angry birds on it?

I touched one of these today. All I can say is  :rejoice :rejoice :rejoice

The only bad things I could say are that they put your wrists at an awkward angle (think Dreamcast) and it's weighted poorly (very back heavy), and heavy overall. But besides that it's an absolutely incredible piece of hardware, it feels very well built. I tried some boring android game on it which was fine, but the best demo of it was playing Skyrim on it. There was no lag or lack of response from the controls, it felt quite natural. The other good part is that they were running the same game on a monitor behind it and you could see it was running in some low res low detail mode, because it was a blurry jaggy mess. It was probably running at 720p since that's what the Shield screen runs at, so you get a bit of a free performance boost from using lower detail modes.

Couldn't be more impressed with it, just wish it was sub $300 instead of $349. Have gone from mildly interested to trying to find ways to justify buying one to the gf now.

This came out or is coming out and there are reviews out.  Mostly positive.

Anyone order it?

Streaming sounds good enough that I'll likely pick one up whenever I upgrade my GPU, when it's cheaper too.
