I would just like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that as recently as within the past year and a half people have offered up the opinion that Vince McMahon is NOT in fact a senile old lunatic, just sayin

Vince must just have a hard on for Rowan. It's kinda funny when Cole/Graves/Philips have called him "a big redwood" or "Big Red" about 500 times now. That must be what Vince thought of on the spot and now insists he be called that at every opportunity.

Takeover card for this Saturday is stacked brehs

Gargano vs Cole, 2/3 falls for the NXT championship (1 fall is an "old school wrestling match," one is a street fight, Regal gets to pick the last one if it goes to 3 falls)
Velveteen Dream vs Pete Dunne vs Roderick Strong for the NA championship
Shayna Baszler vs Mia Yim for the NXT women's championship
Street Prophets vs Undisputed Era's O'reilly Autoparts and Laurence Fishburne Jr for the NXT tag team championship
Candice Larae vs EVIL IO SHIRAI

The Candice vs Io and triple threat matches will probably be some of the best matches of the year; the match Matt Riddle had vs Roddy last takeover was low key one of the best matches of the year.

Also- if the 3rd fall of the championship match isn't a Duchess of Queensbury Rules match wtf are we even doing, Regal???

Candace/Io will not be MOTYC or even MOTN contender, because Candace sucks at wrestling. There's a reason why she literally hasn't done anything in NXT for 2 years beyond be Johnny's wife, it's because she's bad at wrestling and promos. If Johnny hadn't have taken off for them I'm sure she wouldn't have been signed. Much like she hadn't and there was no interest the for 2 years and even after being in the MYC they took a while to do offer a deal. She started doing all the intergender stuff on the indies to stand out because she was wildly outmatched when wrestling with the other indie women.

Io might be the GOAT and it will probably be a decent match, but it's going to be 100% on Io.

Will also :yuck if Mia Yim is the one to break Shayna's reign. She also sucks and I wish they would stop trying to make her a thing.

Also also....It's time for Johnny to move on, but I am 100% certain he will face immediate death on the main roster, or go to 205 where he might as well not exists anyway. 8 of the last 9 Takeovers (including this upcoming one) will be headlined by him. He also had a main event as part of DIY. The record for most Takeover main events before him was Samoa Joe at 5, spread over two title reigns and two feuds. He's won every title, been the top face, had a heel run, two different redemption arcs, even did the mixed tag stuff for a while. He has literally nothing left to do but have random good matches, but a call up is death. :stahp

From the latest Observer Radio

SummerSlam match card sits at Eleven matches as far as Meltzer knows with Cedric Alexander vs Drew McIntyre being added later. Ali vs Nakamura & Roman Reigns vs Daniel Bryan will not be happening on the show. He speculates later that Reigns & Bryan could still have an angle on the show, but they won't wrestle.

Aleister Black vs Sami Zayn was done on Smackdown instead of SummerSlam because Vince rewrote the whole show (Smackdown) and after he was done he had an hour left to fill.

Daniel Bryan's career changing announcement storyline has been scrapped.

Summerslam could have had Ali vs Nakamura, Bryan vs Roman, and Black vs Zayn, but instead will have: Goldberg vs Ziggler, Trish vs Charlotte, KO vs Shane O, Balor vs Wyatt, none of the 3 tag titles or IC title being defended. I love Vince rewriting the show an hour before airtime but having a whole HOUR left over and just pulling matches from SS to fill time :lol

It was always going to have KO vs Shane, that's been building for a while

The other two wtf matches (Charlotte vs Trish and Goldberg vs Ziggles) are almost certainly a byproduct of someone saying "hey this show doesn't seem special enough let's get some legends on it or whatever" and remembering that Trish lives in Toronto, Charlotte had no program going at the moment, and that Goldberg has a sad after everyone in the world (justifiably) shitting on his Saudi match with Taker. Also that they can feed him Ziggler because nothing Ziggler does matters, he exists to lose and put people over and take bumps, all of which are essential characteristics for Goldberg opponents to have, especially in this blighted year of our lord, 2019.

I "watch" RAW and SD on the hulu replays the next day while I'm working on my 2nd monitor- my job is slow as fuck and boring so having it on while I'm working is fine, and I get hulu for free with my spotify subscription, so wheeee. Mostly it's just background noise. Anyway, they show the entire SD show on the replay, but Raw is always edited down to 90 minutes and they always, always take the best match out of it because who would want to watch that? So, I didn't see the Andrade vs Rey match from this week. Fun times.

I think the Women's tag title match that happened on RAW this week was originally supposed to be on Summerslam too and got pushed up, so chalk up another one.

Really, I'm fine with not every title being on every ppv- someone realized that if they're doing dual branded ppvs they can't feasibly do that and fit in other wrestlers/feuds unless they run a bunch of triple threats, ladder matches, whatevers. But the titles excluded from this show (IC, all the tag titles) have been shit on hardcore this year. So it stands out.

I swear I've read they have big plans for Andrade 10 times over the last year+ and every time all it means is a match with Rey and then being left off the next PPV. He's' been on the main roster since April 2018 and has had ONE singles match on PPV: Against Balor in Saudi Arabia.

Per the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there have been many changes made to the SummerSlam card over the past week, with much of it playing out on Raw and SmackDown.

That includes Paul Heyman apparently making the decision to do the women’s tag team title change on Raw, and a Sami Zayn vs. Aleister Black moving up.

There could be further changes coming to the SummerSlam card and, in fact, the Observer notes those changes are “likely.”

Flattest Takeover in quite some time. Apparently the Saudi show getting Backlash cancelled and NXT having to do a random unconnected Takeover with no build led to them having to change their taping schedule because Full Sail wasn't available when they needed due to schedule changes, so they did 6 weeks of TV in 2-3 days without knowing exactly who they'd have available for Takeover, which is why the last month and a half of NXT TV has been so random and most of the build for the matches on this Takeover were done in promos and backstage stuff.

Street Profits vs TUE: KOR/Strong is the superior TUE team  :hmph This never really got out of second gear.

Io vs Candace: Candace is not that good at the wrestling thing, however Io is one of the GOAT female wrestlers so it turned out okay but this whole thing was supposed to be Io vs Kairi, in an angle that made sense. Candace was a last minute replacement and it really doesn't make sense. They had like 2 interactions on TV before Io turned heel and they made it seem like they were BFFs for years.

Strong vs Dunne vs Dream: Lmaooooooo at Dream coming out to The Mountie's theme :lol :lol :lol This also felt flat to me, lot of blown spots. Dunne/Strong came off that way on the weekly show recently as well.

Shayna vs Mia Yim: Another casualty of the Saudi show, Mia Yim replaced Bianca in this angle because they didn't know or think they'd still have Bianca by the time they got to Summerslam. Even though it's been Bianca's angle since before WM Takeover to go full face and finally be the one to end Shayna's reign, instead they just plugged Mia into that spot and acted like anyone should give a shit even though Mia Yim is not good at all. And Shayna's reign has gone on so fucking long no one gives the slightest of shits. She should have dropped the title ages ago. At this point they've booked themselves into the same corner they did with Asuka.

Gargano vs Cole: This is about the most excessive match I've seen in a grip and it was fucking dumb. Gargano is the dumbest fucking face intentionally getting himself disqualified in the first fall so he could skip to the second fall that was a no DQ match but then not immediately winning it after beating on Cole with a chair. It's even dumber because Gargano was in control when he got himself disqualified and then did a lol shrug and still lost the match like a fucking idiot. This reminded me a lot of the HHH/HBK 3 stage of hell match where they were just jerking themselves off to how epic they could be because time (and blood in that case) = epic, this is a match that had a TOP ROPE CANADIAN DESTROYER as a near fall 50 minutes into the match. :camby Cole looks like a nerd who won by a fluke, Gargano looks like a nerd for costing himself the match twice, and they spent almost an hour killing every possible finisher either could ever have.

I love Gargano, but he really, really loves just throwing the kitchen sink into his matches- everything has to escalate and be bigger than before. I still think the best match in this run was the one on one vs Andrade from before last year's Royal Rumble I think, it was just a regular ass match. Sadly Cole and Gargano, as much as I love them, are true exemplars of the ROH indie wanker spotfest mentality that just takes shit too far to where it becomes dumb.

Tag match was good, Io vs Candice was great (don't listen to Stro) and the triple threat was pretty good. I loved Shayna vs Mia but if you don't like Shayna you're not gonna like it, so whatever. The first half or so of the main event was good but it ended up being unforgivably stupid in the pursuit of like 9 Meltzers or whatever it is Cole and Johnny are doing.

I literally skipped 10 minutes of Gargano/Cole in the final fall and they were doing the same shit they were doing 30 minutes before hand. That shit would never end and it was just like...let's do Okada's finishing stretch sequence, but for 45 minutes. :camby

I don't know why they're acting like Cole/Gargano is this epic blood feud when they went from 0 to 100 immediately and skipped all the middle stuff. They STARTED with a 2/3 falls match :why then a regular match, then a gimmicked 2/3 falls match. :why This match should have been an iron man match, especially if they were going to go that long anyway. Hopefully Cole's next feud is a chance to reset the NXT main event style for a bit and make it less ridiculous with the never ending kick outs and reversals.

Summerslam pre-show stuff.  The Edge spot should have been on the PPV.

Quote
We see AJ Styles, Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson approach Finn Balor backstage and start hassling him. They say this is The OC's world, and AJ is going to finish off Ricochet for good tonight. AJ says he's been getting good luck wishes all week, but Finn is the one who might need good luck tonight. Finn says he's not going to play Bray Wyatt's mind games. AJ says it would be a shame if Wyatt did to Balor what he did to Mick Foley and Kurt Angle. AJ says Balor should give them the word if he needs any help during his match.

Quote
Oney Lorcan vs. Drew Gulak (c): Gulak's Cruiserweight Title is on the line in this one. Gulak connects with a leaping knee to Oney's face right off the opening bell. Gulak wrestles Oney down to the mat, and the two men trade holds now until they get up to their feet and have a stare down. Oney fires up with a series of chops to the chest, but Gulak is able to take him down again and regain control of the pace. Lorcan comes back with a running blockbuster for a two count, and Gulak rolls out to ringside for a breather. Lorcan follows him out and nails the Champion with some stiff chops to the chest. Back in the ring, Gulak grabs Lorcan and applies his modified dragon sleeper, but Lorcan reaches the ropes to break the hold. They brawl back and forth in the ring now, and Lorcan grabs Gulak by the beard or face and starts slapping him. Lorcan hits a series of running elbow strikes, and the Champion is down. Gulak pulls on the ring apron, and when the ref goes to fix it, Gulak hits a shot to the throat of Lorcan. This leads to Gulak hitting the Cyclone Crash for the three count.

Winner & still Cruiserweight Champion: Drew Gulak

Quote
Apollo Crews vs. Buddy Murphy: We're told this is Buddy Murphy's first match as an official member of the SmackDown Live roster. The opening bell sounds and Murphy immediately starts off with a running knee to the face of Crews for a two count. Murphy follows up by stomping on Crews in the corner. Crews fights up and they run the ropes, and they collide in mid-air and both men are down. Crews is up first and hits an enziguri on Murphy, then he follows up with more strikes. More kicks from Crews, then he misses a shot and Murphy fires back with a kick of his own. Murphy looks for a flying cross body off the turnbuckle, but Crews catches him and hits a Samoan drop. Crews follows up with a standing moonsault for a two count. Murphy and Crews fight in the corner, and Murphy gets the upper hand with some kicks. Murphy follows up with a running powerbomb for a two count. They fight out to ringside, and Murphy throws Crews into the steel steps. Murphy gets in the ring and comes flying back out with a suicide Swanton Bomb on Crews on the ringside floor. Murphy throws Crews in the ring, but before Murphy himself can get back in, Rowan comes out of nowhere and attacks Murphy. Rowan beats down Murphy at ringside and the ref calls for the bell.

Winner via DQ: Buddy Murphy

Rowan continues to beat down Murphy, and he powerbombs Murphy into the ring post. Rowan yells at Murphy to keep his name out of his mouth. The screen cuts to backstage and we see Daniel Bryan watching on a monitor.

Quote
Elias comes out to the ring for a song and starts trashing Toronto. WWE Hall of Famer Edge comes out to interrupt. Edge gets in the ring and hits the spear on Elias. Edge heads to the back and poses on the stage for his hometown fans.

Quote
Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross (c) vs. The Iconics: The Women's Tag Titles are on the line in this one. Nikki starts off strong against Billie, and then Nikki tags in for the double team. Billie turns things around, then tags in Peyton for the double team. Peyton works on keeping Nikki grounded now, and throws her down by the hair. Peyton and Billie trade frequent tags now to continue the offense on Nikki. Nikki finally fights back, and Nikki and Peyton both take each other down by the hair at the same time. Alexa and Billie tag in, and Alexa cleans house. Alexa wastes some time taunting Peyton, which leads to Billie booting her in the face. Nikki breaks up the pin attempt. Peyton tags in, but Alexa fights off the double team, and Nikki takes out Billie. PEyton misses a kick, but she connects with a backbreaker for a two count. Peyton wastes some time throwing a temper tantrum, and Alexa drops her. Alexa follows up with the Twisted Bliss for the three count.

Winners & still Women's Tag Team Champions: Nikki Cross & Alexa Bliss

As novelty acts go, he's fine. He doesn't stick around long, and he's got some charisma to him. He is the direct opposite of Shane McMahon, in other words, whose welcome was never extended and thus could never be worn out.

Takeover was great. The guy from the Street Profits is incredible. I loved Io Shirai's match. As an aside, I would like to marry both Io and Charlie Caruso.

Eh. Not really. I watched the last half of it, and outside of the pin (Ricochet off the top of the rope with a somersault, and then AJ catching mid air to do a Styles Clash for the pin), the crowd sounded dead and it went too long with some dead spots, even in the short time that I watched.

I don't get bringing back Goldberg. His whole gimmick was getting the hugest push of his time, as in the longest winning streak I remembered. Do people actually like him?

As novelty acts go, he's fine. He doesn't stick around long, and he's got some charisma to him. He is the direct opposite of Shane McMahon, in other words, whose welcome was never extended and thus could never be worn out.

Takeover was great. The guy from the Street Profits is incredible. I loved Io Shirai's match. As an aside, I would like to marry both Io and Charlie Caruso.

AJ styles wins.

Worth watching the whole thing?  I paused it for 20 minutes or so to go take the dog out.

Eh. Not really. I watched the last half of it, and outside of the pin (Richchet off the top of the rope with a summersalt, and then AJ catching mid air to do a Styles Clash for the pin), the crowd sounded dead and it went too long with some dead spots, even in the short time that I watched.

They did the Low Ki vs AJ finish from 2002 :leon

But yeah why the fuck would you cover up Ricochet's torso :what

It wouldn't fit the character, but the first Wyatt theme was so much better than this.

Implied neck snapping too?  JFC.

Good to see him go over at least- I half-expected them to have Finn win.  That's how it felt with Bray before.  :doge

Finn is supposed to take a couple of months on leave after Summerslam. Kind of hope Finn brings back his Demon persona after he comes back.

Why the hell did they have all this shit on the pre-show, only for this PPV to end at 10:30 PM?  Better than going late I guess.

We've got at least 3-6 months before Vince starts randomly jobbing Bray out to shitty midcarders and expects the crowd to still treat him like a threat, then another year or so of dumb, terrible booking with maybe a US or IC title reign thrown in to "legitimize" the Fiend before we rinse and repeat

:money

Other than the Fiend's entrance, the show was a largely forgettable, consequence free chicken fingers advert, so standard WWE 2019 fare is what I'm saying. For being the "2nd biggest ppv of the year" this was completely emblematic of what is wrong with the promotion- in a vacuum, most of the action was perfectly serviceable but lacked any sort of importance when you factor context or long term story telling in. Tell me again why it was a great idea to make "the brand" the star and not develop/promote new stars, Vinny Mac
