a shitty pop Bore to rival pop GAF
« on: February 13, 2013, 07:14:39 PM »
i listened to this fun. song that was awarded song of the year at the grammys? i realise a grammy is worthless but i just don't understand how this is even considered. it is hookless and artlessly postured, just so flat and i find the lyrics insulting (especially if considered a generational statement).
the only upside was that fun. are for some reason on Fueled by Ramen? so it helped me notice that the video for the new Paramore song is out:

i've already been listening to this song and i do like it. it has assuaged my post-josh+zac paramore fears brought on by monster.
i love the kit, super live and massive and obviously impeccably played (zac was replaced by ilar rubin for this album). the toms round 3.30 are so epic and yeah it makes sense that the producer of this record, Justin Meldel-Johnsen, also produced Hurry Up, We're Dreaming. the chorus isn't as strong as any of the best stuff from Brand New Eyes but of course (it's Paramore) there are lots of other wee mini hooks and i've listened to it thrice in the last hour! i think the lyrics are so much more appealing here than in We Are Young. they have more vitality and optimism where fun. are wittingly endorsing a lack of progress emotionally and socially?
hayley looks neat in the video, reminds me of

for whatever reason. and i lol the naive simplicity of the love conquers all ending. though i also thought it possible the war was being fought over hayley and she decides to give herself to the bad guy to save her people from suffering. might be the better reading.

anyway i don't know if there's room for this discussion on this board but there seemed like there were some posters in the carly rae thread last year that might be interested.. i also looked into the avril album from last year earlier this morning but that's for another post.
thx

tegan and sara's new album is totally sellout but I kind of dig. I think the reason I am so okay with it is that it comes at a point in my life where I relate to selling out.

Haha, story of my life: the minute I stumble upon new acts and enjoy their music, they're declared as sellouts. Hipsters will never accept me.

Srs question: do people still like Lady Gaga?

I mean, her debut album was fun if disposable pop (and honestly a lot of that should be credited to RedOne).  Then she let the fame get to her head and her second album was fucking terrible because her head is up her own ass.  Then I saw some story where she said she was queen of the universe in a deposition.  I barely follow the pop scene much anymore but it seems like she's fallen off big time.

i like this one. co-written and produced by Ariel Rechshaid who also produced Everything's Embarrassing which i've been replaying heaps.
the second one i don't know if i like the really brash edm sound or the "90's bich" attitude. probably i do.
thx

yeah i love a lot of the tracks from Take Care (including Headlines) that have pretty solid hooks and distinctive production. Drake isn't really what i had in mind when i said pop but i'm happy for him (and other rap artists) to be included here as he's certainly popular.
i'm not sold on Started at the Bottom yet. it seems slight. the beat is cool but it's minimal and it lacks a strong chorus. i don't actually think this should be such a concern in a rap format but this is a pop thread so i'm discussing in a pop context. the song also lacks strong verses imo. and the sketch in the middle of the video is really annoying. song isn't offensive or anything, probably sounds pretty good on downers.
thx

i don't like avril at all. she has a  whiny singing voice, seems to have little creative input to her work. the precocious rebel attitude she was originally marketed with is probably the only thing i like about her. i do however love her first single, What The Hell, from last year but that is of little surprise as it's written and produced by Max Martin & Shellback. i got to thinking yesterday that those two probably did a couple other songs on her album so i checked it out. first i watched:

which is horrible. nothing of avril's "personality" or martin and shellback's usual songwriting acumen. i got to thinking halfway through the video that the lyrics could easily be an ode to heroin. how're they gonna try to make her appealing look like that? smh.
luckily i was more happily surprised by my second foray which was to this:

Smile is great! it's not as strong as What The Hell but it's probably up there in the top 10 for this duo last year (it's a long shortlist). i thought that What The Hell obviously wanted to be What The Fuck and thought they had neutered Avril's style a bit by censoring the lyric but this one has swears and everything. my main complaint is that the song loses energy in the chorus. i think it's just poorly transitioned between the choppy gated drums in the verse and that kind of 90's soft 909 breakbeat that Martin so loves in the chorus.

i should do a whole post about Max Martin & Shellback, they've had an incredible year.
thx

actually quickly on that note, i couldn't believe this wasn't a MM&SB production. they're so specifically aping their style particularly that of What The Hell:

Aye, that song is good, and Sky Ferreira in general ain't half bad.

Here's something that I recently found in my Spotify inbox... she's like a slightly underdeveloped Florence (+ Machines), so still worth a listen.

intro to the song doesn't completely to me. The Dream and Weeknd constantly do that effortlessly but it doesn't sound as natural with JT. But I do like the actual song; reminds me of Off The Wall era Jackson

Born This Way is her third album. Her second album, The Fame Monster, was when she grew into a huge phenom. She's still popular worldwide, but Born This Way was universally considered a disappointment after the dapper Fame Monster.

I just realized the other day that Nelly Furtado and No Doubt both released albums late last year and you hardly heard any of their songs on the radio. Pretty huge flops considering how big their last albums were.

They are no-names nowadays. If you are not called Nicki Minaj, Avicii, Guetta or Adam Levine you are a nobody to the music stations.

I agree although I can't wait until Nicki Minaj goes away.  In 2-3 years, I'll get what I want.

I honestly don't consider JT a guilty pleasure anymore, he's a legitimately good pop artist in my book. And I give extra props for rebuilding his image and gaining industry respect given his origins. Smart guy.

Yep and it wasn't easy to do this either.  It took a few years.

scream & shout misses the point to me. as a "club banger" it lacks personality, in that there are a lot of tracks out there that sound like this, some of them must be going on a decade old. as a pop song it's unmemorable. i suppose the chorus is supposed to be the "oh we oh we oh" bit? but i will be surprised if i can bring it to mind in 5 minutes time. lyrically there seems to be one verse and it's by will.i.am so bears little scrutiny. i will admit getting britters on the track to say bitch was a shrewd move.

something like this has more interesting production (though still p. derivative) and better melodies so i do think it's possible to write a good pop song in this recently en-vogue edm influenced style
