Too bad all that lore is buried. I actually liked the idea of Morrowind's big-bad being some sort of demigod. But then you find two ancient items in two dungeons and can beat that ass pretty easy.

Dark Elf Jesus. Morrowind's class system kinda favored that race over the others. I made a pure combat class to murder anyone that stood in my way and stomped through the game pretty easy as melee. 

Though to be fair, Magic in that game could be pretty broken as well.

The only thing Morrowind has over Skyrim is art style and main quest.

The quest log is the hardest thing to go back to. If you can call it that, since it's just a linear journal you have to page through. No quest marker/arrow either, with some legendarily vague directions. Finding Nerevar's tomb gave me a bit of trouble when I re-played Morrowind Overhaul a while ago, as it did the very first time I played the game.
That said, I don't know actually know any popular mods that change game balance or mechanics. There's a magic mod that adds mana regen, so you don't have to enchant a weapon with mana leech.

It wasn't all bad. people overstate that a lot in retrospect. it had some very good quests and questlines, and was a technical feat at the time. I didn't really even start hating it till I started spending more time in dungeons and especially Ayleid ruins. That shit is unsalvageable trash. But I played Oblivion first and then Morrowind in the same year; 2005/6? There were aspects of Oblivion i liked better, like not being fucked in the ass/thumbing through the journal/fast travel. And the combat was at least a spot less janky.

Morrowind's obviously more worth your time now though

The best part of Oblivion was the Assassin's guild and dungeon crawling. The main questline was shit. Hey go into these repetitive as fuck gates and get shit done. No. Fuck off.

I like freedom, good quests, exploration, and not having my hand held. Skyrim is Babbe's First RPG, and it has nothing to do with taking away timesinks.

The funny thing is that leveling pre-Skyrim was practically designed to prevent 'optimal' play. You have to do a LOT of asinine planning and stick to it as you play if you want to build the (pointlessly) perfect character in Morrowind and Oblivion. A telling paragraph from the UESP wiki, on Morrowind:

The moment you level up (or begin the game), plan the attribute increases you will want to take at the next level. Then plan a set of skill increases that includes exactly ten in each of those three different attributes (or two different attributes, if you would like to take one point of Luck this level), and includes exactly ten in your major/minor skills. (Or fewer, if you already have some left-over progress.) Consider the equipment and tactics this plan will dictate, and then consider whether it is compatible with what you want to do in the near future (e.g., quests, dungeon crawls, burgling, or shopping sprees).
