Yeah, but I mean in his circle. His world-view is too small. The empathy can happen even without knowing someone close to you that has gone through it, after all it's putting yourself in their shoes. But I don't think anyone in his social circle or group has brought it up because it "doesn't effect them" so he's oblivious.
