LOTR was published in a very "simplistic" time in mainstream culture. I'm actually surprised it reached the popularity it did in the 60's and especially 70's because they were far more complicated eras of anti-establishment, complexity, and social issues and a lot of the media reflected this, And yet, here LOTR is, starting a fucking cult.

Then again, Star Wars came out in 1977, so maybe people just wanted a break from the depression man.

It's a stupid comparison to make right from the outset. Martin is a descendant of Tolkien, they aren't writing at the same time. It ignores the impact that Tolkien had on the genre at the time when LotR was first released and disregards how much of an influence Tolkien had on Martin's own works [which Martin readily admits]. Martin may very well have built a nice house, but it was Tolkien that poured the foundation.

Basically, I agree with his take on Tolkien, but Tolkien and LOTR were products of their time. You cannot compare LOTR to today's fantasy writing, especially since LOTR is the innovator.

However, he does make some very astute points, and they are why I greatly prefer ASOIAF.

Personally, I take more issue with Tolkien's WRITING STYLE more than the content of LOTR. Holy shit, some of the chapters in Two Towers are

I enjoyed the original movie trilogy but couldn't even get through the hobbit part 1. That movie put me to fucking sleep.

The way Tolkien tells his mythos is mostly via song, rather than character dialogue or expose. It can feel long winded reading a song that's three fucking pages. The mythos are important, but surely they could be told in a more succinct - and interesting - manner.
