If I look for Akiba's Trip online (where the game's title is a pun on what it really is anyway), what I see for the most part is the game's selling point.  Who's he trying to fool?  The very trailer they released sheds more light on the stripping part as opposed to the "artistic and satirical" aspects that Tom's trying to preach about.

You're generalizing here, quite a lot. You're not only condemning games I'm sure you know nothing about (aside from the fact that they feature heavy fanservice), you're also condemning pretty much the entire Japanese gaming industry, saying that they've produced no worthwhile games with adult content whatsoever.

Virtually the entire eroge ("erotic game") industry would like to have a word with you about that.

Erotic visual novels are a staple of PC gaming in Japan, and a good chunk of them known for one thing. And that one thing is not sex.

They're known for having EXTRAORDINARILY well-developed characters (far surpassing those of almost any RPG), genuinely moving relationships and engaging, well-written dialogue. They do have sex scenes -- they wouldn't be eroge without them -- but the sex scenes are used to complement the story and character development, and bring a powerful emotional climax to the proceedings that's rarely seen in video games at all, much less movies or television.

I'm talking works like Air and ef -- considered gaming masterpieces in Japan, but they're all but ignored here because they have sex scenes in them, and thus get immediately classified as pornography and utterly disregarded by the masses. Because sex existing in games at all means the game in question couldn't have sold without it, apparently, which means it must be a lousy game.

The reason games like Air don't get released here at all -- and games like ef get swept under the rug when they are -- is because even when games with minimal fanservice are released, they get absolutely blasted by the media, so why would anyone take a risk on a brilliant game with straight-up sex scenes in it?

If we don't start respecting video games as a viable medium for adult content, we will never see gaming's Game of Thrones or The Sopranos. Because no one will ever be willing to take the plunge.

And yes, the game does have "requisite" content for those who WANT titillation. Because let's face it, a lot of people are buying this game specifically TO BE turned on, and to ignore that fanbase completely would not be good for sales in Japan one bit.

But is that the focus of the game? Absolutely not. It's part of the game's vast array of customization options, which also include the ability to dress any character in a full bear suit and have them act like a mime... and strip people with telekinesis.

In other words... it's a sandbox. And just like in real life, some people will choose to pee in the sand when given a sandbox, but most will just have some innocent fun.

...so the focus of the game is to strip them regardless of what they're wearing.  Got it.  Learn that you can't have it both ways since the game's content might attract one person, but will repulse other people.  It's not like you can try to market it to everyone because not everyone is interested in it because of that particular content.  Not sure what he's trying to get out of this outside of trying to segment the content by saying, "this aspect appeals to this person, this aspect appeals to this person, etc." because the underlying premise of the game is still being able to strip someone.  It's right there in the game's title.

As for the equivalency thing, stump probably brought it up cuz a lot of his study has been in sociology, and research kind of backs what he said there.  Not that women aren't into physical attraction (they absolutely are, it always places in the top three), but women tend to go for different methods of stimulation over a straight up picture.  (Not every woman, mind you, before someone gets jumpy.  It's just the trend that emerges from looking at large sets of data.)

It's cyclical I think because yes a lot of women like fanfiction/erotica, but that's also because they're not exactly pandered to with hotness anyway and they get to insert whomever they want into the character. These days I'd much rather watch Alcide from True Blood than read fanfic about him. Most official works are not catering to my particular demographic with smut beyond romantic pg-13 smut so it's like "take what you can get because this is all we have." And porn certainly doesn't appeal much. I mean yes, it can be tittilating but that's because of people like Manuel Ferrara whom are nice on the eyes rather than some gross old casting couch guy with no ass.
