A good number of the people trying to out-outrage each other (on any sides) are really fighting with each other to become the most outraged and king (gasp!) QUEEN of their side instead of convincing any fence sitters or moderating the views of others.
The idea that these are tropes to be aware of isn't enough. Even just a debate that it's normal in media and will change with society vs. something to try and intentionally subvert within the works isn't enough.
And there's probably too many people who won't even notice whether or not games are or are not subverting the tropes. Especially if they aren't games that interest them. GAF is full of threads everyday with stuff like "WHY IS EVERYTHING A FPS?"or "WHAT HAPPENED TO 2D PLATFORMERS?!?" If they can't find stuff that blatant they certainly won't catch anything more subtle.
Not to cross Opiate:
All I ask is that people be on the vanguard of progressivism, whatever that means in their time.
But even as "we" wish games to be the vanguard of art and driver of social progressivity its place does need to be kept in mind. It's debatable but I think despite what us "hardcore" might think, the basic interface of games through which the masses will interact with them isn't entirely established and standardized. To expect games to be incredibly socially conscious is something that not even movies or TV can do with their headstart and broad adoption. One of the most popular TV shows is The Big Bang Theory and it shows incredible bigotry against the intelligentally-abled. Give games their time.
And best of all in this age, it's easier than ever for "non-professionals" to actually fucking do something about it. Make your own sweet-ass socially aware game.
