I don't agree with Janet at all on either of these things. Children shouldn't be lumped into some giant gender pool but I don't see the harm in calling a child he or she. If they don't identify with that gender, and they tell you, respect that. But trying to apply this to all children is utopian and unrealistic. As for the first point, most of the general population clearly look a specific gender, and again, it is not realistic to not label people as specific genders. They are words used for description for a reason.

Have no idea why you would assume you're a bigot because you disagree with these things, not all transsexuals agree on every issue.

Some people have the idea that you choose what gender you are. Janet is one of these people. I don't think this is true for the general population. Most of them don't think about their gender or if they're in the right gender. So asking that from the general public is silly. At least to me. So I reserve that strictly for trans individuals. However, some people are the opposite and feel that people aren't born specific genders, but they choose a gender. I disagree with it completely. I was born a boy. The reason I am taking hormones is because I dislike being a man and it makes me unhappy; I prefer estrogen in my body. Me being trans does not erase past history. It happened. Janet comes from the mindset that she was not born a boy, she was born a baby. It is a position I simply do not agree with, though I respect and understand it.

Agreed. You will meet a lot of naivete and idealism in regards to certain trans individuals. This isn't an insult per se. Because transsexuals are always stuck in their head, for obvious reasons. Honestly, I think she did the movement a disservice in this case, because she is expousing really radical ideas - that tend to be exclusive to the trans community alone - far too fast, too soon. I agree with Janet and her realness campaign, but the whole I was born a baby, not a boy isn't exactly the best way to communicate trans issues. It just isn't that important.

Guys, I think we're hitting a turning point. I see something transgender related on the news or on tv or on the web (non-trans sites btw) on a weekly basis now. A lot of famous trans people are really getting the word out and representing us. And people who aren't trans are doing the same thing.

Case in point:

for a while now I've felt like media portrayals of transgender people have been demeaning and insensitive. I saw Dallas Buyers Club in theatres hoping Leto would bring something new to the character, but instead he's simply acting his ass off in yet another cookie-cutter queer.

EDIT: tl;dr Hollywood is out of touch with reality, news@11

Neither of which come from Hollywood. Both are spawned by the most progressive, technologically forward-thinking producers in the business. Dallas Buyers Club was funded by NBCUniversal which makes me think executives like this were probably involved

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Netflix IS Hollywood. Especially if it uses actresses/actors like Laura Prepon, Taryn Manning, and Jason Biggs.

wouldn't the latter make more sense? it'd be idiotic to claim "Hollywood" is equivalent to "anything in the film industry". Does that make Antichrist Hollywood? What about Baraka? These are "in the film industry" and couldn't be further from Hollywood bullshit.

Just because Netflix has money doesn't make them Hollywood. It's pretty clear businesses like it and Amazon are more in touch with the modern world than something like FOX. I'm not saying they're innocent and put consumers before themselves, just that they're far more progressive when you compare them to other media companies. However I'll admit that's not saying much.

a bunch of b-list TV actors are Hollywood now?

Do you consider Pixar Hollywood? They're based in San Francisco. Labeling Hollywood films as only movies made in Hollywood isn't realistic nor true.

You used a picture from 30 Rock. 30 Rock is made in New York.

Like I said, distro brehs. Thats what separates the big and the small in entertainment truly. Netflix is still fairly big distro, just more streamlined and efficient. Forgetting the source of where these things are coming from for a minute, I think we can all agree that something like Orange Is the New Black is relatively popular and definitely acclaimed critically?

Orange is the new Black is clearly Hollywood. The amount of hype, pr and marketing coverage, and popularity have it firmly etched as a mainstream product. If our idea of Hollywood is mainstream film, how is it not Hollywood? ???

I just saw this pop up on Netflix, and uh......

Quote
K-11 follows Raymond Saxx Jr. (Goran Visnjic), a powerful record producer who wakes from a drug-induced blackout to find himself locked up and classified "K-11." Plunged into a nightmarish world ruled by a transsexual diva named Mousey (Kate del Castillo), Raymond is truly a fish out of water. Complicating matters are a troubled young transgender named Butterfly (Portia Doubleday), a predatory child molester (Tommy 'Tiny' Lister) and the ruthless Sheriff's Deputy, Lt. Johnson (D.B. Sweeney). Ray's struggle to contact the outside world and regain his freedom seems impossible, but he must learn to navigate this new power structure if he is ever going survive and be in control of his life again.

I noticed all the transwomen are played by ciswomen.  :comeon

This is a great thing. Usually the mainstream movies just have a man play the part, which is much, much worse depending on the story they're tryin to tell. On the other hand, if a transwoman plays a transwoman I fear that she will then get typecasted. I hope that doesn't happen to Laverne.

Good luck Himuro.

I fully admit there is no way I would have the balls (guts) to do what you've done if I was in your situation. It's simply something I couldn't do. So you are already way more mature and evolved than I could ever be. Hopefully you get the acceptance you are looking for. If not, then use the strength you've developed to deal with situations you can't change.

I got home. Bad feeling about this. Neither have texted or called.  When I got home my dad's light was off, and he's sleep I guess? Nothing was said when I walked by his room. The silence tells me everything. I wrote a very personal and open letter and so far I received complete avoidance.  I don't how to feel. I always knew this was a possibility, but I kept telling myself that when i walked into the house my dad would there to hug me and tell me it'd be alright.

"Sleep on it" really can help people sometimes.

And there's an uncomfortableness to having an important subject lingering whenever you might have come back if he was still up and around. Especially if you're really thinking about it a lot while waiting.

You needed a little space with your walk, he might just need a little more until the morning.

My parents would not react very well to such a thing. I think you are going to have to balance your expectations of what you want from their reactions to what their reactions really are. Which is probably confused and very confused at best.

N your not.  It sucks that you didn't get a positive reaction for a parent for something that was so hard for you to do and something that you feel no one should have a negative reaction too.  That's got to be painful.  But you have to remember that he has certain expectations of you that were just destroyed and that's got to be hard for him.  About the only thing you can do is wait and try to e understanding*

I feel like he's afraid and is using the "wait for your mom to get home" excuse as a way to delay having to talk to you about it. It's almost like he can't form an opinion about it himself and instead has to see what your mom thinks and go off of that. Lame. :(

I'm sorry Himumu.

I really want to print that letter out and give it to my parents though. I'd change the date to April 1st and the name to Trisha, then say "April Fools" after they ask me about it. :(
