Before I got my first Final Fantasy game I played Breath of Fire 2 which inflected me with the rpg virus. My favorite game magazine rated FFVI with a perfect score and I really really wanted to get it but it was almost impossible as it was not getting released here in germany. When christmas came I put the game on my wishlist but was totally not expecting to get it, especially considering you needed either a modded console or an adapter to play it. Our tv wasn't even capable of displaying 60hz which ruled out the modded console. On christmas eve, I first got Blackthorne and later discovered that my parents actually got me FFVI+ adapter as well. I totally freaked out, probably put the N64 kid to shame as I never got 2 games for christmas before and it was actually a game I wanted to death but totally didn't expect to get. My parents actually digged through the small ads of my game magazines to get a used copy and the adapter.
At first, I didn't get the game to run, my parents were as clueless as I was because the adapter didn't come with instructions. Luckily I had Blackthorne so I wasn't that disappointed. On New Year's Eve I discovered that on the adapter I had to put the import game in the front slot and a pal game in the back slot, suddenly it worked. Spent the rest of the day playing the game to death, didn't go out for the new year firework and probably was as happy as you can be playing a videogame. Just the perfect combination of playing an amazing game where I went through a lot lot of odds to actually get to play it.
Next, iwas pretty shocked that FFVII was only released on the PSX. Couldn't afford a second console. Got it later on pc, but it never totally clicked with me. The prerendered backgrounds didn't look that good on a crt monitor, felt pixely as hell even back then. I actually didn't beat it, even though I wanted to love it.
Didn't get FFVIII, I think partly because of prerendered backgrounds and I really didn't feel the cast from the reviews I saw.
FFIX looked better but it was released very late on psx which I still didn't have and never made it to pc, so I skipped that one as well.
Still was a nintard when the next console generation came round so I sticked with the gamecube and since Square didn't bother with pc versions I couldn't play any of the PS2 games although I lost interest in the franchise at that point already because the casts in those games looked unappealing to me time and time again (cast of FFVI is easily my favorite in any videogame).
At some point I got the GBA version of FFIV, which I had played before on emus, but never very far into the game. I almost beat the game but stopped after I got beaten twice by the final boss. Overall, I didn't like it all that much, in contrast to my expectations because I thought I would get another game like FFVI. Fights where enemies attacked you twice for each of your rounds, the constant forced character changes or some scenarios like the moon hugely annoyed me.
After that I got a playstation 2 and I picked up FFIX which I actually beat, even though I didn't like it all that. Slow battles and the boring cast (funnily I liked the often hated Quinaa by far the most).
By that point, I didn't really care about FF type of stories and didn't like the cast of those games anymore so I stopped caring. Can't say any trailer of recent FF games even remotely interested me. All in all my FF history climaxed early with FFVI and no other game in the series comes even close to that game for me; FFVI is a top 5 all time game for me and I wouldn't put any other FF game in my top 50. Nowadays I prefer Dragon Quest by far and DQVIII even surpassed FFVI. Still, I want to beat FFV which I've played halfway through a couple of times on emus.
