Both the Tightrope and QUEEN music videos are fucking ace.

When I saw Tightrope I was convinced we had our generation's MJ.

Unfortunately I don't think that number will increase greatly without a big hit or a more stable schedule of releases. She's not Gaga or some other big time pop star, I don't think she can afford to put out one album every three years.

She makes her money on the road, not with albums. That applies to most people though.

She'll be fine. I don't think her album has anything on it that can get radio play but she's capable of making a radio song.

True, most artists don't make that much money from album sales especially if they aren't also writing their own songs.

I think low record sales might have an impact on an artist in terms of how much money they get for producing an album

Fiona Apple said Extraordinary Machine took an extra two years to finish because Sony wouldn't give her the money to redo the album with a new producer

Btw, I just caught Fiona's show last weekened and it was amazing.  You should see it if you can.

I finally pulled the trigger on tickets for her show at Apollo Theater on the 18th of this month. Can't wait. I haven't seen her live in over a year. Hopefully she brings Solange out for a song or something since she lives right there in Brooklyn.

Tickets are still available for her LA show

I'd go for sure if the tickets weren't just general admission.  I just hate standing in a GA pit with a bunch of smelly people.
Also, I'd have to show up 2 hours early for a decent view.

Easily the best and most fun performance I've seen from her up to this point. Not exaggerating when I say that she had complete control of the crowd. She got off stage at one point and slowly walked through the aisles alone without any bodyguards or Wondaland members.

Just saw her live in PDX at the Roseland. Absolutely mindblowing performance. There is no one else who can touch her right now.

Except I did!

I helped her crowdsurf :), held her up by her stomach. Of course she didn't need much since she's like 5'4'' and 120.

I was gonna say this is totally part of the Come Alive (War of the Roses) performance. My favorite part is when the whole band wakes up and we just get fucking crazy with it!

This one fat guy refused to get low during the performance, and she just stood there and adorably pouted in a faux-annoyed way. He just stood there and took a picture with his phone  :smug

So this album made it to the Tiptree Award Honor List.  I don't know how often music makes it to this list.

§    Janelle Monae, Electric Lady (Bad Boy Records 2013) — Janelle Monae’s lastest album is a musical work of science fiction, the latest installment in the conceptually rich world of Cindi Mayweather, a prototype android. A cross-medium Afrofuturist fable, loosely inspired by Fritz Lang’s 1927 film Metropolis, Electric Lady has dramatic scope, powered by magnetic waves of sound and rhythm.

Was this somewhat foreshadowed by Time's album review?

http://entertainment.time.com/2013/09/11/the-shining-pop-future-of-janelle-monaes-the-electric-lady/

Throughout the 1970s, Alice Sheldon wrote stunning science fiction under the pseudonym James Tiptree, Jr.. Stories like “Houston, Houston, Do You Read?” and “The Women Men Don’t See” dealt not only with aliens, but also with female alienation and gender politics, both in the present and the future. Sheldon explained the subterfuge in a 1983 profile with Asimov’s Science Fiction: “A male name seemed like good camouflage. I had the feeling that a man would slip by less observed.” In order to get the attention that her ideas deserved, she chose a man’s name, knowing that the fact that she was a woman would dominate the discussion or even be cause for dismissal outright. Decades later, Janelle Monáe is working some of these same topics of conversation into the world of pop music.

attention NY bore.

"There will be a FREE Janelle Monae show in Brooklyn on June 4! Ms. Monae opens the Celebrate Brooklyn! show series at Prospect Park.
Info: "The 36th season of BRIC’s beloved performing arts festival kicks-off in intergalactic style with a free concert for the ages. Janelle Monáe has declared herself, over the course of one EP [Metropolis: Suite I (The Chase), 2007] and two critically acclaimed concept albums (The ArchAndroid, 2010 and The Electric Lady, 2013), as the most original pop voice of her generation: at once futuristic, retro, and totally of the moment. Protégé of Big Boi, signed to Bad Boy, and the founder of her own Wondaland Art Society, She is an unstoppable creative force". Show starts at 8pm, 9th Street & Prospect Park West, Brooklyn, NY 11215."

Fine, thanks. Where are you?

I am in a cave, in Mexico.

How come?

I am basically eating and praying.

What does your prayer involve?

That this Pepsi campaign (1) becomes the biggest campaign ever.
