archer season 4 was really mediocre

this has been your drive-by dose of reality

Oh yeah, definitely. I thought we kinda solidified this real talk a long time ago, but I guess not.

So far it's animated well and it's got personality and is written pretty well.

Himu no, at least watch some magical girl anime or something so you can be like "It's from a superior culture you don't understand, baka gaijin!"

I need to finish watching Sailor Moon. Thanks for reminding me. Can't wait for the new one.

I've been watching Junichi Sato's post-Sailor Moon magical girl show, Ojamajo Doremi, which cranks up the cutesyness to 11:

(Image removed from quote.) (Image removed from quote.)
(Image removed from quote.) (Image removed from quote.)

I don't even think they fight anybody, they just use their magic for hilarious hijinks purposes like "Oh, the one girl's dad can't make it to Parent's Day at school because he has to work, so let's make a clone of him with magic! Surely this can't backfire in any way!"

Oh hey joe, talking to hito now and yeah he said this is it, haha. I'll watch after I finish Sailor Moon haha.

This is like that scene in I Heart Huckabees where Marky Mark tells Jason Schwartzman that he's going to go to an even darker place of nothingness, then it immediately cuts to him watching monster trucks.

Honestly, Jaybo, I think this thread is a great case study. I'm starting to understand why a culture enveloped around this show. It's because it's literally impossible to discuss it anywhere without people devolving into babies and crying that you like it and judging you. Which forces you to only talk about the show in the presence of other fans, hence the brony bubble.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy: the people who hate the show basically make the culture around the show tighter because they judge people who watch it. This makes the people who like the show even more annoying in the eyes of those who don't, and the lack of conversation reinforces all the things they think about the people who watch it.

It's pretty interesting psychology.

In other words, no one would give a fuck if people who didn't like the show would shut the fuck up and let people enjoy their pony show but :yeshrug gotta act hard because we're "men". lol

I disagree with a lot of that. I don't see any difference between it and Powerpuff Girls. In PPG, you've got the tom boy one, the cute one, the leader one. They save the day, they go to school, shit happens every episode, rinse. There goes your tropes you're talking about.

This is Powerpuff Girls' pilot episode as seen on What A Cartoon Show.

In what way, in terms of content, writing, and characterization, is it any different than MLP: FIM?

I'm also not understanding the glorified toy commercial thing, and Hasbro has even admitted that the audience for the show is beyond the little girl bracket. Many people older than that like it.

I'm still watching season 1. I'll get to you then.

Remember the episode of PPG where that one kid eats glue, and they all make fun of him, and he turns into a radiated glue monster, and at the end of the episode they make up and say sorry we shouldn't make fun of the special kids?

One instance:
Himu don't read, spoiler.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Hurricane Fluttershy:
In this ep, all the pegasus ponies are trying to get together to set a record for collecting rainwater for the weather production facility in Cloudsdale.  Fluttershy tries to get out of helping, because she is not a very strong flyer, and doesn't think she can be of any help.  When she was younger, she was constantly ridiculed for being such a poor flyer ("Fluttershy, fluttershy, she can barely fly" the kids would chant at her).  Towards the end of the episode, some of the pegasi get sick and cannot help, and they can barely complete the task, much less set any records.  Fluttershy sees that her friends are in trouble and need her help, and even though she has a huge fear of flying in front of the others, she does it, she conquers her fears and they complete the task thanks to her.

I don't know about you guys, but there's been plenty of things that I was made fun of when I was a kid for, and it's seriously impacted my life.  I couldn't help but feel for Fluttershy as she's being made fun of.  When she hides to get away from people seeing her fly, I know that feeling.  When her wingpower is tested, and even the person doing the testing is making negative comments, I know that feel.  It isn't easy being odd man out when everyone else is achieving.   The scene where she is able to face her fears and break through really speaks to me.
[close]

Every single episode, even the shit ones (like the Cutie Mark Crusaders episodes, fuck that shit) have something that they can teach.  And some of them really drive it home with some seriously powerful scenes.

Well animated? Not very, it's decent at best.

I think you have a limited idea of what good animation is.

Good animation is about smoothness, and being able to convey emotion from real life to a deformed object which allows empathy and relatability in their mannerisms. For this reason, MLP: FIM is extremely well animated. They've been able to express about every single emotion in a very good manner in this show so far.

For reference:

This is well animated because it's a natural look that slightly humanizes a pair of lion cubs. It makes them relatable in a way they normally wouldn't be. It's nothing extravagant, but it's the bread and butter of animation. Animation is about expression:

Compared to say, Regular Show.

This is...very basic. And it's not trying to do much more than that.

But Friendship Is Magic? The characters are highly expressive.

If you don't find MLP: FIM animated well you must not have much knowledge about the craft. Compared to most other Flash efforts that take up the tv waves, it's very impressive work. Not as good as Waqfu but still damn good

I've never heard anyone deny MLP is well animated, outside of Wrath. It's a well done show, I think you can give it that without your dick falling off.

It's not a bad show. Personally I just find it laughable that grown men discuss learning life lessons (that they probably learned 10-20 years ago) from it.

True enough all around. In any case, it's probably a bad thing. I hear that season 2 onward, the show gets a bit..whatever, in favor to the older audience. I'm not looking forward to that.

Something something comment about how someone with a learning disability would never like something else other than My Little Pony or something.

From what I've seen the show blatantly skews towards the bronies in later episodes. And yes some of it is eyerollingly bad. I'm fine with an Animaniacs type approach where the show has jokes a kid wouldn't "get" until they grew up, but there's a difference between inside jokes and pandering IMO.

interestingly...I have two little cousins who watch it, little boy and little girl. The boy is still super into the show whereas I can tell my girl cousin is starting to lose interest. You can definitely see the more male focus of the show now.

I always assumed that bronies enjoyed My Little Pony ironically, or with a bit of detachment... but this thread has made it clear that the emotional lessons of a show aimed at 6-year-old girls are actually being enjoyed and in fact taken to heart by grown men without a single BIT of irony.

In retrospect, this makes a lot of sense.

If it isn't contrarianism, it's probably for a sense of belonging.  In this thread we saw Himur0x become a brony for both of those reasons.
