Alright techBORE I need some laptop suggestions
« on: October 19, 2013, 05:13:07 PM »
Seems since 8.1 my old Hp DV6 1053cl is giving me issues. So I'm thinking it's time to upgrade to a new laptop. I've got a few requirements, the biggest being that it needs to be windows based. The others being a backlit keyboard, high resolution display (1080p+) and haswell for battery performance. I was looking at Acer's R7 but the haswell version is not coming here to the US. I'm open to hybrid laptops that have touch screens and would prefer to stick with something that has touch. I'd like to stick with a 15.6 or similar display size, no monster 17 inchers.

See what Lenovo Thinkpads have for options. The Thinkpad line was originally made by IBM and it is still hands down the most durable and reliable laptop series out there. I think Lenovo has refreshed the line to include backlit keyboards and hi res screens.

Oh, and stick with the Thinkpad series. They're made for business/enterprise and designed to survive drops and other rough handling. Don't go for the other *pads Lenovo has, like the IdeaPads, or any of their consumer-focused lines. Quality issues are rampant with the non Thinkpad lines.

I was looking at the V7 but they only seem to come in subhd, the 2nd gens are supposed to be Qhd but they aren't coming out anytime soon.

That new Yoga 2 pro from Lenovo looks pretty nice and the resolution is right. But damn that price vs specs...

This is what like half of my business school class does, and I don't get it. I guess they just love the form factor or the OS that much.

I was thinking about a Macbook but I just can't get on board the OSX band wagon just yet. If they had touch I could use them, but since they don't It's worthless for my purposes.

I was planning to replace my MacBook with a Lenovo Thinkpad soon. The only thing I like about the Mac is the size and weight. OSX is a turd.

Thinkpads are pretty damn reliable. I have a 7 year old X60 (ultraportable 12.1") that's still running like the day it was made. I use an X200 (made 4 years ago) now as my main laptop, and with an SSD and 8 GB RAM it runs W7 Ultimate 64bit superfast. The new chips from Intel (post-Penryn) definitely have better performance and power management but you'd have to be running some super demanding programs to notice the difference. I get ~10 hours on battery with the X200.

Those V5's are nice, but I'd just skip it and get a V7 most likely. I'm gonna go check out a few of the newer laptops at the MS store tomorrow. They got some crazy offers for buying a Xbox one and a new 8.1 laptop that starts up next month. So hopefully by then I'll have made up my mind.

Can anyone recommend something that's light, cheap, and good enough for running Microsoft Office and a browser? Macbook Air and Lenovo Thinkpads are needlessly expensive for basic office work.

Edit: Right now I'm eying Asus's Zenbook models.

Yeah, I needed a real OS. 64-bit Windows is the only alternative. The Chromebooks are very affordable though and not a bad suggestion if you can deal with less than optimal OS.

I ended up getting a mediocre laptop from Dell since they gave me a large discount. It's nothing fancy, but it'll do what it's supposed to.

I bought a Sony Vaio 13 pro today for the missus. It's quite a nice machine except that it's only 4gb of ram soldered on, which is fine for her but makes me a bit squeamish.

:snoop

A friend of mine had a Vaio that he got another two years out of once I upgraded the RAM and my parents Macbook would have been long trashed if I hadn't been able to upgrade it from 512MB of RAM.

Only laptops I mess with are thinkpad and mbp. Never used anything else as good or reliable. Most annoying thing about mbp is display port/thunderbolt. Other than that good build quality and it doesn't void warranty swapping out the hdd and memory.

Just make sure you avoid anything and everything made by HP and Compaq. I remember kinda liking Toshibas satellite pros but I haven't had one for years
