Why are linux die hards so angry
« on: October 26, 2013, 05:54:01 PM »
I make a post on facebook about how it'd be nice if Windows had an alternative competitor (i.e. not mac, not linux). I explain that Linux is never going to be a mainstream alternative, and my cousin - a programmer - flips his shit. Talks about "magical unicorns" (other OS possibilities) and crying, when nothing near that was said. Acts like I insulted his religion, leaves me only with confusion.

I don't see any reason why Linux couldn't be mainstream, it would just need a large enough company behind it to break up the Wintel monopoly (which, to be fair, is already threatening to slightly unravel.)

I think Android's proven that consumers don't really give a fuck what they're using, it's all down to the big players coming to an agreement to use something common so app developers can give it critical mass. With desktop PC's that was Windows, and all that momentum isn't going to just disappear. It could have easily been Linux back then if it was around, and more importantly, if Gates wasn't the smartest business motherfucker on the planet.

If Steambox is a success we could see the first instance of a traditional Linux distro being successful for consumers, but that's narrowing the scope quite a bit. Linux is already successful in many other areas (servers, smartphones, etc.), but the fabled "consumer desktop OS" has eluded it due to market effects that began in the 80s and 90s.

I think Ubuntu has come a long way and it could def be used as a Windows replacement PROVIDED you're willing to slog through a brazillion command line prompts to fix any issues. Fixing problems in Linux still requires too much CLI work for grandma, though. It needs a little more time in the oven as far as drivers and hardware compatibility go.

Linux diehards are angry because to them, fixing problems via command line is second nature, whereas the average Windows user is going to be overwhelmed fixing Linux issues.

I've had less issues with Linux and drivers than Windows and drivers.

Linux's biggest technical problem at the moment is that upgrading the distro/kernel usually breaks a ton of stuff and nobody wants to fix the process since everybody just tells you to do a "clean install" for every upgrade. It's a problem with Windows and most other OS's too, but it's compounded in Linux since there's so many separate moving parts.

The umpteen different distros are its biggest strength and weakness. Ubuntu has managed to present itself as the best alternative to Windows amidst a very fragmented environment, but I still think fiddling around in the terminal to fix problems is the biggest issue that blocks more uptake.

People have been saying "Year of Linux on the desktop!" for many years now. It's closer, but not quite there yet.

I had less issues installing Ubuntu than I had installing Windows 8 and 8.1 With the right hardware/OS combination you just need to click "OK" a bunch of times and that's it. An even easier solution would be to pre-install the OS before you sell the computer.

@Himuro: What would you want of an alternative OS that isn't provided by OSX or Linux?

This is why. If something goes wrong, i.e. one of your devices isn't recognized, it's generally a much bigger pain to get them to run on Linux than it is on Windows.

AMD/ATI have historically been troublesome in Linux because they're sluggish with their drivers, but Intel and nVidia have generally been great. If you have something with Intel integrated graphics you're even better off (obviously.) There should be some kind of "Linux approved hardware" stamp/committee for that kind of stuff to shame hardware companies into doing a better job working with Linux, and letting consumers know what the best options to buy are.

The amount of progress made since the Steam for Linux beta has been pretty remarkable for graphics drivers, though. And it's only going to get better with Steambox.

Thank you based :gaben

I've had issues with older Nvidia hardware that isn't compatible with the default drivers. Installing their legacy drivers requires some tinkering.

I fully expect to see more cheap computers with Linux-based operating systems in the future. Android is already very popular and low-end laptops with Chrome OS are like half the price compared to the equivalent Windows alternatives.

If the point is to not give Microsoft any money they could just pirate it or ask their school or employer for a free copy.

I love Ubuntu, but Unity is and has always been ass (yes, it's less assy today, but it's still ass -- especially with Amazon ads in it now.) Just get Ubuntu Gnome and you're all set, best distro with the best shell.

Linux is amazing as long as you never, ever listen to Andrex' suggestions.

@Himu there was an OS called SkyOS not too long ago you would have liked, (it's dead now) stuff like Haiku, Plan9, AmigaOS and that shit will never be it. You're just looking for the perfect linux distro which could very likely be SteamOS

Linux is alright, it's free, it works. Why the stigma against it? It's not that much different from any other OS, flippin nerds.

Yeah, most workspaces larger than, hmm, 3 people don't exactly allow you to "roll your own" when it comes to what computers get let on the network.

It's more because of the stans telling you how amazing it is and that windows and mac are trash for whatever reason because you don't have to be Geordi LaForge to get the thing to work right

I doubt Geordi could run Linux, his visor resolution didn't seem high enough to read a command line prompt

Maybe it's because I'm not a "power user" but for me Linux has always worked just fine when I've used it. :yeshrug

It's nothing special, nor do I find it hard to use. Guess stans gonna stan, haters gon hate, and nerds will separate into arbitrary factions.

Mojos right about the corporate environment. Need dat AD integration. Not sure about this driver business tho. I  managed to install gentoo on a gen 3 mac, all hardware working and even a fairly functional flash player with little fuss which was p surprising. My experience with Unix is limited to netbsd which I loathed.

For average consumers there needs to be a hardware giant like dell really marketing linux with worthwhile hardware.

Linux is still dominant on Web servers tho, and dominates mobile. But I can understand linux nerds pain, the most popular distro is quickly becoming a predominantly closed source project and their Unix based sister osx is way sexier than anything they have put out.

It's the tease of open source almost becoming mainstream then yanked away so easily by google I would find the most crushing defeat lately

Working on Linux was always way easier too. Oh you want this library? apt get install that bish, one package manager, all the repos, shit is so tight. Osx is close but homebrew and macports have a long way to go. Windows is really just a turd in this respect

Did you install this when Gen 3 was new? Because if not, then you don't know the issues some people have with hardware conflicts and having to find drivers for all that stuff that isn't truly documented in Linux yet.

Which is fine, if you're a coder and want to tinker with the hardware to write your own drivers. But for the layman/Joe Q. Consumer, that's a bother that they can't be assed to do nor learn about.

Dell has to pay Microsoft even if they ship the computers with Ubuntu so there is little incentive for them to promote Linux computers.

I've used Linux for 15 years, feggits like that still make me embarrassed to admit it. As for the mainstream thing that whole argument is irrelevant now anyway. We won, but it's a pyrrhic victory. Microsoft are more fucked, but cloud computing represents a bigger threat than they ever did at least where the freedom side of things is concerned.

I was working at a place that had to fire a dude for not uninstalling linux on his work computer.  Jesus christ.

There is a wide range of acceptability on this topic. Just the other day I was reading an article on BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), which touched on just how craptacular many work environments can be. Depending on the type of work, it can be understandable to require a homogenous work environment. Alternately, there are cases where this could just be IT foolishly making demands based on their own laziness.
