For real. I need that wuxia fix.

They are rarely brought over to America because the masses are filthy people without taste so have to get crappy Hollywood glammed up stuff no one cares about or that neuters the genre.

Dragon Dynasty took over the reigns but for all I know they are dead. They released kick ass Kung fu classics and were awesome. Their website says their latest release was in 2011.

Netflix is a dry well. They have a few good movies but few.classics. Jackie Chan has some solid stuff on here, mostly from his HK days. Since he's my cave actor ever it works for me and I can watch my faves any time. Donnie Yen has an okayish list on netflix. Bruce Lee films on nefflix are boring as fuck. Everything else is either okay to great. There's early Chow (King of Beggars), good Tony Jaa films (Ong Back for starters) but little else. It is missing stuff like Shaw Brothers films.

So there's no replacement for Dragon Dynasty and netflix's catalog is meh. What is a Kung fu ho to do?

I finally saw Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon last year. Or maybe this year. It was awesome. The whole time, I was wondering why George Lucas didn't just remake it as his Episode I.

I hate to say this but if you're watching them on Youtube it's not very likely that any money is going back to anyone involved with the films so you may as well jank them.

i know that Image was releasing Shaw stuff but that hasn't shown up for a few years

If you don't mind waiting, you can get VERY inexpensive OFFICIAL blu rays / dvds from dddhouse.com

the website is a mess to search through but it's the cheapest prices you'll likely find for Shaw / Golden Harvest / golden age era stuff

I used to import R3 HK releases of Celestial's Shaw Bros DVD's. I think most if not all of the Shaw Bros catalog has been released over there. A good chunk of them have been ported over by Dragon Dynasty, Image, and Funimation, and Well Go USA, there's still some gaps, but I don't think demand is high enough for classic kung-fu to really expect much else. Well Go USA is still releasing new stuff though like Ip Man and Tai Chi Zero/Hero. I think they're about the one company that is.

Edit: I can second Eric's recommendation of DDDHouse. That's where I used to import a lot of my stuff from.

Nice. I'm a fan of all three though I prefer Shaw so that's nice. What about modern films? I guess the bootleg stores are the place for that. I havent been since high school though haha. But there's also Well Go who releases modern stuff. Thanks for the reminder Joe.

Usually pretty good, although it depends on the release. All the Shaw Bros movies I bought had solid subtitles.

Most modern HK films have very good subtitles.
Many modern mandarin Chinese releases are back to what Tai Seng had in the 90s (ha ha remember paying those monsters $40 for Pan and Scanned Jackie Chan films?)

Well Go is great. They also are releasing some films into cinemas

Watched Tai Chi Zero. Been meaning to do so for maybe about a year or so. Solid wuxia action, but a nonsensical story, poor character development, random story tangents, and occasional weird editing make it a pretty forgettable film. Still, the action makes it and I had fun with it. At the very least, the display of Chen style Tai Chi was full, vibrant, and absolutely beautiful. I think I finally found the style I want to pursue, haha.

I also love her outfit. Fuck. Forgot how good the special effects are as well.

Lovin' that Chen style.

Not sure what to watch tomorrow, but I'm leaning on watching Fists of Fury (best Bruce Lee joint) and its knock offs and remakes.

I fully support making this a kung fu thread, and us watching weekly or every now and then movies on yt via plug.dj.

Let's watch The Iron Buddha and Yes, Madam this thursday via plug.dj if you guys are able.

Yes, Madam kicks ass, there's nothing not great about the idea to watch that.

on occasion I'll splurge on some Hong Kong blu-rays from Yesasia.com, which has a ridiculously great selection of legit, relatively cheap, english subbed and region free discs and ships anywhere to the world. I've bought from them and never had a bad experience.

and I can vouch for the excellence of the Well Go product line, great subs, great image quality. Hell, damn near every title they ever published in on Netflix too. Their discs aren't really feature packed, but it feels churlish to say that (and also the import discs don't usually have great special features either, so really, there's not much to be missing out on).

Her pop is pretty blah at first. Iirc she does a stomping strike with her hands together and it is pretty

There's a taijiquan class at a place I go to in January. I think I can study the base forms until it starts.

The lessons I'm going to are just basic tai chi/qigong and are mostly used for the self through meditation, not as a form of self defense.

I'll post a copy of what they're sending out.

Also I'm still partial to leaning on trying Shaolin wushu the most. Tai Chi classes seem...so hit and miss.

The big thing I'm averse to when picking a school is...money. A lot of them are outright trying to legally rob others in their pursuit of commercialization. It makes it hard for me to pick because so many are concerned with money rather than results. But maybe I'm being too harsh.

Okay. I went to the shaolin academy. Told the shifu my goals, he ignored them and went straight to prices. Didn't like that, but I watched another teacher teach kids. He did a great job explaining how he wanted to them to do things and corrected their mistakes while being gentle and attentive to their needs. That's the opposite of the Kung fu I was taught as a child where it felt like few students really had progress because the teacher was more.concerned with the bottom line and not his students progress. There were two black dudes, they're African and were playing ping pong with these Chinese guys. They said they'd help coach me tomorrow. They're were real nice and helpful and we immediately hit it off.

There is no contract

There is a reg fee of 30 dollars and one lesson a week is 70 bucks month. I think that is a steal and amuch better alternative than going to the gym provided one works on their wushu on a daily basis.

Those kids were really impressive btw. Nice form in that class.
