There's dressing up in a kimono and then there's painting your skin and imitating racial characteristics to cartoonish levels.

I don't really mind it in the context of a carnival character or somesuch but then again I'm not black so. It's probably true it has special significance in the US but I can't help but feel the usual "Europe doesn't feel as strongly for that aspect", while true on some level, is a bit disingenuous too. The same sort of stereotypes were popular domestically at the same time on top a general passing familiarity with American culture.
