why would we apologize for a multiple grammy award winning rap artist? it's not like we have some runner-up shit on our map.

is macklemore really that hipster? I figure he'd be too mainstream for hipsters, especially seattle ones.

Macklemore is the worst type of hipster: a mainstream hipster who wallows in ignorance ("Macklemore is the only rapper who does x") and craves social validation.

Quote
In what asinine, addled universe is “hip-hop” reducible to YouTube comments? Hip-hop is certainly a culture “founded from oppression,” but what might you know of that, Macklemore? It quickly starts to feel like the white kid in the front row of the Af-Am Studies class, droning on about his own radicalism, convinced he’s the only one in the room with Dead Prez on his iPhone.
http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2014/01/macklemore_grammy_wins_don_t_hate_the_thrift_shop_rapper_because_he_s_white.html

I don't hate Same Love, or it's message. And yes I will readily admit hip hop is the most homophobic music in the US right now, and probably second to only reggae worldwide. Yet the song is so preachy and condescending that I can't help but be annoyed. Kanye West called out hip hop homophobia years ago when it wasn't safe. More importantly, he pointed to his own flawed view on the issue, his own use of derogatory language towards gays, etc. I have more respect for those who can discuss this stuff while admitting they are imperfect than those who sit on a cloud judging (see: Lupe Fiasco). The best rappers are those with the most contradictions, the most flaws.

I have to give kanye credit; the man wears leather skirts and pants that make his ass look giant. no lamestream hipster runoff wannabe would do this.

has it actually gotten worse (more crowded etc whatever) in urban/downtown thrift stores after that song broke? That would amuse me greatly if true. I have no real thrift stores around here to base any trends on.

Right after there was a rush to the bins I'd say. Then they realized that the bins is full of sketchy people, smells and people doing insane type feeding frenzies as soon as new piles of crap come out. It's not for tourists what so ever.

Except some specific items a lot of my wardrobe these days is JCrew/Abercrombie/GAP/Random Designer/Banana Republic/etc that I procured from the bins.

To be honest it's harder to find good men's stuff anyway. Most dudes I personally know wear stuff till it falls apart. It's not donated or tossed because "not in season."

half the appeal is finding stuff in the pockets. I even found some dude's checkbook once; almost tried to cash a check but guilt got to me. plus I didn't want to go to jail.

edit: yeah, men's stuff is either some jizzed up sports team junk or mothballed old man blazers and pants. very rarely will you find anything particularly interesting or not threadbare.

eh, the only seattle 'grunge scene band' I dug was nirvana, wasn't really into mudhoney/pj/soundgarden/alice in chains and the like. not that it matters too much, I was more into the indie-type scene (barsuk, sub pop, kill rock stars etc), I saw nirvana as noisy cousins of that music vs the aforementioned.

I like Nevermind and some songs from In Utero. But Bleach is the album I'd rate that highly. They're definitely my least favorite of the big grunge bands, not to mention by far the worst choice of the "greatest band of all time" moniker.

Wait, I'm confused.  Macklemore was all fucking awesome and shit and people said he could do no wrong, and that he was doing so much for the LGBT community.  What the fuck happened that flip-turned that upside down?  Cause all I've seen for the past week has been how much people hate him now.

All I know is that "Can't Hold Us" is the second best Player of the Game music in 2K14 after "All of the Lights." Some of the others don't even start before the highlights are over. It's like come on, can't you make edited ones to fit instead of playing from the start.

If it wasn't for this kind of thing and mashups I would probably have no clue about popular music.  :-\

is macklemore really that hipster? I figure he'd be too mainstream for hipsters, especially seattle ones.

Correct, if a Seattle hipster likes Macklemore he is probably several layers removed from first-order Macklemore fandom and just posing against some outer hipster group.

Aren't hipsters the new mainstream anyway? That look is everywhere now. The "true" hipsters that went the extramile regarding outlandish looks were always a minority. The type of people that called somebody a cigarillo because he wore skinny jeans 5 years ago are wearing these themselves nowadays so they can fuck the girls with licorice glasses.

i go to shows every week and i'm not sure how i attained this ignorance, but it's truly a gift. i've still never heard more than 30 seconds of wrecking ball or that song by the onerous cunt with the hatefully small face who filled his video with naked chicks.

there's this grunge/mid 90s alt rock revival going on in punk right now. we're getting some good stuff out of it:

You douche bags need to apologize for Starbucks first

Also, 93% of electric guitarists are influenced by Jimi Hendrix. And the rest is Buddy Guy. Because Jimi cancelled a show just to see Buddy live.
