Ever pray for bad things to happen?
« on: February 11, 2014, 12:05:56 PM »
I don't really subscribe to a god, but there have been times in great turmoil where I have said a little prayer to something just because it made me feel better for a short amount of time. A spirtual 'popper', as it were.

So, I got to thinking, if prayer can 'work', why can't it work to influence bad outcomes also? So, when I had a difficult breakup, I prayed that my ex-girlfriend would get AIDS or Hep-C. I came to find out that she contracted chlamydia through a mutual friend a year later.  Close enough.

Then a few years later, after I got married, my wife was having a difficult time with a co-worker of hers. So on a lark, I would say some silent prayers wishing that this woman would get cancer or have heart disease. Then she DID get cancer. She had to quit her job to recover and never returned to work.

I was pretty freaked out about it and never touched my dark magical powers again.

When I was a kid I would wish the most hateful twisted stuff on my parents when they punished me.

Then I would feel guilty afterwards.

You're a wizard, ToxicAdam.

Can I employ your dark magical powers so that my boss gives me a raise?

I can only use my powers to create disease and illness. I don't think there is a disease that makes people more generous.

Dammit. A plague wizard. Guess all the money wizards are too busy running banks, stock markets, & Fortune 500 companies to give a shit about us plebs.

Anyways, to answer your question: No. But I have involuntarily dreamt about bad things happening to people that I have known and some of those dreams (with slight variations) would play out in those people's lives.

TA, if you wished any bad stuff on me in the past, it hasn't happened yet. But I'll let you know.

There have been some politicians and other movers and shakers I've wished a fatal heartattack on or something along those lines. I suppose I really should stop reading the news and just keep my head down...

My mother likes to say (and presumably think) that "God will punish" whoever she doesn't like. When they get sick or something else bad happens to them it's only proof that there's some sort of cosmic justice. When something bad happens to her, it's the devil's work, i.e. someone else wished something on her. Funny how that goes.

Yes, everyday I pray that someone somewhere gets in car accident and everyday it comes true;  this dark causality is the foundation of my faith.

My friends used to joke about it and call it the "Kevin Curse." Whenever someone would do me wrong, or a place of business would screw me over, inevitably soon after something bad would happen to that person or the place would go out of business. I never outright wished bad shit to happen, it just did. Pure coincidence, or more likely these people or businesses had bad shit happen to them because poor behavior and business practices invites failure/catastrophe.

I don't believe in Karma. Too many shitty people live long, prosperous lives for that to be a real thing.

But that'd be boring!  I vote we stick with believing the human monkey paw theory.

I think the way it works is that the fallout they cause is deserved, i.e. the people they shit on intentionally or un-intentionally deserve it, so it's fine. :heh

Considering how many people I know lost their jobs (and some their health insurance/cars/homes) 4-5 years ago thanks to a relatively small group of bankers and real estate folks whom they will never meet, and who are probably still making stupid amounts of money, I'm gonna go with Eel on this one.  Lots of lousy behavior can come back and bite you in the ass, but if you make sure to pick the right kind of lousy behavior, you'll be good to go, and there's no cosmic force directing the consequences of your actions at those who deserve it.

As my chemistry teacher said in HS, "shit rolls downhill."

What were you going to do with their dead?  This board does not support necrophilia.

One of my mom's old (schizophrenic) co-workers used to cause her all kinds of manufactured drama. She used to regularly openly pray to god to take my mom's "only son," which would usually lead my mom to come home and breakdown in tears. Needless to say I used to wish very dark things upon that woman. Fortunately, neither of our prayers were answered... so far.

Should have just said, 'Don't worry mom, you never had a son, just a fabulous daughter' then gave her a camp wink.  That would have stopped those tears.

I've attempted to will car crashes on people who drive badly, even when I'm on the motorway and their crashing in front of me would almost certainly kill me. It never happens. Deep down I know its only momentary hate, and that I'd hate to be in crash, so maybe the powers that be sense my conviction is weak.

Or maybe its a godless uncool universe with no supernatural force powers ;(
