With today's internet speeds it seems silly to gauge browsers by speed. I judge today's browser by features. Chrome has a lot of feautres and add ons like ad block plus that you cannot use on IE. Never mind, better security, better email integration (I use Gmail), and app and extension support. It isn't even close. Who cares if it takes ie 2 seconds faster to load a page if it has crap security, crap feature set, crap customization?

different people expect different things from browsers. As someone who grew up using 56k internet, I'm tired of looking at the about:blank page for any period of time waiting for a page to load. Considering how much time I spend browsing the internet, those seconds or fractions of a second add up into a shitload of time where I'm doing the virtual equivalent of waiting at a stoplight. Fuck that noise.

In any case, my post was a response to Oscar's comments about speed, not the customizability of the browser. But I guess you can't sleep at night if every single one of your posts isn't about you.

IE 11 touch mode is pretty great, it's my favorite of the tablet browsers I've used. I'm surprised no one's ripped off the awesome "swipe right to page back" gesture yet.

Browser speed is very important to me because my computer is a giant pile of shit.  I think for add-ons I only use Adblock.

Cool. If you've got a slower computer, I'd definitely suggest not using chrome because it creates multiple versions of itself, which uses up a bit more ram.

A zero day is pretty bad no matter how much you try to downplay it.

Of course, if they're referring to the fact that 26% of people (and dropping) outside China even use IE at all anymore, then sure, the concerns were overblown. Maybe Microsoft is secretly hoping people abandon IE so they can keep taking their sweet time fixing critical security issues.

How long did it take this time? Four days? How pathetic. But I guess when all the good engineers have jumped ship to other companies this is all we can expect.

Microsoft should just accept the L on IE at this point and put the money into making their own chromium browser or rebranding and reskinning the thing (IE) to be so far away from IE that people think its new. IE has very negative brand baggage

Even if MS made a new browser and scrapped IE, I'm sure no one would use it. Much like with Bing, Windows Phone, Surface;etc MS has shown tremendous lack of ability to sell tech to the masses. I think MS' name is tainted at this point unless it has Windows, Office, or Xbox name on it and two of those things (Windows, Xbox) have had terrible press recently.

I got my parents to switch to Chrome (and Gmail) pretty easily which made family tech support about 80% easier, but my efforts to convert my grandparents have not been as successful.

I did get Chromebooks for my mom and grandma, maybe that's the best roundabout way to do it.

giving up on ie would basically mean giving up on Windows - a very high % of people's time on pcs is spent in a web browser, so if the browser they're using doesn't bother to support a new windows feature (which for third-party browsers is frequently the case), it may as well not exist. For a recent example look at high-dpi support - chrome on windows sux at this, ie has good support, but I see reviews of high-dpi windows laptops cite chrome as exhibit a that "windows has poor high-dpi support"  ???

Note if third-party browsers implement better support for windows features to compete with ie, that's actually good for MS - they make their money off of windows, they don't make any money from ie directly. We saw this with ie9's support for hardware acceleration for canvas and svg and such - the third-party browsers put a lot of effort into catching up, and at least for a while graphics performance across all the browsers was better on Windows than other os (I'm not sure if this is still the case)

Slow phase IE out, then while replacing it with a new browser. So few people use IE as it is, that no one will notice.

Eh. I fell for that before. Sometimes MS strikes gold and delivers a high quality product (i.e. Zune, OG Xbox) but it quickly falls to the way side because it's deemed as a failure. Happened to me too many times to get invested in another MS product ever again. Even good and commercially viable MS products (Windows 7) are quickly dropped. Meanwhile, Apple has used OSX for like ten years. Not that I'd use OSX over Windows, because I'm not a macuser.

As for Metroid IE, yeah you're right. My bad.

Zune HD was superior in about every way to the iPod Touch as an mp3 player and it still bombed because it was never a relevant product. I know all of two people with Windows phones irl (Mupepe and a girlfriend). You may think me bringing up Zune HD isn't pertinent, but it ties wholly into Windows Phone's problem: lack of app support. At least, unlike Zune HD, Windows Phone can USE apps. That app problem is what is keeping it from getting off the ground, because apps are everything in today's phone world.

Here's what will happen.

MS will continue to try push out Windows Phone. It will continue to be a technical and hardware prodigy that no one buys because it doesn't have what the average consumer wants. MS will phase it out or outright kill it. Then they will release another phone, and it will be - again - another product not in line in modern consumer sensibilities with technically proficient hardware. Repeat, ad nauseum.
