you really think they won't be back? don't be naïve, andy.

Lol no.

NOBODY but MS believes in Metro, and Metro's been out for like five years. Google realized the best course of action would be giving users a reprieve from that garbage and so "Metro" mode in Chrome is basically Chrome OS, which runs on notebooks that consistently beat Windows laptops on Amazon. Windows 8 was DOA and Chromebooks are taking over.

Windows 8.1 is the best tablet OS. Android game devs seem to agree, according to all dem Steam ports  :jawalrus

it's actually kind of funny watching the mindset of the indie guys.  first ios/android was the best, but then competition stiffened and the average game started doing worse, so they blamed overcrowding and made for the steam hills.  now i'm starting to see grumbling that steam is too overcrowded, and apparently PSN is the new hotness.

so who knows, maybe windows phones are the next step!

Chrome OS will have its day!

Dat NaCl even got Squeenix on board for like two minutes. :hitler

Chrome :heart

Favorite software ever.

Android has always been a hot and cold thing with me. It's nice. Phone tech is exciting. It's easy to just drop out of things and not pay attention to Android for long whiles.

Don't really care about phone/OS wars though. It's very rare for me to go into iOS threads on GAF. I get my faux trolling out here.

If anything, those years of Linux getting dominated are probably why I don't care.

I wouldn't mind seeing Chrome OS get more used though.

giving up on ie would basically mean giving up on Windows
No this isnt even close to being true. You can bundle any buttfuck browser into windows and people will use it due to it being the default on the most popular os.

Am I the only one who uses Opera? It's actually really good. It's like Chrome, without the weird dumb shit.

What weird dumb shit do you mean?

Like not having a fucking + icon on the NEW TAB button. That's when I had enough of Google's shenanigans.

In fact, in the EU, IE isn't even the default. They let you choose.

No one cares, thats not why people use IE, people use IE simply because it is bundled with the OS

And thats why I'm saying it doesnt need to be IE. It can be anything, as long as it is bundled in with the OS.

I'm not really sure what the difference between it being IE and not being IE is supposed to be. The marketing team can call the browser anything it likes, really. The engineering team can evolve the browser with whatever strategy they think is most effective, which I guess in the extreme could be a full rewrite, but that's rarely the best approach for evolving software http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000069.html

IE right now is a decent browser, it's not awful as it was from IE6 - IE9, people however still associate the name IE with "piece of shit". So by changing the branding, I suspect people will at least try it and then be surprised that [insert new name here] browser from microsoft is in fact not shit. The first thing everyone I know does when loading a new windows OS is install Waterfox/Firefox/K-Meleon/Chrome/Pale Moon whatever floats their boat, but no one I have met in real life actively sits there and goes "maybe i should try IE".

Thats what the difference is

Microsoft rebrands their shit all the time too, so it really shouldn't be an issue at this point.

Windows Live Search -> Bing
Hotmail -> Outlook.com
Windows Mobile -> Windows Phone
Zune -> Xbox Music

Maybe if apps ever decide on a consistent place to put a find on page button, among other should-be-but-not-actually-standard navigation and commanding affordances
