I got balled out once for using the wrong kanji in a work email, because it referenced a horse, and horse is half of "baka," and though it was a clear mistake, the addressee could /theoretically/ make a big deal out of it. Getting one wrong kanji wrong from a non-native Japanese speaker.

I'm still chapped.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in Japan, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

I always use honorifics in my work emails, the Southland business community is very casual and people get a hoot out of it in the way that you get a hoot out of charmingly anachronistic behavior, but this once put me in a pickle about whether or not to address a Swiss banker I was emailing with Mr. or Herr because I'm fucking neurotic.

(I ended up going with Herr, in case you were wondering.  )

Children are the worst though, calling a little boy Master requires a certain lack of self-awareness I unfortunately possess, so instead I find myself calling 3-year-old Skylar "Mr. Smith".

It's always interesting seeing how sexist someone can get in a group email at work. The most recent being a case where we had a tight schedule to get a particular project done, and someone complained that the manager that "I hate working for women during that time of the month. Hell for me, and hell for whoever her boyfriend is no doubt." Some other dude chimed in "he's probably seeing someone else around this time." Two women were tagged in this group email btw.

We had a kid at school bragging about working in the univ. IT department. He could access any email account on campus "but only if I ask my boss first."  Not exactly the type of person you want having that control.

Yeah, it's weird how few people understand "work communications" equal "work communications." Email, IM, snotty notes left on the fridge, all of it.

It's worth noting this isn't a "millennial" issue either, I've seen plenty of old people say crazy shit in emails too. I don't get it, how can someone be so oblivious?

In my case, it's because they own the company and do whatever the fuck they want.

Yeah, I would assume most people having trouble adapting are over 40. The younger people who are using IM at work, are probably just doing it on their own phones, or have inveigled IT into installing their own chosen social app on their work computer, though that's still open to having its own data captured in many cases.
