I think I was the victim of identity theft
« on: June 04, 2014, 05:04:56 PM »
Today I went in to complete some final paperwork for my internship this summer. I had to provide a primary identification document, in this case my passport. I signed some forms, and the HR lady scanned my passport, and I went on my way. 20 minutes later, when I was most of the way home, I got a call from her telling me that there had been a photo mismatch with my passport, and that I needed to come back in.

Apparently when E-Verify ran my passport number, DHS records returned a photo of an Asian woman. Surely my privileged cac male name evokes the thought of an Asian woman, but this was a red flag that they couldn't wave off. I had to turn around and come back to the office and sign a form contesting the identity verification failure, and tomorrow I have to call DHS and have god knows what kind of conversation with them to get this resolved.

I can think of a few ways this happened. I spent a lot of time in Asia, and in a lot of countries they'll make you give them your passport to get a hotel room, rent a motorcycle, or even use an internet cafe. Someone might have done something shady with it on one of these occasions.

This is some real horseshit.

Some unpleasant chap named Green Shinobi may have been the culprit.

Seems like some Kafkaesque nightmare, having to prove to some kind of bureaucracy that you're not an Asian lady.

I know very little about Kafka, decide to write this anyway.

Or Gogol.  I have fond memories of reading Gogol.  When I was in jail.

Oh Arvie, oh the stories I could tell.  And I would, for a shirtless pic.
