One of these sports is globalizing fast, the other isn't. It's a function of time.

Baseball has been global for 30 years bro. NFL won't let the NBA hit europe before they do. You can't beat the NFL, they are the only league that has absolute control over the players. NBA will price itself into hard times by 2020.

You are talking about now. But the concussion issue is going to fuck the sport. Kids are are playing soccer instead of football due to the dangers. As high schools have more parents who refuse to let their children play football, college and NFL will be affected. I'm not saying it's contracting NOW. I'm saying that the mentality that football is a barbaric sport as we come to understand the nature of brain injury is starting to take hold.

The NFL has no chance in europe. Europeans don't fuck with american football at all and never ever will. And it's too expensive to take off in developing countries.

NFL ratings are increasing in England, and the league has serious plans to expand a team there; this year the Detroit Lions (hell yea) are playing the Atlanta Falcons at Wembley Stadium.

I don't expect the NFL to make a huge dent in Europe, but they'll at least succeed at making the sport more popular there and making money. They're not the most successful sports league in the world for nothing. I'm going to assume they know what they're doing with this. Overall though I don't think the NFL will become as popular as soccer will ultimately become in the US due to demographic shifts.

What lol? That surge peaked awhile ago. It'll continue but similar to the highschool player surge, the league realized it was overhyped and moved on.

The real secret to the NFL success is college football. It's the star-maker and has a built-in fanbase that never goes away. It turns regional teams into national teams if they draft the right guy. The NFL just gets to cherry-pick the very best from that system and cash in on them, with a new crop of cheap talent coming along every year.

Also, football is the perfect sport for television. Lots of breaks in the action and every play capable of producing something visceral and incredible. It's always going to be the advertising darling.

http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/page/popwarner/pop-warner-youth-football-participation-drops-nfl-concussion-crisis-seen-causal-factor

(Image removed from quote.) the changes start small, from the bottom, with the kids, and then they go ALL the way up.

Kind of like how boxing coaches in the 60s noted changes in the amateur game, which became safer and more protracted after Ali's breakdown became more and more public.

Yea concussions should be the real discussion here. And NFL folks are still butthurt Pop Warner is starting to move away from tackling lmao. They don't get it...

That being said, high school football remains a powerhouse in the US. Truth be told Pop Warner tends to be a more suburban white thing, whereas middle school and HS is often more diverse. If we start seeing more HS programs shut down or decline then the league will really be in trouble.

IMO concussions real danger to the NFL is moreso liability related. The NFL settled a nearly $800mil lawsuit last year, and that precedent is going to lead to bigger settlements or even court losses. NFL teams split $6b in revenue last year and the league continues to grow BUT concussions are going to pose a threat. Especially once individual teams start getting targeted.

And last point: this Ray Rice shit doesn't help either. The league claims half its fans are female but I expect that to decline due to this shit.

31 of 32 NFL teams make a profit yearly, more than half are worth more than a billion dollars, and the NFL's revenue is obscene. 32 teams split $6b in revenue last year. Overall the entire league 2013 revenue was $10b, and they're aiming for $25b within a few years...

FIFA's 2013 revenue was $1.3b (US dollar). NBA was at nearly $5b last year.

Soccer sucks in America because we didn't have a proper academy system, and that's already being remedied. You can see the early fruits of that in guys like DeAndre Yedlin. The MLS is expanding, and intelligently. In the past couple years they've added franchises and have more on deck, TV deals for the sport also expanded in the last couple years. We've got more and more mexicans joining the country.

That one's also just a matter of time (Image removed from quote.) .

Here is an example of the NFL in america (for those whom aren't here)

The Cleveland Browns have been one of the worse teams in the NFL since their return. They have been to the playoffs once and their median record in probably something like 5-11 for the last 10 year. They have a 70,000+ seat stadium with 80.00 average seats and 10 dollar beer...crazy huh?  Well they have sold out every game since they have returned...every FUCKING game has 100,000 people downtown in Cleveland. As big as the Cav's are going to be this year and for the next few, this will always be a football town.

Other football towns: Dallas, Chicago, Denver, Seattle, San Fransisco, etc.......in fact outside of NYC and Miami (LOL) I can't think of one city were the NFL isn't the king dog by a 100 miles.
YMMV

This is the statement I'll stick by: Basketball will always have the biggest stars but the NFL will always be the king, baby.

Yup, although soccer certainly has a collection of globally popular players. But right now LeBron is the biggest athlete in the world.
No, Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo is. Get out of here.

You asked for most successful league, it's the nfl.  Every other league in the world would murder to figure out what they're doing right across the board (this is the most important thing, it's a full league).  Like Mandark said, the Buffalo fucking Bills are worth more money, and generate more profit than almost every team in European football.

Oh fuck yes. Lebron is way bigger name than those guys. Everybody in Europe knows Lebron, probably less than 15% of americans even know who these guys are.....maybe 25% because of the world cup.

It's still single-A ball compared the the rest of the world. Americans hate being #2 much less #66

Just a generalization. If Americans can't deal with being mediocre, then how come they come out in record #s for the World Cup?

Inside 15 years barring the MLS will probably be better than Serie A in terms of match quality and prospects, and will be exporting more and more players to the bigger 3 leagues. More money to spend, already have high youth participation, diverse talent pool, high quality sports science, shifting demographics. Just a matter of time, imo.

because america likes trendy.
