Also, Atlantis wasn't started in 96-97.  It was canceled/delayed due to Pokemon extending the GB's life.  The huge success of the GBC dropped the final nail in Atlantis, which was actually a different thing from what ended up launching as GBA.

I thought gba WAS Atlantis.

I didn't actually play the first until last year in 3DS VC, still holds up pretty well. Got 100% too. :jawalrus

I started with WL3 and 4, those games were fucking rad. :rock

Playing WL2 for the first time via 3DS VC right now.

Fuck Donkey

:leon

I remember in the early 2000's I felt like I was insane because I just KNEW I had played DKC2 (well, something like it) on my GameBoy but I could never find out any info about it (lost the cart and forgot the name.) :lol

Donkey Kong Land 1 served me through some boring times.  :american

Well I thought it was DKC1 because it had DK and Diddy, I knew it wasn't "exactly" DKC2 but I figured stuff gets lost in ports, or maybe it was DKC1. Didn't know.

I remember WL4 being awesome. Reeeaaaally fucking awesome and addictive.

This thing was apparently the Atlantis. That's a DSi next to it on the right.

Wow. And I thought the GBrick was big.

Oddly, it has the four XY/AB face buttons. :lol Would take nine years for those to actually hit a retail system (DS.)

Considering getting a white GBASP because I'm sick and tired of having to emulate FFV or VI when I've got them right here in their cases. Worried about gba piracy though but thankfully I've still got my faves: Mega man zero 2, ffv/vi, Metroid zero mission.

I'd have to rebuy stuff like aria of sorrow (let kid borrow it and he never gave it back) and stuff like Klonoa's, ninja five-o, astroboy ( sold when I needed cash back in college days).

guru logi champ it's a pretty novel puzzle game

bit generation sound voyager is another good one

you catch invisible dots, this sounds like a really stupid premise but the catch is that the dots emits sounds, so you have to understand their location by carefull listening from the direction of which the sounds come which make this game pretty much impossible to play without headsets, there are other mode too like one where you have to dodge invisible cars and another where you have to catch an invisible chicken

bit generation digi drive

this took me a while to understand but after you do it's a really nice game, basicaly cars come into this + intersection and you can redirect them to different section, when you park a certain amount of the same type of cars in a direction, they make a triangle, putting more cars evolve the triangle into a square, the square into a pentagon and so on into polygon with more corners (the best one is a circle obviously) now once in a while a flashing car will come and when you redirect the flashing car into a parked section it scores you point depending on what pentagon you had

but wait! there are different way to multiply the amount of car you park, the first is that if you make a polygon on every corner you enter a bonus mode where every car is worth a whole set, the second is that if you break a set (by sending a card of a different color) that set gets added to another different set, buuuuuuuuuut if you have 3 set instead, the set you broke get added to BOTH set effectively multplying that set by 2

Demi's list is pretty solid. Sword of Hope was DOPE, I remember having a huge hard-on for Kemco's Macventure ports back when I was a kid and those two games basically taking that engine and tacking on RPG elements onto it.

I don't hear this game being talked about much, but Great Greed was another RPG at the time that held my interest. Played it again a few years ago, weird as fuck game.

2.3x faster and 4x the RAM of a NES. I think people overlook this which is unfortunate. The GB has the rep of being a totally weak system but I think that's mainly due to the screen. It's most apparent in the music, GB chipmusic is much more pleasant to listen to than stock NES chipmusic (Shovel Knight wanted to be NES authentic but had to include the three additional channels of the  VRC6 Famicom add-on to sound close to good.)

Also, some nice watchin':

I think that's because of their relative competition.

The NES had 1983 technology in it, so it was "set in stone" basically six years before the GameBoy. The Master System and Atari 7800 both came too late and weren't too much better. By 1988 tech in the Genesis, it got roughed up.

The Game Gear came out like a year after the Game Boy, the Lynx came out the same year as the GameBoy. The TurboExpress wasn't too far behind.

The black and white thing did totally hurt it though. Game Gear seemed to blur almost as much in my memory. (And no, it wasn't because Sonic was faster than Mario.)

This version of Tetris is serviceable, but two things holding it back right off the bat are lack of shadows and lack of "up" to drop immediately.

I know holding blocks and generous post-drop movement freedom are contentious topics (I prefer them myself), but the above two things are necessary for an efficient game of Tetris IMO.

Anyone who says this is the best version of Tetris is koo koo bananas.

You press down to drop the block. Shadows are redundant because the pixels are gi-fucking-gantic and the screen tiny.

Down moves it down faster, but doesn't drop it immediately. Unless I'm missing something.

All the blocks are using the dark gray color, a light gray outline of the block could easily work. But it was before that mechanic was added to the series I think.

OG tetris or Tetris the Grandmaster are the only ways to play tetris if we are talking 1player tetris games.

In other news: Metroid 2 is a good game. Samus takes up, like, a 1/3 of the screen which is kinda ass, but the game is built around running thru and killing lots of Metroids which is a good concept and most of the metroids are real fun to fight against. Also the morph ball in 2 is the most funnest morph ball metroid ever had. I would recommend it to anyone (tasty meat) born too late and now looking at GB things.

The post-drop freedom stuff isn't really a bother to me. I go either way on it. Holding blocks are ace, though.

Lack of instant drop and drop shadows is just a bummer though.

There is an on-going fan remake project for Metroid 2. demo here: http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com.ar/p/am2r-demo-131.html

Not too hyped about it personally, these fan things tend to feel kinda slap-dash and bad to me, and this one isn't an exception.

I didn't realize how accustomed I had gotten to sleep mode on my SP/DS/3DS. Having to turn this sucker on and off so often is a bummer. It's basically a home console in the sense you have to dedicate a block of time to it and can't do much in quick bursts.

Listen, if I want to play Tetris on the go I don't want to start from square 1 every single time, especially since this version doesn't even have up-to-drop so the early game is slow as molasses.
