Yeah. We already got a bunch of handwringing and crocodile tears from Cameron out of it. Watch Scotland become a scandinavian style socialist utopia within a couple decades. :uguu

Best case scenario:

-Scotland leaves UK
-UK (England really, all thats left) leaves EU
-Banks leave the city and go to Dublin/Glasgow/Edinburgh

Why would you ever want to be part of a kingdom that conquered you?

You should know better Esch.

There is no point for them to be IN the UK longterm now that we have the EU.

They got oil, they speak English. They should be fine.

conquer? britain was a voluntary bail out for scotland after they shit the bed and went bankrupt trying their own colonial pants on.

as for kingdom - they still want to keep the queen. and the pound.

yeah, i agree. the sort of people in england who are all for leaving the EU are the same sort of people in scotland who want to leave the UK. the difference being UKIP voters are seen as the deluded little englanders they are while the scots are seen as a proud and noble warrior poet race.

save nationalism for football matches.

Nope, I don't have faith in petroeconomies for the long term future. Scotland has some other strong sectors but...

The EU will fall apart. It was a stupid idea from the beginning.

As for the last bit, I have no comment on English or Scottish invective. I simply think it's best for the UK to remain united, all parties included. Nationalism is nice and all but it'll continue to matter less and less with an increasingly globalized culture, imho.

I'm mostly anti-succession only because I'm generally anti-Nationalism, but one of the issues the Yes side raises is that Scotland isn't using it's petro-resources effectively. They don't have a sovereign fund like Norway, nor are focusing on reinvesting their petro money in alternative resources and industries.

The No camp is trying to scare folks, their lowest estimate is 15 billion barrels.

A barrel is around a 100 bucks.

There are less then 5 million people in Scotland.

that's the most bizarre part of this whole thing :lol

The Irish Free State had the UK's monarch as its head of state.

Given the complications of divorce, it doesn't seem imprudent to maintain the same head of state until you can fully republicanize.

They're probably just content with the parliamentary system as it stands with PM as head of gov't and Monarch as head of state - saves the fuss of trying to figure out what a Presidential role would be and what it would even look like. I think Canadians and Australians still keep it like that more out of complacency than any sort of deep devotion to the crown.

Not to demean Canada and Oz, but they are recent creations (I think both the Canada and Australia acts were signed in the 80s) and without the distinct institutions of Scotland that predate and were maintained subsequent to union.

Is there any reason why there were no exit polls on this thing?

The RBS of owned by the UK atm, that's another bit of a complication.

Sounds like No won, imo. Only 54% in Glasgow voted yes (allegedly).

Definitely the biggest criticism of the Yes campaign was the fact that they are really excited about the prospect of independence, but less so about the nuts and bolts, which are monstrously complex (currency, borders, eu status, trade treaties).  I fully expect the next time this rolls around (it looks to be no right now) they will choose a better mix of fiery nationalists and sober technocrats and be on their way.

Well, yes and no.

Even the 1982 Act didn't end our Constitutional hand-wringing.  See:  Meech Lake  Accords, Charlottetown Accords, any time any federal leader talks about Senate Reform, every Quebec election, etc.  etc.   etc.....

I like these kinds of charts, clicking on it and watching it reorder everything smoothly with animations. Part of my brain knows it's an inefficient data display method and the rest of it is going "oooooooooooooo click more random things ooooooooooo"

I think it was FOX's (or CNN's) that I broke in 2012 because I overloaded the allotted cache clicking on all the states and counties randomly and had to refresh the page.
