But really, 97MPH fastballs are rare IIRC. Mostly because that's a bit outside of most pro-pitchers pitching ability IIRC. Easy to blow your arm out if you do that "limit" constantly.

The camera was probably in his mask and he took it off as soon as the ball was hit in play. 

I'm not really talking about the speed of his actual pitches though, but the speed at which the pitcher recieves the ball and then starts his motion. Rman was right in his previous post, the pitchers are responsible for most of the space between pitches because even after they get their sign they'll just stand and take a breath or something before pitching.

well in light of the Tigers fuck up I feel confident in asking what I assume is a dumb baseball questions: are pitchers required to wait for a batter to get ready for the pitch? Is there an equalivent of a "hurry up/no huddle offense" where a pitcher just keeps throwing, and doesn't give the batter time to get ready - and would this be legal.

As long as time hasn't been called and the batter has both feet in the batters box the pitcher can go. There's really no way to control that, but when a pitcher starts throwing the very moment the batter steps in the box it's called quick pitching and some times people get pissed. I used to do that shit all the time back in my playing days because I really had no patience for all these dudes who would step out every single pitch. They try teaching batters to get ready faster in youth leagues but it's not emphasized nearly as much.

thats the problem with american sports the regular season is meaningless. you could win every game during the season but make one mistake in the post season and you're out :/

Baseball is a sport where an elite performer fails 70% of the time, and you generally need at least two people, each of whom succeed 25-30% of the time, to succeed in the same inning in order to score a run. So the very nature of the sport requires a rather large sample size to differentiate the great teams from the average teams, and then you throw the teams into a first to 3 wins playoff where your elite hitter can go 1 for 12 over 3 games, or your elite pitcher can give up 7 runs, and that's that.

There is no fucking way the Kansas City Royals were a better team than the Anaheim Angels (not giving them my city) this season, and yet they just eliminated them in three games.

That's why the playoffs are awesome.

Baseball is my favorite spectator sport, but I think it would be a mistake to go chasing after those television dollars. There are no changes that could be made that would help it compete with visceral sports like football or basketball.  It's always been a sport best enjoyed on radio. It's always been a regional sport too, only the Yankees have a strong nationwide following to speak of. 

They just need to make rules that get the game closer to 2hrs 30 minutes without screwing up the integrity of the game (and the stats, to a much lesser extent).
