I went into it with the mindset of not expecting old Twin Peaks, but 18 hours of new David Lynch material featuring Twin Peaks characters.  I can't say I'm disappointed.

More than anything I think we have to really hold back judgement until we see the entire thing. Lynch said himself he's treating it like an 18 hour movie and less like a tv show.

I think the main reason everyone is down on it is that

The first half of episode 3 is like Lynch trying to do a sequel to Eraserhead.  Seriously, you could replace Cooper with Henry without any even blinking an eye and it would feel like the same universe.   And the whole Vegas Dougie/Rainman Cooper character....  I don't know.  I'll just see where this goes I guess.  I'm a huge fan of this series and Lynch's films for the most part but I'm just not as down with this as I thought I'd be.

And honestly I surprised I don't get that excited to see the familiar characters from Twin Peaks.  It's more depressing than anything.  Everyone is just so old.  Feels bad, man.

Overall it feels less like Twin Peaks than it is a culmination of all of Lynch's previous films rolled up into an 18 part movie.

This isn't Twin Peaks so much as it's David Lynch masturbating. Which, for some, sounds like something they really wanted. And that's cool I guess, but I personally really needed the goofy soap opera stuff to contrast the heady surrealism.

Just finished ep4 uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  :doge

I thought the first two eps, besides being modern Lynch slow compared to the old show, were really great! Very well directed and interesting.

Then ep3&4 happened.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mentally damaged Cooper
[close]

Is the high school mentality Nadine subplot of S2. It's so bad and just drags on scene after scene after scene. It's like everyone waited all this time to get that COOPER magic back again, and instead we get

spoiler (click to show/hide)
[close]

and a totally shitty Michael Cera scene.

And then yeah, seeing everyone back and so OLD and lacking energy is incredibly depressing. That's gonna be us in 25 years fuck. 25 years doesn't sound like that much time, but the visual change for everyone is super depressing. And then you have the dead actors, and even more depressing is that Albert, who was awesome in the original and is nice to be back here, died making this new season  :'(

It also doesn't make a lot of sense either. Hawk's actor is only 66, dude is acting like he's in his 80s wtf. My Dad is like 68 and he isn't all slow geriatric. The mention above about the Ben & Jerry scene because depressing is spot on. There's no energy that the two had in the original. Again, not all of these actors are in their 80s or older. Some of these guys are in their 60s or early 70s and should not be coming across this old and slow. I gotta wonder if that's more Lynch than these actor's age. Either that or some of them haven't been acting in 20 years and don't remember how to act. idk.

Hoping it'll be good. Some of the parts are solid, and there's a ton of eps to go, but if they drag out this terrible subplot the entire season...yikes. Gonna be all Arrested Development S4/Fire Walks With Me in here.

Ok so I'm caught up to Episode 4 (going to watch 5 tonight).

I really loved the original season, thought season 2 was OK and it ended real strong. I LOVE the movie a lot.

Watching season 3. I'm really struggling here. It's fucking with my brain because going into this season I knew to brace myself. I knew that Lynch would purposefully subvert my expectations and he's really fucking good at doing that. I knew he would purposefully avoid giving me what I want. Yet here I am, knowing all of these. Yet I'm struggling to enjoy what's here because I know he's doling out the information and the fan-service in tiny tiny drops.

My two biggest problem with this season so far is the lack of music and the city-hoping nature. It's crazy to me that the scenes are dead silent. Where's the jazzy music? Where's the abrupt cuts to serious ambience? And regarding the locations, having it hop around the country makes it all feel so disjointed. Twin Peaks was so focused on that one town and it benefited.

I'm in the for the long haul but this is rough to watch and I KNOW it's supposed to be.

I'm glad you guys are tempering expectations somewhat. I'm on episode 19 of season 2, basically almost out of the woods of the bad stuff according to what I've read, and I really like the show. Even the bad parts were OK to have on in the background, there's still a good scene or too even in the really shitty episodes. I almost want to go back and rewatch the first season now that I know who the fuck everyone is and how they relate. :lol But I need to finish s2 and then the movie.

As a huge Lynch fan, I'm game for anything. Everything I saw before the new season (not much tbh) told me to prepare for something super depressing, and that's the mindset I'll be going into the new season with. Honestly most of Lynch's stuff is depressing to an almost nihilistic point, and his pièce de résistance of it (Mulholland Drive) is my favorite work from him and one of my favorite films. Some of the complaints here of "everyone's old and slow and it's making me sad 😞" are actually hyping me up for the new season more than anything hahaha.

TBH I wouldn't have put it past Lynch to just fucking kill Cooper in the first episode or two to fuck with y'all. Anyone expecting sappy Lindelof shit, the door's that way -> 🚪

AD s4 gets sooooo much better on rewatches. It's not as good as the first three, but it is really good.

The recut, in-chronological-order version Hurwitz supposedly made might even be as good as s3. Shame they haven't fucking released it yet. :/

Part 5 was my least favorite so far, tbh. Part 6 had a bit more progression with the best scene of the year.

Ike The Spike :lawd

I didn't like anything involving that Richard Horne kid. Part 6 kind of took me back to part 1, while interesting, a lot of exposition with no payoff, introducing more and more characters. It also was the lightest out of all recent episodes on quirky fun in the town of Twin Peaks.

I heard a theory that maybe Dougie was a highly functional autist and everyone around him thinks it's just one of his episodes.

Also, I'm a little disappointed that they never followed up with the murder mystery in Buckhorn from the first two episodes. They'll probably revisit it to tie up all the ends, but it feels like too many episodes have passed between for it to matter too much.

Episode 7 best episode since 3 :lawd

- Dougie-Coop taking out Ike the Spike (and otherwise barely being in the ep)
- Missing pages of Laura's diary conclusively found by Hawk, and Fire Walks With Me's biggest post-series clue finally comes full circle after a quarter-century
- Diane turns out to be a firebreathing badass
- Body found in episode 1 was Briggs', but 20-years too young :o
- Doc Hayward :'(
- Audrey's been in a coma since the bank explosion :-\

The general consensus of the morning seems to be: The atomic bomb created BOB because THE REAL MONSTER WAS MAN ALL ALONG! The alien/celestial overseers of our planet saw this and sent Laura to act as a balance to BOB. And then something something Black Lodge stuff, the end.

Does that mean the Giant is God, the Tower is Heaven, Laura is Jesus, the Black Lodge is Hell, the Woodsman is the Devil, and BOB is the antichrist? (just asking questions)

The way I understand it: the bomb didn't create BOB, but instead created a rift that allowed him to enter our world.  The inhabitants of the White Lodge put Laura in a dragon ball to help defeat BOB.

Let's be honest though.  The strangest thing about that episode is NIN performing at a small town dive.

Yeah it kinda smells like the prequels' emphasis on Anakin and Darth Vader cause he's what the fans knew.

Laura in the actual show was just as, if not more fucked up than the rest of the town. Space Jesus she is not.

If I have one really big criticism of Twin Peaks, and I have plenty, but this one bugs me and seemingly no one else, is how Laura-centric it is. The show establishes how Laura is this amazing person that everyone is in love with despite her many, many flaws and vices. But where Lynch and co. fail is making the audience fall in love with her, at least they have failed to convince me that she's a special person that I should admire. They made a whole prequel movie about her and it's done nothing to sway me. I read the Laura Palmer diary and it did illuminate her inner turmoil, but still. For me the show always worked better with Cooper as the main protagonist and Laura the phantom catalyst of the murder mystery and the mystical events that follow. But Lynch insists in shoehorning her as the centerpiece for everything. It is what it is.

I always thought the adoration for Laura by the characters in the show was borderline disturbing (all the more considering what you learn about the killer and all that...) and that there was some self awareness to it or that it played to the satire of soap operas / shows in general. But as you mention, the film apparently (I've seen quite a long way ago) tries to convince us that it's not just creepy projection but how it was (despite having some massive faults to her character).
