Alright, TP comment of the day (from AV Club):

"Something I didn't notice until after the episode: Mark Frost as the guy walking the dog in the woods."

Reply: "And until I saw the credits, I didn't know the dog was Lara Flynn Boyle"

Actually, it's really conspicuous Desmond hasn't been mentioned since he knew what "Blue Rose" cases were, implying he was on the task force with Cole, Cooper, and Jeffries. Chris Isaac must have pissed Lynch off Lara Flynn Boyle style.

Chris Isaac is usually reported as a really swell guy though. A stand-up fellow.

I read it completely opposite as that poster, that Gordon Cole woke Cooper up and he tried to travel through electricity to get back to him. Not that still basically distinguished mentally-challenged Dougie Coop suddenly could comprehend a 37 bullet point of why he actually hates Gordon.

The bullet points are reasons/clues from the show why the poster thinks Cole is evil. Some of the points are hard to argue against. For example, Cole does have the picture of the nuclear explosion hanging in his office. As well as paintings of corn.

Also, the poster specifically stated that when Cole's name was mentioned he regained more of a Cooper-like awareness and demeanor, and I agree with him.

I'm not saying I'm 100% sold on the theory, but there could be something to it.

Diane obviously prefers even evil Cooper to Cole (F... you, Gordon!).

Not to keep bringing up Secret History, but I'm pretty sure it also hints that Cole knows a lot more than he's let on in regard to supernatural stuff, I believe even predating the original Blue Rose case.

Is that why she keeps texting him?

You cherry picked the parts that are a stretch, but didn't address any parts that show Cole acting suspect. Yeah, the guy is looking at patterns, but a lot of these patterns are there for a purpose and many theories panned out before that were based on looking at patterns.

Speaking outside the fourth wall for a second, I'm also not sure Lynch would make his surrogate the bad guy in all this. If anything it would be Frost... WAIT, he was in the last episode! I'm just realizing how much evidence there is that he's the big bad of the series:

- Frost had a dog in the last episode, dogs are well known to be way shittier than cats.
- Frost didn't stop a guy from killing himself, that's like super terrible and stuff.
- He looked like a redneck. Rednecks are bad.
- He had no lines - what kind of sinister voice is he hiding??

Connect the dots people!!

Oh weird, the deputy director of the FBI isn't always 100% on the up and up? That never happens. :doge

Yes, Secret History does make it pretty obvious Gordon knows more/is more interested in occult/supernatural/alien stuff than the shows have shown, but at no point does it make him out to be a dude trying to send his agents into bad situations in hopes of...something?

There's one specific footnote where Tammy says she finds something he did disturbing. I believe it was in regard to his hand in the listening post.

Cole is the Big Bad. Book it.

Edit: Just looked it up. Without going into lengthy backstory, commenting on a conversation from the early 70s, TP is "troubled" (not disturbed) by Cole's involvement in past (though unspecified) UFO conspiracy stuff for the gov't.

It's pretty great, and if the past several eps are any indication, the finale should be pretty special. It's not perfect and certainly more geared toward Lynch fans in general than "traditional" TP fans. It requires a bit of patience, but it's ended up being very rewarding. If you're not a Lynch fan in general, I'd likely recommend avoiding.

Not all of the roadhouse scenes need to be a dream. Some can be real. Obviously the parts with james and Freddy were real since they are connected to other events in the show. It could also be a shared dream space. Many possibilities. Isn't it kind of odd for James (as cool as he always was) to get the same fanfare as NIN and Eddie Vedder?

Assuming the finale is satisfying, I want the series to be done.  I've seen plenty of shows that outstayed their welcome and become less enjoyable as a whole due to going on longer than they should have.

Season 4: The Mitchums are so impressed with the town of Twin Peaks that they name their newest casino after it. We focus on the weirdo regulars at the casino, and the brothers struggle to keep their hearts of gold while still being gangsters.

Yeah, I only disliked two episodes the entire season, I think. 6 and 12. And even upon rewatching those I liked them a lot more than I initially did. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the slower pacing (not a Lynch guy and I don't think he did the in the original TP), but by part 4 I was hooked!

So Judy = "Mother" who birthed BOB and tore those guys faces up in ep 2-3 or whatevs.

No confirmation on Sarah Palmer stuff but we'll assume she was the girl in the 50s flashback who ate the "bug."

Diane met Cooper after he did his time travel stuff in ep17 and they "crossed over"... into some kind of alternate reality where I assume Laura Palmer was never murdered. Diane became someone else, did Dale? Laura certainly became someone else.

"What year is it?"

That's the question!

Episode 17 can in many ways be viewed as the "true" ending to the series - BOB is defeated and Laura is rescued from her original gruesome death. Ep 18 is sort of a coda, some kind of alternate look at the world - perhaps it's the "real world" and Twin Peaks-verse was the "dream?"

"We are like the dreamer, who dreams and lives inside the dream."

Cooper was the only one to escape the "dream" into the real world.

The true question is, despite my fanboyism - did this need to be 18 episodes? It was originally 9 and to be honest, this story could have been 9.

The ironic thing is that all the stuff anchoring this to the original Twin Peaks - Shelly's niece plotline, Caleb Landry Jones plotline, Norma "expand the RR" plotline, Dr. Jacoby radio "plotline," James and Hulk hand plotline (mostly), Andy and Lucy "plotline"... it was complete fluff to the overall narrative.

Twin Peaks: The Return edited back into 9 episode might be even more compelling. I'm not sure. 45 minutes of Episode 8 can not be cut down - that HAS to exist as it is, as do many other plotlines. And in a year or two I might be shouting accolades for Lynch's 18-hour pièce de résistance. And ANY Lynch content is gold after a 10-year absence. But as hard as it is for me to say, for the story it was trying to tell, 9 episodes of The Return may have worked even better.

Still, the final ep is going to keep many a fan coming back. There's a lot to evaluate here now that we have the whole picture to work from. Judy/Mother and Laura/texas chick especially.

One last thing to note:

The "Lynch/Frost" production company clip at the end of the episode was silent. This was after Nue-Luara screamed and the lights went out in the final seconds. Electricity was always the Twin Peaks-verse boogieman, perhaps even more than BOB. I think this means electricity "ended" when Laura screamed.

Also I just realized neither episode 17 nor 18 contained ANY Audrey. Literally nothing. But why?

We knew she was in a coma since the season 2 finale - why show her at all if she had no progression? One more plotline to tie The Return to the original at the expense of the actual plotline being told.

Just finished it, gotta read theories, but on first viewing ep18 and the ending was terrible. Ep17 was good, but we waited all season to get real cooper back and he has half an ep at 16 and like 5 mins in ep17 and then he's gone again. Ep18 Cooper is not real cooper. He talks and acts like a mix of evil Cooper and red room out of it Cooper. Really disappointed all we got real Cooper with personality and a smile was for half of 16 and 5 mins of 17.

Ep 18 goes back to really slow and drawn out and boring and then non-ends it.

The entire ep17/18 I was waiting to go back to Audrey since you know ep16's ending reveal of Audrey waking up seemed like the start, not the end of her story part of S3. All of the side characters feel unfinished. What was the point of Jerry wandering around all those eps and seeing Evil Cooper and getting found naked? What was the point of Nadine's golden shovel besides her deciding she's fine with Ed leaving? Like did we really need all those scenes of the shovel just for that? What about the kids and the drug deal stuff that got all those scenes?

I was kinda giving Lynch the benefit of the doubt that nothing was "pointless" and that even stuff that seemed pointless would have a point in the end. But a lot of the subplots just seemed dropped.

Like it's well shot, and well directed, but feels unfinished. Like it needed another 5 episodes. Fan theories better make up for this.

We knew she was in a coma since the season 2 finale - why show her at all if she had no progression? One more plotline to tie The Return to the original at the expense of the actual plotline being told.

Huh? When did Audrey go into a coma in S2? I guess if that's the case than ep16's ending makes more sense. She wakes up. The end. I don't remember her going into a coma though and I only watched S2 a few months ago?

Just read some of the theories. Most are literally "We don't have much information, maybe S4? :lol"
Others are the cop out of all time cop outs for storytelling "IT WAS ALL A DREAM, ep18 is reality" THE END :|

I thought theories were supposed to find a way to make an ending satisfying.

Eh, I guess on the pro side the series did manage to resolve S2's cliffhanger with Cooper in the red room/evil cooper out and resolve BOB. Beyond that though, not sure what the point of the series was besides Lynch wankery and gorgeous framing.
