that sucks, reminds me of yesterday when my pops-in-law called me asking if we sent anything to their house that had to be signed for, as he just missed the dude after he left the note... said no... so he catches the UPS guy at the end of the long driveway (shared by 4 neighbors), but the guy won't give it to him without ID (nevermind the slip was put there all of 10 seconds ago lol). so he goes back to the house, gets ID, dude gives him the package, and he dropped it off at the wrong house  :lol

dude got all huffy after my dad called him out and just drove off  :lol :lol

I have a head cold and super sore joints.

And I had a ton of work I needed to get done today but of course that didn't happen...
Still sick with the addition of a rather sore throat.

I basically went this whole year without getting sick and *BAM* sick as a dog for about a week.

It looks like I'm on the path to change positions at my company.  It'll be a good change with more opportunity and I've been doing this same job for over 5 years now (been with the company almost 10).  But this position has given me the opportunity to travel a lot and with the new position that will pretty much be coming to an end I think.  Can't have it all I guess.

Also, it's year end.  Anyone else involved in financial reporting crap knows how much fun that is.

This is only going to make sense for about 5 people here but goddamnit....

F500 tire maker wants to add 10 wireless access points to a lab facility. Ok, got a heat map? Sweet.

Architect: We want to have gig connectivity through these points as we are BYOD company.

Ok no problem. Here are the Aruba's you should use.

Architect: Okay we want Cat5e cable

What? It's in a magnetic lab environment. You need shielded cable.

Architect: We don't want to play that much

Huh? Your waps are 10,000 dollars, the cable is going to run you about 500 dollars a box.

Architect: no...we like the 150 we pay for Cat5e

Did you READ your heat report on EMF?

Architect: Let me do that real quick...Oh

EXACTLY

I wish I charged by the hour.

Loads of stories, not sure which I can share but I'll do the ones that are out in the public due to the court hearing

- They were never able to close their books
- Towards the end of my stay there I would look at the accounts and know they did not have enough to cover payroll. Then on payday magically, money would appear from nowhere. I'd look in other accounts for a transfer or something but no, the money just appeared. This was the main reason I left, I figured eventually they'd get to the point where the money would no longer magically appear for payroll. Sure enough a few months after I left they bounced their entire payroll.
- In look through their CoA there were some account codes that I couldn't find anyone who knew what they were for, but they had regular activity
- I once came into work and was told not to touch my computer at all until 5pm. Because they had sold all our equipment to one of our child companies for the day and then they would sell them back to us at day's end. I guess not touching the computer was a legal technicality.
- We had a hosted solution that we paid more for than most F500s pay for their architecture. We had one of the biggest SANs of the time in the entire country though no one could tell me why we'd even need a SAN let alone such a huge one. Came to find out later the CEO owned substantial amounts of both the hosting company and the SAN company
- I lost like 40% of my 401k there. Because they ended up going bankrupt.
- we ended up going without a CFO, at all, because no CFO would sign off on the books. There was a person in charge but was the VP of IT.

Loads more and worse stuff but this is the stuff I can share.

I made an attempt to get back to US game development in 2012, landed a good gig at a reputable developer, and did well there. My wife’s dad got really sick, so we postponed (aborted) the move to the USA. During my time at the developer, the dev gave away nice pint glasses with etched logos and the year. After leaving it at my sister’s for 2 years, I managed to pack it up nicely and bring it back to Japan, a reminder of the last game dev job I had, and how much I enjoyed that team.

I had it here for two days before dropping it in the sink and shattering it.
