I read a shit ton of early-mid 90's X crap. What are some good graphic novels (cheap easy way to pick shit up) that AREN'T from that time period you dudes would recommend? I like reading self-contained arcs, more or less.

I don't know why you shouldn't. It get's better.

Personally I think All New X-men is pretty bad. It only gets somewhat decent after Battle of the Atom. What I mean is that I found it pretty slow and going in circles. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the original 5 nor was I of the premise of the book. Yet I was waiting for it to do something with it and I did'nt feel it did. It really did'nt do much with Iceman, Angel, or Beast. They kind of are just there which is a shame because regular Iceman and Angel are just kind of there. There's stuff to do with Cyclops and Jean, but most of the book has just been the same stuff. Cyclops is angsty and Jean has this terrible future and oh her powers are going places. It's been this stuff over and over and over with constant vague talk of how screwed the timeline is. It just wasn't interesting to me and then Battle of the Atom happened which has also anti-climatic. Hell on it's plotlines ended up going nowhere and being awkwardly resolved in another book.

I think around issue 17 is where it got more exciting.

But if you already like it I don't think it will get worse for you.

Thanks, if it gets even better I think I'll pick up the next volume. They're cheap so its no big deal.

I am not a big fan of his TV/Movie work, but Joss Whedon was responsible for one of the best runs in X-Men comic history. There was nothing special or unique about his run. He simply sat down and thought up a good plotline which he stuck to and didn't bog down with distinguished mentally-challenged subplots, he put a lot of thought into his action sequences, didn't do anything crazy with the characters and simply focused on what the X-Men is supposed to be: a team book. It sounds so simple yet it is something that the vast majority of X-Men writers completely fail to understand.

I wish he would get back to comics.

As much as I enjoyed a bunch of the MCU movies, the villains almost always suck. Yes, even Loki who's trash. Hopefully Ultron and Thanos end up done well. Since the villains they fucked up weren't ones I cared too much about(aside from Red Skull and The Abomination I guess).

It's funny, because by and large the MCU movies are ones I'd tend to say are "better," but the first couple Spiderman and X-Men movies definitely did a better job with villains than any of the MCU stuff. I fully expect them to fuck up Thanos, which sucks because he's one of my favorite villains of all time. (other being Apocalypse, and I have faith that Brian Singer will get him right)

I love TDKR right up until they kill Bane. On rewatches I just turn it off there. In my mind Batman bleeds out like the the whiny bitch he is and Gotham gets nuked.  The kids in the bus make it out though.

Also speaking of things that spiral out of control, I almost like TDKR the most right up until Bane takes over the city or I guess rather the part where he breaks Batman's back.

The heist is great, and better setup and directed than all of The Dark Knight's similar scenes. It's arguably got the best Batman debut in the films even with the dumb cops commentary.

There's a similar aspect to parts of the first half of The Dark Knight in which it's a crime/heist film that includes Batman before it gets too caught up its own ass chasing some greater meaning.

The Avengers was sorta better in the first half too, nobody knows how to end movies I guess. On the other hand, I'd rather pick up Man of Steel in the middle once Zod and his crew show up. Both those have redeemable action scene value simply due to the marvels of modern technology. The fake tracking shots in Avengers that move between all the characters in the battle are neato. (I also like the semi-one with Lois and Russell Crowe's Ghost Dad in the Kryptonian ship.)

Best scene in Alien: Resurrection: Ripley hitting the over the back shot and Ron Perlman breaking character because it was on the first take.

Quote from: Whedon
"But rather than go into all of the reasons why Alien: Resurrection is disappointing to me, I will tell you that, yes, I wrote five endings. The first one was in the forest with the flying threshing machine. The second one was in a futuristic junkyard. The third one was in a maternity ward. And the fourth one was in the desert."
Quote from: Whedon
"It wasn't a question of doing everything differently, although they changed the ending; it was mostly a matter of doing everything wrong. They said the lines...mostly...but they said them all wrong. And they cast it wrong. And they designed it wrong. And they scored it wrong. They did everything wrong that they could possibly do. There's actually a fascinating lesson in filmmaking, because everything that they did reflects back to the script or looks like something from the script, and people assume that, if I hated it, then they’d changed the script...but it wasn’t so much that they’d changed the script; it’s that they just executed it in such a ghastly fashion as to render it almost unwatchable."

I liked Winona Ryder in it.

people are trippin, alien resurrection has lots of good scenes.

i want to make sex with the scene where the hybrid alien gets gets sucked through the window  :phil

just as a fan of gore, that movie gets a thumbs up from me

also they turned the Giger knob back up from Alien 3, where his influence was damn near absent.

TDKR is my favorite of the three. I'm sorry that a comic book movie is like a comic book. It was great and one of my favorite superhero flicks along with the previous two.

...Except it didn't feel like a comic book movie? At least to me, it felt like it was trying to be social commentary (oh wait it was!) while just having Batman there.

Plus that stupid plot twist with Talia after Batman gave her the keys to the kingdom. It's like "really? Batman wouldn't have researched her ass to the point of knowing all the fissures in her large intestines before vouching her into holding the nuke? World's Greatest Detective, my ass."

A city taking over by a super villain and his militia needs to be stopped by a man in a batsuit flying an air plane and his sexy catsuit wearing side kick spewing one liners isn't comic booky?

Not really. Because it's been done by other non-"Comic Book" films in the past. Just not in that style. Hero has to save the damsel (in this case, the city) with a party/by himself #29034285029850298503248508430583409853408540398.

Quote
The bat symbol lit on fire when he arrives to wreck shit isn't exactly not comic book either.

Sure, but it also commentary on how Batman isn't really needed/"GOVERNMENT IS BROKEN."

Really though that plot twist soured me on Rises hard. Just so stupid. I mean if it was hinted at in the film, okay. But she doesn't even mention her father (from Begins) or anything until after Batman finally kills Bane. It's like "WTF?"

Kind of a lame excuse. It's a "comic book movie". As if all comic books are poorly written and riddled with holes.

It also dosent work with the Nolan movies which have set themselves up as a cut above. The tone is serious. They take themselves seriously. They try to operate on realism and real world logic as much as possible.

Which is why Rises is the most messy one. So many plot holes and leaps of logic.

Also Nolan sucks at directing and staging action scenes.
