Got to NO yesterday and it is absolutely beautiful. I've lived in multiple states in the south, and I never realized just how rich New Orleans' culture was. It's refreshing to have a city in the south whose history and culture moves beyond "WE HAD SLAVES". The beautiful architecture, even the swamps had a hint of grace not seen in Houston. It also has natural beauty. I could definitely live here.

Meeting my boyfriends family was both scary and exciting. I've really gotten off well with his mom and sister in particular. They accepted me, and while I realize it's partly/mostly because they don't know I'm trans, it's still a relief. Here in NO I don't know anyone, unlike in Houston. Unlike in Houston where everyone I know knows my trans status, I'm treated like a woman without pretense. I get a sample of that when I'm out at home and go to restaurants or the store, but not with people I fraternize with. Here they don't know I'm trans, don't think I'm trans, and won't know I'm trans, and it's really freeing. It gives me a sense of ease that's absent, and I can finally live as a woman without judgement from people I know. It gives me a lot of confidence I've done this transition thing right and that moving to LA or anywhere else really, is the right decision.

Today we went to brunch at IHOP, which was the whole family - only  9 people including me. This was a big thing even though it was a brunch because I had to impress my boyfriends family, especially his mom. Then we back home, and cooked. The ladies mostly cooked so I helped. Despite my misgivings they did nothing to not include me into every part of their Christmas. :heart

Christmas is almost over and I have never felt the emotions I feel towards my boyfriend right now. The way he has supported me and backed me, wanting me to meet the family that raised such an amazing person means a lot to me. I am definitely in love.

My uncle kept trying to sneak his 18-year son beer all night long. I finally pulled him aside and told him "I'd really appreciate it if you didn't give ____ beer. I know he's in college and is probably drinking regularly, but this is my house and I'd rather not be supplying a minor with alcohol." He was pretty caught off guard and said "Oh, he's not driving." I don't care. Just because I'm a huge beer nerd doesn't mean I support underage drinking.

You ruined Christmas for your adult cousin who can vote and die for your country, and you think this is something you should share with us?

Okay, Boogie.

Definitely. I'm the one who takes the fall for supplying a minor with alcohol if he gets caught or something. I'm not getting involved in that shit. If someone else wants to host and give minors booze that's great. Once you're a homeowner, father and/or a public employee you might think differently.

And he's far from being an adult. Dude was trying to tell my 85-year old grandma about specific cards in Cards Against Humanity, and then decided to shit all over "regular" kids in college who didn't go to his prestigious artisan high school.

Plus he got lots of beer before I found out and cut him off.

 ::)

And now we can return to good time sarcastic homoerotic Taco Bell sidehuggin' love.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!! I LOVE MOST OF YOU.

I agree with gundam. When I was 18 I was allowed to drink at family activities but it was like one glass of wine and nothing more. I never got drunk at family activities and I think it is in poor taste allowing a minor to do so even if age is a number here. Many researchers say underage drinking and weed smoking can lead to under development, so comparing it to signing up for war seems disengenous given we know th realities of war, but often treat alcohol like it ain't no thang. At a young age, he should not be prodded, especially from his father, that alcohol is completely okay without moderation. For an 18 year old, one beer is fine.

New Orleans is one of my most favorite cities I've been to so far, and I've been to some awesome places in other countries. It might be my favorite in the US. It is such a unique place, and people either love it or hate it.

His family sounds like good people, and he definitely sounds like a great person. I'm so happy for you. :heartbeat

Interesting Xmas today. A cousin of mine, who we have all been concerned about, has now been sober since thanksgiving. My extended family is not an easy group to  avoid drinking with, but he did it and I'm extremely proud of him. I'll expect big things from him in the future if he sticks with it. Hes also such a happier and more confident person now that he isn't living to drink.

We hosted my mom's side of the family last night at our house. My Dad and I got a bunch of growlers and are known as the "beer people" in the family. My garage is basically a beer cellar. Sheeeeiit.

Other than that, everyone had a great time.

My parents stayed here last night and are doing Christmas day with my wife, daughter and I. Eggs benedict and coffee this morning, gonna watch Fantastic Mr. Fox with the kiddo and then The Interview after she goes to bed. Lots of beer and etoufee for dinner tonight. :rock
this is actually p. responsible and a good thing you did

kid is underage and shouldn't getting three sheets to the wind with family just because adults are drinking

Holy shit you people are ridiculous
Dude is 18.

Gundam's house, Gundam's rules, but good lord he's setting shitty rules.

Plus... I mean fuck, I hope I never have to tell an 18 year old relative he can't have a beer because our drinking laws are distinguished mentally-challenged, but if I did have to prevent an 18 year old relative from having a beer because our drinking laws are distinguished mentally-challenged, I sure as shit wouldn't tell people about it.

Merry Christmas.

I wasn't really planning on buying gifts or doing much of anything, since my family doesn't really do Christmas outside of a small family dinner now. But I went to Barnes And Noble yesterday to buy Homeland S1 for my dad since he's into that stuff, and in the process I kept running into books that my uncle, who died earlier this year, loved. Dracula, The Club Dumas, Roman history shit, etc...it was such a surreal experience that I decided to buy a bunch of his favorite books and give them to my family. Basically all the shit we'd talk about at every family event, that no one else was really interested in. I gave Dracula to my mom, The Club Dumas to my dad, a James Bond book (Dr. No) to another uncle, etc. The feels...

outside of that, my mom made tacos and we watched Christmas movies.

Merry Christmas. Let's not have an actual debate about this.

you can let your 18 year old drink all they want at your own place.  sneaking them alcohol at someone else's place is fucked up because of legal liability shit for the host.

You did the right thing Gundam. And while that kid will probably think you're a stickler for the rest of his youth...who cares.

but man, the father is the real issue to me. If you say "these are the rules in my house, and they happen to be the rules in the state/country" he should respect that. jeez

My cousin was fine with it, and I think my Uncle was too. I just don't think he expected it out of me, since I'll gladly talk beer with anyone who asks. :lol

Never remember this being an issue at our family gatherings. I guess because most of my family aren't big drinkers.

My dad, uncles and male, often underage, cousins were too busy getting high after dinner to remember to booze it up. :mynicca

It's never been an issue at our gatherings. Ever. A big factor is that my Aunt and Uncle have always been super career focused and out of touch with the lives of their kids, and are now super eager to just be their buddies now that they've moved out and are in college.

Leave getting sloppy drunk on Christmas to the adults so they can forget their dreams and unrealistic expectations.  :brazilcry

Holy fuck, not only did one person agree with Gundam, but like four people did?

Wtf is wrong with this place?  :mindblown

I think you're having a hard time equating "my opinion of the legal drinking age" with "I don't want to be liable as a homeowner, relative, father to a young child, and government employee if an 18 year old drinks too much and does something stupid" because, you know, 18 year olds don't have a history of drinking too much and then doing something stupid or whatever.

Merry Xmas!

Oregon law basically says parents can give their children alcohol whenever they damn well please :pimp

Pretty sure it's the same in Washington too, so not illegal.

drove home and spent like 2 hours sitting awkwardly around people i barely see anymore. going back home kinda makes me feel bummed a little. not being around the people necessarily, but the actual fact that i'm back there where i left.
