to be fair he is not entirely wrong, some people will pay anything to live "in the city" only to complain about pricing

every country Ive lived has more affordable places if you commute

no one is forcing anyone to spend all their income on a shitty room in the heart of london or nyc

obviously Im coming from a point of view where rent prices are partially regulated

Color me unconvinced by how much the market is driven by what is mostly a captive audience in major cities, trying to access the most basic necessity. Consumers can't really stop living under a roof to sway the invisible hand. I mean most would gladly pay less, the only thing they're getting out of an high rent is a status symbol or most probably reassurances aboug the quality of the neighbourhood.

I must be tired but I read this like three times and I guess you are agreeing with me that stupid people pay too much to live in cool areas then complain?

I dont think living in an area which has street cred is a basic neccesity...and yeah this might be shocking but working at five guys probably wont pay for rent in an area the entire world wants to live :0

This is some kind of weird form of entitlement

I guess, but I don't agree with the gaf quote. I don't think tenants have much responsibility in this. The way it was said on gaf sounded a lot like some delusional or dishonest appeal to free market logic.
Sorry for any confusion, being tired I maybe wasn't clear in my wording.

Edit : Obviously i'm not speaking of living downtown, the basic need is shelter and my point is that tenants can't exactly just boycott it. When you're priced out of the market unless accepting some excessive commute despite both partners in a couple working, I think that's an issue.

Edit 02 : We're probably not having it that bad in Europe.

Kicking off in the CS:GO Lotto thread now. Valve stans trying to absolve Lord Gaben of responsibility when Valve are circumventing gambling laws with their loot crate systems while trying to shove it onto the two scumbags operating the "CSGO Lotto" or even defending them instead of doing the reasonable thing and asking what the fuck kind of company is promoting gambling for kids and letting 3rd parties take advantage of it.

Dennis doing the lords work tho' :preach

To be fair:

1) Valve doesn't make these third party sites
2) Third Parties are totally responsible for them
3) Valve's only "contribution" is allowing the API's to see the person that logs in via them's inventory.

Valve doesn't get a cut from these third parties. They only get a cut if the person is buying a key and/or crate from the game(s) they're "gambling" in. The actual items have no monetary value outside of the community. So, it's a bit more nuanced than this.
It is, but Valve should at least do what they were doing when the trade system first went up years ago with TF2.

 1) Actively crack down on tradebots and scare people by claiming your weapons could be permanently lost if found to be used for gambling, (which is even more scary given the fact that there are/have been skins out there ranging in the hundreds-~thousand.)

 2) Restrict API to sites that are doing illicit activity/ remove trading accessed in third-party sites altogether.

Which, like I said, I think was already in place when trading first came up. Either way, leaving a literal unrestricted gambling circle owned by Youtubers with 10+ million subscribers, most of which are kids, is going to look bad on Valve as "enabling". That and the fact that Valve directly profits from those entering that scene.

The points you made are definitely valid on Valve, including the fact that some of the skins came from free random drops, however I don't think there is enough nuance that Valve is totally abstained legally or morally.

One person's entitlement is another person's uphill both ways in the snow. It's hard to judge. But pricing a 240 square foot apartment in SF at 2250 a month... something is wrong.

The problem is that there are places where a middle class salary dooms you to a closet. I know quite a few people making 60-75k a year who lived with their parents until they were 30 (or got hitched) because they couldn't afford a mortgage, or even worse the taxes ($10k on a $400k house). And I don't live in a "cool" area (suburbia 1 hour outside of manhattan). The only reason people stay on LI is because they have their roots/family there (me), or really really really love the beach.

And no, if you're working as a cashier at a fast food joint, you won't be able to afford that 2 bedroom loft on the Upper East side... but you should at least be entitled to live in a safe area with decent housing conditions. Which is really difficult in the NYC metro area. "Get a better job" they say. But the NYC metro needs people to pick up the trash, to sweep the streets, to serve you your coffee.

"Get a better job" they say.

Which is bullshit because anyone with a job should be able to afford an apartment with no crime. There's a huge problem with a lot of "lower income" areas having crime and police doing nothing to help in that regard or any one "above means" helping.

Exactly why the above needs to happen. This whole "us versus them" in terms of classism doesn't help anyone. Even in rentals.

It seems the real problem is not pricing then, but lower priced area's being unsafe.

It's both. Lower income families are priced out of decent living areas. So these low-cost areas are built (and/or taken from previous middle-class areas) and they're shoved into those. Gangs form because kids have the feeling they won't ever be able to progress upwards and/or people feel like they're going no where. Crime starts to happen. Sexual Assaults and Robberies happen.

I know this because it's a tale as old as time, all you have to do is go look in those areas and/or work with them to see how these people feel. There was an article recently around here about one of the high-crime areas and the people that live there. They have no car, so they have to take a bus about 5 miles or so. Due to the bus route, they have to take like two or three busses for something that is literally north of them 5-10 miles to go grocery shopping.

You could say they could get a bike or something, but that could possibly be stolen. Plus a bike won't help with a weeks worth of groceries.

https://trevorcoultart.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/croozer.jpg

...You're being obtuse just for the sake of it. But let me go with you on this:

Do you know how many items a family of 3-4 (which most lower-class families will probably be) need in a weekly basis for 3 meals a day? You start to put cereal boxes, milk, apples/bananas/avacados and stuff into that little cart at the back of your bike and it starts to add up. Hell a months worth of groceries took up a flatbed truck for my family.

Those are good options if you're a 1-2 person family, but if you're needing to feed 3-4 or stock up, those aren't going to work. Double so if the area has a lack of sidewalks/bike lanes and the roads are getting bad. I had to pass by these areas daily to work at the job I started (since moved from that area) and it's readily apparent bikes would be a liability on that road, especially with those trailers/carts.

I mean you're in Europe, so Europe is significantly more bike-friendly and has more open bike-paths for bike riders, but in America those options are very slim/few. Most everyone either drives and/or walks over taking a bike.

We are a debt and service based economy.  If we paid rent at 1980 levels, adjusting for inflation, the economy will instantly collapse.  It's something that will need to be done eventually but nobody wants to touch.  So expect housing to get even more egregious.

It's pretty clear, and has been for awhile, that if you're on a mod's shitlist, you can be banned or even perma-banned for any post that someone translating through babelfish while drunk could argue as being bannable. Once you know you're on the shitlist, you can't make a single post that even a Martian immigrant nursing a hangover and PMS could construe as a TOS violation. It's pretty obvious when you're on the shitlist too. First you get a month-long ban for a fairly innocuous post with a really shitty explanation in the ban message, then a 3 month ban for something innocuous a little while later (they're setting up the "escalating bans" justification with this). my alt was told "one more sarcastic post and you're out."   basically marked for death because how the hell is anyone supposed to avoid that :lol
I could literally get banned for anything at that point.

I won't complain that much since it's their site and I was/am a dick for sure.  Just adding that the grudge theory is probably real.  it all started after the last wave of mods was approved and I started getting mysteriously banned with these longer messages that obviously enjoyed the process of banning me for things that everyone does in every thread (sarcasm, joking about other dumb posts.)  like "SO, you've decided to make YET ANOTHER sarcastic post, eh? You think you're funny?  you think this is a game?!  HAVE A LITTLE VACATION, WHERE YOU CAN PLAY ALL THE GAMES YOU WANT THEN"

well, not quite that cheesy, but that's sort of what they were like.  More verbose than the usual quick witty one liner about how horribly you failed.  Too bad I didn't save em.
