Catching up with yesterdays discussion, but lives are an outdated concept in gaming. With saves being in every game, there's literally no point. I remember in Mario 64, it'd save after every level, but it'd still have lives. It's like, what's the point? You get a Game Over, you just start the level again anyways and continue on your way. Lives only exist as something that gets in the way, and forces the game to take fucking forever to get back to the meat of the game if you're on a hard level, than actually serving a meaningful purpose. Is there any real differences between starting the level over because you die and starting the game over? No. Except one cuts the fat in an age where every game saves your file.

I think the concept of lives can work for a few gametypes that exist these days, but yah for the most part it's pointless. I mean, I get it, in the sense that I am aware of the History™ dutifully regurgitated by the offense seeking drones, but I've never seen a non emotional argument address anything beyond that very specific context.

I'm not sure anyone said lives were phased out. They still exist, and still have relevant use. The problem is most games that use them use them in an outdated model. The only time I find lives to be palpable is if the game has no auto save or checkpoints.

For example, MM9 uses lives, but it also doesn't auto-save. You have a choice to playing MM9 the old way and having a game over and starting over if you choose. This is how I play. Or, you could ignore lives and just save after stage. The crucial point is allowing the player to play their own play style. If you force saves on the player, but still have lives, lives are then pointless. But if you allow the player manage their own run, lives can be a competent use of challenge, like in the old days.

It entirely depends on its use, but ultimately most games that use lives use them in an outdated format that clashes with their games more new ideas.

I'm not deciding what people are allowed to get offended by, but instead judging them on their actions and how they react to that offense.
