Don't underestimate the power of competition though. In general I think Japanese people are also very serious about providing the services advertised proudly and without the apathy and laziness I have seen at every turn with telephone and cable services in the USA.

Moreover, the American government /did/ drop a heap of money on the telecom giants to lay new pipe, and ironically they did it just as they were busting them up in that historic monopoly breakup. When the government asked them to account for the money and how it was used to improve infrastructure, the new mini-Bells claimed it was basically lost during the transition into smaller companies.

While the mods make their games better, Bethesda should move onto an engine that doesn't suck or learn how to make games for consoles. Supplementing gameplay, mechanics, visuals, all that stuff is one thing. Releasing a game held together by spit and scotch tape is another.

I'm perfectly fine with dumping 100+ hours into vanilla Bethesda games. Those 100 hours being filled with dookie ass performance and bugs is the main problem.

Bioware for example, at least learned from their mistakes when it came to Mass Effect. Mass Effect 1 has PS1 levels of performance and really dodgy visuals. The scope of Mass Effect 2 was changed drastically, with more focus being put on other things besides how big areas can be and how you explore those areas.

Bethesda has never changed their own formula drastically. There's been no reason to from their perspective.
