I like GOTY lists that aren't based around what came out in the current year, gaming taste does change overtime.

?? What use would a GOTY list be if they weren't games released this year?

I guess it depends on how much you replay games versus playing new stuff or stuff you haven't played before. What I thought was my GOTY in 2004 can change at any time, especially if I replay games from that year constantly. Keeping all games in the same category helps keeps things in the same perspective.

True, but my point still stands about opinions changing on what games were the best in what year.

Yeah, but then I think having a Revised list of that year would be what you want.

Say you no longer think Halo 2 was better than Half Life 2 in 04. Having Half Life 2 appear on your 2015 list would'nt tell me that.

Remaking a a 2004 list would though.

Though if you see your GOTY list as this continuing thing then I guess your right. Still, i think that kind of defeats the point of the thing. Since it is just supposed to be a survey of the year.

There is always that feeling of how you feel at the moment and how you feel later about something. Honestly unless someone gave me a list, I would never remember what came out what year except the current one.

1. The Room Three (iOS) ; This excellent puzzle game surpasses its predecessors. The contraptions you run into are clever and ingenius, but never so challenging that you can't solve them.
2. Bloodborne (PS4) ; A fresh update to the "Souls" series. Removing shields and adding shotguns was enough to force me to take another approach to fighting.
3. Prison Architect (PC) ; Earning money while trying to prevent prisoners killing each other is no easy task.
4. Rocket League (PS4) ; Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars never clicked with me. I don't know they changed but this is awesome.
5. Technobabylon (PC) ; Another great adventure game from Wadjet Eye Games.
6. Broken Age (PS4) ; Double Fine finally made a great game.
7. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter (PS4) ; Incredible pretty and it would be okay even as a walking sim. The murder mystery story is a great addition.
8. Metal Gear Solid V (PS4) ; If I had more time it might have ended up higher up on the list. Now I'm stuck doing sidequests in an early chapter.
9. Warhammer 40,000: Deathwatch - Tyranid Invasion (iOS) ; Great tactical combat with one of my favorite skins. Shooting tyranids never gets old.
10. Out There: Ω Edition (iOS) ; A decent replacement for FTL. Perhaps a bit too random.

I didn’t have time to play Her Story, Life is Strange, Invisible Inc., or Massive Chalice, games that I can imagine might have made my top 10.

Good to hear about Room 3.  I liked 1, but haven't got far in 2 because I didn't care for expanding the puzzles to a wider area.  Just felt like every other puzzle adventure game at that point.  But I'll get back to it and play 2/3 sometime.  It takes me forever to get around to playing mobile stuff since I put them on super low priority.  Just started Monument Valley today finally and really liking it.

Nice!  Yeah I'm totally stoked to get Dirt during a sale.  Dirt 1 & 2 are some of my favorite racers.  3 was ok and skipped Showtime or Showdown or whatever because it looked dumb.  Rally is back to the rally racing I loved the series for (although I did like the city race tracks in 2/3).

If I ever had like a few years of my life with no work or social obligations like when I was 13 again, I'd totally run through all the Yakuza games I'm behind on.  Maybe I'll play Zero this year since it's sort of a spinoff and continuity isn't important.  I can't play the mainline series since I'm still back at 3 on that so I just play the samurai ones these days.

Realized I totally forgot Banner Saga Ep1.  Really liked that one.  Best non-jrpg srpgs I've played in ages and the story (Oregon trail Norse Mythology) and art/music is super appealing.  Can't wait for further episodes in this series.

I could look through Steam and do a stuff I played this year list.

Axiom Verge - It's Metroid but it's not. Lots of cool subversive power ups and shit. Lots of time spent not knowing exactly where to go when you have a lot of space open to you. Which I guess is what Metroid is/was. So yeah. A somewhat interesting story as well.
Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. This game ends the stupid 'are games art' debate with a yes. Anyone that thinks otherwise hasn't played this. Put it in front of them and strap them to a chair for a few hours and once they're done tell them they're going to shut the fuck up now, cause this game shuts those people the fuck up. Really cool control scheme where each duder is controlled by one of your analog sticks and they have varying actions which are performed  by their respective trigger buttons. This is on the level of Miyazaki/Team Ico type stuff, and I don't even particularly dig Team Ico's work, it's just the best obvious comparison I can think of. Seriously it's $1.49 on Steam right now. This is a work that I feel is worth evangelizing as much as Bully if not more. PLAY IT.
Double Dragon Neon - It's goofy hyper '80s Double Dragon at first blush, then it turns out it's goofy '80s and early '90s literally every side scroller beat 'em up at the same time! I've not even played an hour but it's amusing shit for aging shitlords like this forum's populace.
Dynasty Warriors 8 XL CE - It's Dynasty Warriors. We have a thread for this. You know what it is.
Garry's Mod - Some of my Squad like to play Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt during maints of our main jam. I don't do fps stuff much so i tend to be a total shit and die lots but this is fun times with bros anyway.
Goat Simulator - It's GOAT
Jigoku Kisetsukan - Sense of the Seasons - A 2hu style bullet hell dealy that is a bit challenging to see cause it's a cropped image on my already smallish craptop screen. A cool time for literally $0.
Long Live the Queen - A visual novel where you have to build various stats in order to survive which are affected by the type of mood your would be queen is. In the time I played  tried to keep her balanced and centered or in the 'positive' side of the various moods only to find that would make her learn certain skills very slowly or not at all! The first I've encountered such a mechanic. So there's more to this than just :uguu
Nekopara -

Phantasy Star Online 2 - Is coming to the US officially! But only in anime form. Some peeps that play(ed) this lots with me are possibly going to be hitting up Blade and Soul and possibly Black Desert Online so maybe this will get semi-abandoned in the new year or at least played a bit less. Have been putting an excessive amount of time into it during my quarter break. :-[
Rogue Legacy - I played this in January a bit apparently. Never finished but a good retro wander around aimlessly and build your dude up thing. I think I'd need to replay it with how I'm gonna do my tree planned out in order to do well and finish the damn thing.
Sakura Clicker - Do you want to click anime titties? Well then you want to play this. If you don't, then you don't.
Skullgirls - they took away a pantsu shot in an update ruined by SJWs 0/10. Nah this is another one of those games where I do not know wtf I am doing since the last time I was remotley into fightan games was the PSX days but it's fun to try and hang against buds.
Sanic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed - Gotta go fast. It's Mario Kart but on every console and PC! Which is great for people that dig them some karting but don't have the latest Ninty offering

...turns out I played more than I thought I did this year. Nothing super current though.
