A game called
Indie Pogo popped up on Steam today and I decided to check it out. Really glad I did...it's a blast!
I missed this game completely when it popped up on Kickstarter last year. It's a "party fighter" in the Smash vein, but does not try to be a 100% Smash clone and instead does its own thing. What sets this apart from other games is that it's very much a "platformer fighter." Not that Smash doesn't have those elements, but this one just feels like it more so.
You don't move around like other fighters. Instead, Indie Pogo, like the name suggests, is also about jumping...constantly. You auto jump to move and can jump at different heights, double jump, and use your up attack for a third 'jump' to get around. There are no normal attacks- instead everyone has one ground special and several different air-based special moves, plus a super move. You win by getting opponents' energy down to zero and taking away all their lives. Matches are up to 4P simultaneously and the game offers local and online multiplayer.
They went for a 16-bit look and the sprite art is pretty awesome. There's some pretty catchy BGMs here, too. Almost all the characters are taken from various indie games, as the name says, with 1-2 original characters(?). I'm pretty impressed how differently they all play considering how incredibly simplistic the control scheme is (one attack, double jump, dodge, and super buttons...that's it). Unsure how many characters are currently in the game at the moment since more are scheduled to be added and you have to unlock characters.
Definitely something worth checking out; it will run on virtually any PC and is like 100 MB total in size. Hope this catches on and also sees some console ports.
