Then I hooked up my Windows phone to my Windows laptop and Windows crashed. Never got it to work and threw out the phone.

I don't really care about apps but the lack of flagship phones over 3 years killed me. Then when the 950 and 950 XL came out I was really excited until it became apparent how half baked they were. I want a true surface phone and I'll jump back in because I hate my Nexus 6.

I actually think most people are like that. They only need a few apps, but Windows Phone's lack of apps scares them into thinking what if I ever need a particular app that's only available on iOS/Android. A competely reasonable concern. So they stay away from Windows Phone. Shame really.

If you ever get a smartphone, I think you'll get a better understanding of how apps can make a difference. Having immediate access to my local bus and trains timetables, for instance, is a huge time saver. Likewise for a direct one click access to your remote files (On Drive or Dropbox, etc...). Not a WP specialist, but as a former Blackberry user, I can attest that the inconvenience is real.

Wife has a windows phone and digs it. Mine was supposed to be that too when they were ordered but it turned out to be a droid. Hers is apparently more user friendly but mine has lots of dumb apps to piss away my life with.

I used a Lumia for a few weeks and it was nice. Had the core apps I use everyday. But ultimately not having just a couple apps will make a difference you have to get used to so I went back.

What Windows needs to do is put intel chips on their phones and have an OS that can run Windows programs and Android apps. There are already atom processors in Android tablets that are apparently very capable. I think anyone with a Windows PC for work would appreciate having a Windows OS that can still run all the apps they'd want.

I loved my Windows Phone at first. I did my research, made sure all the apps I gave a shit about were available, and got one a year and a half ago or so. Since then, I can't tell you how many companies pulled support for their WP apps. Every few weeks, I'd have to delete another app. I was pretty pissed when Bank of America's app was gone after I'd become dependent on it since like 2008 under iPhone and WP, but when they started pulling their own Windows/MSN apps, I couldn't help but laugh. It went downhill quick in the last 6 months.

Even if they come out with a great phone, I won't go back because of such crap app support. The apps that stayed available never got updates. By the end, I had to use 2 Facebook apps plus the browser to see everything (this app to see notifications, that app to post pics, and the browser to read my newsfeed - no fucking joke). I had 2 Instagram apps for the same reason - their app to post pics, and a 3rd party to actually see the feed. Waze worked half the time.

The phone itself was amazing, but the screen would crack constantly. The last time, I was holding the phone and it lightly brushed against my own leg. WTF? I just kept turning it into insurance, and I guess everybody else did too, because they stopped replacing the Lumia 1520 entirely. That last time I got an HTC One 8. It was pretty solid and took some rough abuse, but it was so slow and would crash constantly. Total crap compared to the Lumia in that regard.

So far so good with this Nexus 6. Not in love with it, but I don't hate it either. I keep it pretty clean, because I liked the simplicity of the WP, and it works pretty well for me. It rebooted itself tonight for the first time. It's working better than my husband's one+one (granted it is a lot newer though).

My Nexus 6 breaks with every update. Since the last update my phone will randomly turn off. I had to stop using it as my alarm because it would turn off in the middle of the night and I'd oversleep.

The update before that broke my WiFi. Every time I would come home or go anywhere with WiFi I'd have to restart before it would connect.

I fucking hate smartphones.

I gotta say, the only smartphone I've ever had that held up was an iPhone 3GS. I've had iPhones from before that model and after, the Lumia 1520, the HTC One, and now the Nexus. That 3GS was by far the most reliable phone I've ever had, and I just threw it to the curb because I had it for 3 years and wanted something new. WHY?

awwww I have a Moto X Pure which is very similar hardware wise but I haven't had any issues (yet). I've heard of N5/N6 phones doing that turning off in the middle of the night thing after a software update 6 months ago (before Android 6) so I dunno, maybe Google just sucks?

However, I did the Android update and I must have skipped a couple versions because I now get the impression it sucks battery like mad when it was very sober before (esp. not in active use, would use up 1 to 2% over the night).

The most infuriating thing with Android to me is tha absence of a built in file explorer / system management app. You have to rely on free apps that work fine but riddled with ads or messages to remind you of the paying version.

That's another thing. Every update fucks my battery usage. Some updates will make it so that my phone is consistently dead by 10am with no use. Others will fix it.

So a new thing I noticed this morning, every time I click on a link in Chrome it opens a new tab but the tab doesn't load. I have to refresh to actually get the page.

No, it's not you. I have a HTC M8 and it had some amazing battery life on HTC's original forked KitKat version and ran amazingly. Every version leap since has sucked shit in the battery department. I had to use Maps and it ate 10-15% of my battery for just 20 minutes of maps use never mind the insane amount of feature creep and weird shit google's packing in each update.

Android has serious problems in regards to delayed updates, or battery life in updates like mentioned. There's also rampant malware and other such issues that Google isn't really "actively" combating. I mean they "attempt" it, but the genie is a bit out of the bottle there.

It's kinda why they're bleeding users to iPhone, slowly but surely.

I loved my windows phone. Great UI, great camera on the Lumia.
But then:

1) No app support - kind of a huge dealbreaker
2) Mine was glitchy as hell after about a year and I had to do a factory reset and then after about 10 months it got really glitchy again. I feel like the Windows Phone OS may be more prone to bugs than iOS, but mine might've just been a one-off experience.

After my 2 year contract was up, got back on iphone for the two above reasons. It's a shame because that interface is awesome.

It's probably 15 years of Japanese attitudes influencing my decision, but I wouldn't put a Chinese product in my day-to-day critical path needs. I know my iPhone is made in China, but it's got levels of quality control and support around it which the average Chinese product does not.

I had a similar experience to Bebpo, loved my Lumia 920. The camera was some god tier stuff but I got sick if waiting for the apps to come. If there was any sort of app parity I'd go back in a heartbeat.

My brother and I buy our parents' phones for them and we got them Chinese phones (Oneplus One + Redmi Note2). They are ridiculously cheap for the specs they have and build quality seems good.

If you're looking at a Oneplus 2, you could also consider a Nexus 5x or a Moto X Style (2015) as they're in the same price range. The Moto X has a microsd slot but in general, Chinese phones have more hardware options and better specs for a lower price. Only big issues you might have are the software skin fitting your taste and the warranty/RMA process being more annoying than usual (or nonexistent).

I liked my windows phone a lot when I was on AT&T but they only have one WP on Virgin and it stinks, though it might be better than my current Android phone at this point. I also don't give a shit about apps so that helped. Just need a podcast app, tapatalk, bank app, and twitter.

Phone shit makes me feel distinguished mentally-challenged though. I can't ever tell which phone is better so I just end up sticking with my ancient one cause it works.

Yeah, I know that feel. My brain won't register for more than two weeks what films I look at (unless it's really good). Take that as automated BS filtering.

Otherwise, I would be interested in trying a WP if I get the chance, there's only a couple of really important apps I really need. Probably not gonna happen soon though... Also I don't know how convenient (or not) it is to migrate from Google services ? The contacts syncing with the internet directory is one of the most useful thing to happen to my mobile in the last years. I guess it's pretty standard now, but still...

I snooped around a bit and yeah the "app gap" is real as fuck. There's only two apps I would consider to be absolutely essential (as mentioned, those giving me time tables for public transports and suburbs trains) and well, guess what, one is missing from Windows Phone.

I know L'Empire Français is behind us, but our National Railway ain't exactly an obscure company. That they can't be bothered to port that stuff to WP speaks pretty loud about the lack of userbase or incentives...

Anyway, browsing the Android app store for all that introduced me to Microsoft One Note and Office Lens. The latter one especially is something I could have had a use for multiple times this year.

Taking the plunge on the new Lumia 650. Will get to experience how good (or bad) the sync is between this and the PC. The 950 had some sexy features but I am not certain they were really worth the crazy mark-up to use them (the 20M photos will be missed...), couldn't afford it now anyway. They are pushing it hard, the price with my carrier was decent (basically 72e total instead of 229 for a slighty increased price package).

Well, you can just run Android on your PC/Surface anyway through Virtualbox.

Man forgot how painful it was to set up Outlook and the like. Nice however to be able to link multiple outside adresses under your Outlook.com account. Calendar is more complete here than on Google.

Otherwise the app gap is super real, I can now say first hand. HSBC app is shittier than it is already, no Youtube official app, finding a podcast manager is surprisingly difficult, Tapatalk buggier, etc... I'll make do because apps are not essential to me, but the shop is terrible.

EDIT : No official Google Drive client too.

A Lumia 950 to be precise.

I haven't delved into the Continuum option yet or some of the most advanced stuff, but here's a few rough thoughts :

- Camera certainly wayyy better than the Xperia M2.
- Integration with Office and One Drive is much better than on Android, obviously. The whole syncing with a W10 computer is seamless, so that's good. Outlook being capable of retrieving mails from other mail providers is good too (don't know if Google or Apple offers the same now ?).
- I like W10M, It's pleasant to use and it performs well as a no-nonsense device. But I'm not a heavy video on mobile or exotic app user. Edge is OK I guess, but the browser is probably the default app I will try to ditch first in the future.
- Battery life is pretty meh, I'm a bit let down by that. I was expecting a closed system to be able to keep a low energy signature. Also the phone noticeably will heat when multitasking, major comfort issue. USB-C charges super fast, but that's a bit of a band-aid for a more serious issue.

To clarify, my Outlook mail adress has the ability to retrieve mail from all my other adresses, so all my mails appear under a single inbox. My former Android phone could of course manage several adresses, Gmail or otherwise, but under different inboxes.

Nah not the same, though it achieves the same stuff. As I recall I had issues with the all inbox displayed feature, though I don't remember the exact grievance. Guess i'm not describing properly ? Not to harp on this, it's neat but not game changing by any mean.
