Even Famicom Disk System support is popping up. That's awesome.

is this thing still sold out everywhere

Seems to be.

Off-topic but this is the best active thread to ask:

I want to buy a Wi-Fi plug for my SNES so I can turn it on by voice, but is cutting the power to a retro console while it's on harmful? (And ditto for plugging it back in with the power switch still in the "on" position.)

They figured out the memory issue - folders

https://github.com/ClusterM/hakchi2/releases/tag/2.11

You can now store like 500+ games on your NES Classic, pretty much every game you could ever want to play on it, with all the saving included

cutting the power off line that would be a great way to lose your saves

I'm over 400 games now thanks to doing some pretty deep dives on the NES library.

There's a ton of great hidden gems that work on the NES Classic. For those who want some more esoteric games aside from the usual fare I'll list 'em below:

Hidden Gems:
  • Battle City (Japan)
  • Cocoran (Japan)
  • Conquest of the Crystal Palace (USA)
  • Felix the Cat (USA)
  • Fuzzical Fighter (Japan)
  • Hammerin' Harry (Europe)
  • Holy Diver (Japan)
  • Kabuki: Quantum Fighter (USA)
  • Moon Crystal (Japan)
  • New Ghostbusters II (Europe)
  • Magical Doropie (Japan)
  • Panic Restaurant (USA)
  • Power Blade (USA)
  • S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (USA)
  • The Samurai Lord Musashi, The (Japan)
  • Shadow of the Ninja (USA)
  • Shatterhand (USA)
  • Splatter House: Wanpaku Graffiti (Japan)
  • Sweet Home (Japan)
  • Tetra Star (Japan)
  • Ufouria - The Saga (Europe)
  • Whomp 'Em (USA)

In other news it looks like hakchi is making good progress. Next update will have a massive overhaul to the folder and organizational file system courtesy of clusterm and it seems like madmonkey has been busy and has figured out how to add additional mappers to the emulator; his image update showed Return of the Joker working which means other FME-7 chip games like Mr. Gimmick will be working very soon.

You can actually do it right now, but this is a POC -- ideally you should be able to run the games like you do now, but they will directly load RetroArch instead of having to go through RetroArch's UI. I think you wont be able to use the save states though.

Can't wait to see how this turns out and gets improved.  If they find a way get ROMs to load directly from the NES Mini main menu...Holy.  Shit.

Looks like people are getting it running without much of a problem:

What they've done with the NES Classic in terms of cracking it open is really cool on a technical level but paying $60 for subpar Raspberry Pi 2 performance with 10x the setup/compatibility headache is a waste of time.

At least I can reroute NES emulation to RetroArch so I can get the last handful of incompatible games working so there's some benefit.

They just mean connecting something to the micro USB port in the back.  But you'd still have to get a splitter for power and it seems like a hassle when you could just play roms on whatever, yeah.

Got mine today, loaded it up with a bunch of roms, pretty sweet. For some reason FF3 crashes right as I try to start a new save, dunno if its the English patch or what but no biggie.

Playing TSB2k17 on it is pretty rad.

It's your patch; it converted the game to a MMC5 mapper which isn't supported by the NES Classic's built-in emulator.

It will run through RetroArch but to have it work with the built-in emulator you'll need this translation: http://www.romhacking.net/translations/141/.

Why is this thing still scarce? Ninty please, it's just a fucking rom box. ::)

Pretty easy to explain:
  • Earlier emulated consoles had lifetime sales of around 500,000; with very rare exceptions (Atari Flashback 2) did sales exceed half a million for these devices.
  • Nintendo anticipated similar numbers and didn't feel the need for hardware pre-orders since the NES Classic is a low-cost item aimed at a niche audience.
  • All existing global stock sold out immediately; that's over a million units sold in just one week versus the lifetime of half a million for all other similar devices.
  • Manufacturing ramp up for a custom PCB, processor order allocation, and product distribution takes months due to this is being a specialized low-cost device.
  • The NES Classic has been coming in stock pretty regularly with online and physical stores selling out in literal seconds and sales are estimated to be close to 2 million now.

TLDR; there are thirstier neckbeards than you and they're buying them up. The demand is far outpacing manufacturing ability.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I've been able to buy four of them with relatively no issue. I don't know why people have trouble buying these.
