1. The Departed might be a sorry award to Marty, but it was as a fun movie to watch. Of the movies in its category that year, it should have won. But Casino Royale should have been nominated and the winner, imo.

So how do begin to counter this trend? A Ted Talk seminar, or something along the lines of what happened at last year's E3. where you had speakers wearing rainbow lapels in solidarity to the victims at the Pulse nightclub? How do those who want to stem this tide go about exacting that "have you no decency moment" that will shock the collective population into taking more notice?

I paid little to Gamergate and the blowout that followed until I began reading about it here on this and other threads. It's par for the course that people can be assholes in multiplay, but how does one realistically address the issue wholesale without alienating the a great chunk of their demographic?

Watching enthusiastic E3 crowds now takes on a whole new dimension in retrospect.

Developers should have spoken out in blunt and strong fashion even if it meant risking profits, Game media should have done the same, it was all conjecture, bullshit, sexism and harassment and should have been treated as such from day fucking one.

From last week :

I stopped using GAF on my phone because of redirecting (and shady) ads that made it literally impossible to browse the site.

Those ads I noted a few posts earlier now close my keyboard close the moment I start typing, making filling out that response form impossible.

Im getting App Store redirects at least once per visit. It's fucking absurd.

Was gone for a few days, now back with some spinning wheel ad that vibrates the phone like crazy.

Another week and no public response. Nice.

Maybe we can make it a month! I'm so excited!

 

Alright, good to know that mobile garbage is seemingly normal. I get automatic redirects to the App Store all the time, at least 4 times today so far.

FFS, I just got multiple 'you've won a prize' redirects.

I'm going to note right up front that I'm not really a Bill Maher fan in the least and have next to no desire to go to bat for him. Having said that, I think this particular line has me simultaneously scratching my head a little bit and also sort of feeling like we're losing the narrative.

One thing I want to note about Milo is that I kind of reject the narrative that he crossed a line with those specific comments about pedophilia. Really, if anything I find the story of his demise just kind of funny in that I think it really cuts off the legs of the people who were defending him this whole time because they thought it was funny that he was poking the liberal hive. I mean, I can't speak for every single person on the left, but my own position is one of not necessarily thinking that we need to forcefully prevent him from having a platform in as much as I just simply think he doesn't deserve a platform. This isn't me clutching my pearls and saying "he offends me, somebody shut him up!" This is me simply dismissing his opinions as vile trash and wishing he didn't have a megaphone to amplify them.

So it was honestly kind of funny to me watching this go down. Seeing some conservatives slowly having to face the reality that's been in front of them this whole time. That this isn't some black and white battle where you have to embrace that free speech must absolutely be defended in every instance lest you give up on the ideal completely. That there actually are standards of decency that should be respected. It's way less important to me that we explicitly define where the lines in the sand exist than that we simply recognize that there are lines in the sand. CPAC and Simon & Schuster just had to acknowledge that fact with Milo. That was the story to me.

The specifics of what sunk Milo are way less interesting to me.
