You know how people warn the left against glorifying punching fascists? It's because you have zero come back when things like this happen to one of our own.

This seems like a pretty dumb comparison for several reasons.

First, you might find that the two people are entirely separate groups and so it's possible the answer is "nobody".

Second, you might find that people who argued "Spencer deserved it" might feel differently here because "desert" is different here. Like, someone's not a hypocrite if they were for the War in Afghanistan and against invading Canada tomorrow, they're judging both by the same standard and coming to different conclusions. I'm for arresting violent criminals but not for arresting babies. I'm for cow meat being legal to eat but against human meat being legal to eat.

Third, you might find that people hold public officials to different stands than random people (so it could be the case that the "victim" "deserved" it in both cases, but that whether or not we think the "perp" should be punished could differ)

Fourth, it's not clear if you think the problem is that people shouldn't punch Nazis (so it's weird that you decided to bring it up now because this is totally unrelated) and you want people to say "Wow, I used to be for punching Nazis, but now this reporter got punched and now I'm against punching Nazis" or if the problem is that people should punch reporters -- in which case make the argument. Hypocrisy is almost never a useful thing to allege because you need to make clear what you want to happen to identify who is in the wrong.

Let me lay out my position:
- I think beating people up is generally bad
- I think it is sometimes but rarely necessary, especially to stop worse harm
- How bad it is when you beat someone up and it's not necessary depends on who they are and what they do
- There is a rank order of people in the world where, like, baby koalas are innocent, and, like, Ultra Spacelord Time Hitler is like really bad, and the rest of us fall in the middle. And the closer someone is to Ultra Spacelord Time Hitler probably the less bad that it is if someone punches them. I think this guy is a less bad person than Duke University's most famous alumni, Richard Spencer.
- I didn't "support" punching Richard Spencer, but I also would not rate it as one of the top ten injustices of all time, and I think it probably wasn't one of the top ten thousand most significant physical assaults that occurred in the United States that day.
- I think public officials should be held to a higher standard than random people of the street, because they choose to be public officials and so we have a better expectation of them keeping their temper together.
- I think it is bad that this guy punched a journalist
- I think it's even worse that he immediately lied about it to avoid accountability
- I also don't think this is one of the most important injustices of our lifetime and I'm OK if this results in a nolo contendere plea and some community service. Although the guy should probably not be a congressman.
