The fact of the matter is, optics are important, moreso now than ever.

Not more important than being on the right side of history or choosing the right hill to die on imo.

Lets be honest, if she is dumb enough to post racial slurs on her Snapchat she is too dumb to be a cop.

Maybe it wasn't meant as a slur, given that she used the "nicca" spelling, but it is still an obviously idiotic thing to post when you want to be a police officer.

To be honest, the fact that everybody wants everything for free is a real issue. People don't want to pay for music, they don't want to pay for movies, TV, they want journalists to to work for free, they want photographers for free cause their aunt has her own photo company (Suzy's Professional Photography, check her out on Facebook), graphic artists should give away their work for exposure, "hey Bill, since you work in IT, can you come check to see why my 2006 Toshiba Satellite is slow," etc.

But on the other hand, it's a web forum with a overzealous ban policy and no accountability. If you want people to feel bad about the ship sinking, you can't have spent years delighting in throwing people off it.

Evilore waxing lyrical.

Quote
Where would you even start?

- don't use shitty ad networks that pretty much force people to use adblock

- get rid of the "moderation" team that is just out to stroke their egos and/or nuke everyone who doesn't agree with a particular set of beliefs and ideas, and get people who actually moderate. Using a bot to close threads randomly and dish out perms while a particular subset of users is absolutely immune despite repeatedly behaving in a way that would be a perm on sight for anyone else is not moderation.

- don't get rid of people who made what your site is. Remember, you only set up a shitty board and occasionally paid for more server space. Members made what your forum is. Which is why it's now dying.

It's not that fucking hard.

It's very hard when you hand wave any criticism as some sort of secret alt-right undermining effort. Just posting here means several of the mods think we're all really neocons just clever enough to not outright say we're racist/sexist etc. That's not even a conspiracy theory. They've actually posted that we're just all bitter cause we got banned, we got banned because we're bad people and therefore anything said is null and void. It's an interesting loop.

This is less entitlement and more that Americans have much less disposable income than 50 years ago.  I mean...

I've been hit with the annoying "hey could you design me a logo/invitation/sign on the cheap"question A LOT but I understand where people are coming from.

That's a copout. People just have the ability to get shit free, so they do. It's simple as that. If we were talking, you know, food or shelter, I'd entertain the idea that it's about how real it is right not. It's not. Nothing entitles us to free entertainment or free services that other people provide. I'm not denigrating the struggle, but the struggle isn't trying to decide whether to keep HBO Go or Amazon Prime. It's just super easy to get that shit for free/cheap, so we do. I'm in the mix.

I get mad when Netflix doesn't have exactly what I want, nevermind the fact I pay 10 bucks a month to watch whatever they have, anytime I want, wherever I want. Amazon Prime is basically kept me from having to buy music for a minute now. But I still get all pissy when Hot Album X isn't up right away and shit.

Less disposable income then 50 years ago? As if these 20 somethings remember that shit.

Wanting shit for free, or as cheap as possible is a race to the bottom and were all losers. One of the things I like about Denmark is that people are willing to pay money to have shit done. This also includes high taxes, but you do get what you pay for with a great system.

The Digital Foundry threads for the PSVR and PS4Pro are going to be a fucking bloodbath. Especially if DF has a good budget PC set up ready to go since the Nvidia GTX 1050Ti is launching soon and the Pro essentially has a downclocked version of the AMD RX 470 as its GPU. That i3 should be good enough too.

Also turns out Sony paid off Capcom and Warner to keep VR games off PC for a number of months. Suddenly that outrage over Oculus doing exclusives has suddenly evaporated and Sony doing it is a "GAF Good Thing™". Who knew?

Well Sony wants that enthusiast PC dollar, if you want to play games first, you gotta do it on PlayStation/consoles is the message.

If Rockstar does some VR game/mode and it will be PSVR exclusive that would make people lose their mind, and even if its not exclusive you know it will be on consoles 2 years earlier.

It was so awful. You played as a woman in skin tight lycra. Your dance moves made you shoot lasers out of your hands at enemy robots.

Gameplay was terrible. It was basically a game made so you could look at the main character's ass the entire time. I think it had an unlock costume that basically made her wear nothing, IIRC.

To gaffers who are piling up  on posters joking that the Kadarshian Heist could be a fake publicity stunt..

They might want to lookup an incident from a couple of tears ago when their mom tweeted a cell phone video of herself chasing "a stalker" in the middle of the night on their own property. She was chasing him while screaming to call the cops and bla bla.

It turned out to be a stunt for the next season of the show. I can't provide links because i'm on mobile but i'll update when i get home

This time, it's not a stunt, but it's easy to understand why someone would think it is

[Destructoid] Article on Safe Spaces Completely Misses the Point

Quote from: OniBarubary;218826956
So Jonathan Holmes of Destructoid wrote an article asking their community if they should make Destructoid a "safe space" and in writing the article completely misunderstands what a safe space is and what they shelter people from. Some of the shit in this article is just...ow. And I'm super disappointed as someone who generally visits there a ton.

Have a read for yourself here: https://www.destructoid.com/do-you-want-gaming-and-related-media-to-be-your-safe-space--390607.phtml

Here's where I kinda started bleeding out my eyes from the sheer irony of his statement:

Quote from: Jonathan Holmes
The ever-increasing demand for trigger warnings, spoilers warnings, and various other forms of content warnings. The attempt to publicly humiliate and stifle people based on their tastes or opinions. Using various labels, and the counter-labels used to try to humiliate and stifle those who are suspected of trying to humiliate and stifle others. The organized "raids" on online personalities and pundits who have "wrong opinions" in order to try to intimidate and exhaust them to the point where they stop talking. The list goes on

Sadly, gamer culture has been prey to all of these wholly undemocratic and unfriendly practices. Seeing as how AAA game marketing has worked to shape gamer culture into a petty, excluding, turf-war obsessed, "Bad Boy's Club" for more than 20 years, I don't blame a lot of younger gamers for falling prey to this nonsense. Still, I have faith in you, dear reader, and your capacity to self reflect. So tell me, do you want Destructoid to become a "safe space", where you do not have to run the risk of feeling challenged, criticized, or potentially made to feel less than perfect?

Just...ugh. Holy shit. He is directly attributing the toxicity and garbage in the gaming community at large to people who call out bullshit and get offended by racism or sexism and not the people who send death threats to women or tell you to "KEEP YOUR POLITICS OUT OF GAMING" and start whining about SJWs and PC culture when someone says maybe Titty McRapefest 2016 is kinda misogynistic.

Writing an article on Haydee and how the character has a fat ass isn't challenging. Writing an article about problematic interpretations of black stereotypes are in a white medium is fucking challenging. Writing articles about the poor portrayal and depiction of body types in video games is criticism. Writing an article about how R. Mika's butt intro getting censored is sad ISN'T FUCKING CHALLENGING OR CRITICAL.

No one, NO ONE, is asking to not be challenged, criticized or...ugh "potentially made to feel less than perfect" (Jesus Christ that statement is horrifying); people are asking that you be a decent human being and not a total shitbag and that if you really can't restrain yourself from saying something that is neither criticism nor challenging but is just a fucking shitty thing to say then a safe space makes sure you have to actually put thought into what you're saying and NOT do those dumb fuckboy things.

This is incredibly disappointing from a person whose articles (and site) I enjoy.

I think we're discussing different things. When someone asks if I could whip up some wedding invites for a friend and do it for free like it's no big deal, it's fucking annoying.  But I also get why they're asking.  Most people who aren't in that field don't understand quite value the work involved and are also trying to doing things on a shoestring budget.  I don't take it personally or assume they're entitled.

Someone torrenting all their entertainment or people who haven't paid for an album in 10 years...I think that's a little different and I'd agree with you a lot more from that angle.

Those threads aren't "safe spaces", the entirely of GAF is.
Quote from: Coffee Dog;218830148
Uh, no. Go into any thread about race/gender/politics and you'll find a lot of ignorant people with incorrect and harmful opinions.

Safe spaces are spaces free from ignorant majorities. That is their function.
Quote from: Enter The 36 Chambers;218831027
See this is the shit that makes me not want to even engage and try and learn whats being discussed.

Incorrect opinions? What?
Quote from: Lowmelody;218831945
This is some remedial bullshit right here.

Done with anyone tilting against "outrage culture", SJWs, political correctness or safe places. It will never be anything more than a desire to say or hear hateful shit about a minority without consequence.
