Disclosure: I got Facebook PMs from Chris' daughter, Sophia years ago, maybe after he got his first diagnosis, because me and a friend had years earlier made a stupid group page that consisted solely of Hitchens giving Maher's audience the finger and telling them "fuck you." She mentioned something about how it was probably the only fan page on facebook he'd like since all the rest were full of your standard athiest diatribes/arguments and such. I took us out of the group so it'd default to her choosing since we hadn't changed it since first putting it up. She had been using it to answer people's questions about him for a period. The other creator (aka my friend) said he saw it was being active but had ignored it assuming it was still like the second most popular Hitchens group (which it was pre-Facebook going outside universities) until he checked why and told me. And then I saw I'd gotten PMs from her. :lol

It doesn't seem to exist anymore from what I can tell. Or it's been turned into one of these other standard fan groups. Or Facebook purged it.

Okay, so it's not a real disclosure but an excuse to humblebrag about my one near proxy interaction with Hitch.

There are moderate Muslims but when most members of a religion believe it's ok to murder someone who leaves the faith, or a noteworthy portion believe gay people should be put to death, or most believe in various draconian oppression tactics aimed at women, etc etc...something is wrong. I'm sure it's a beautiful religion at its core, but unfortunately a whole lot of people believe in a very ugly form of it.

And let's not forget the genesis of a lot of this shit was British and US colonialism destabilizing regions of the world and helping to turn people towards dangerous religious offshoots. And what is the genesis of British/US colonialism? Manifest Destiny and other Christian views that the white man is endowed by God to be the master of earth, and murdering black/brown/etc people by the thousands is no sin.

In short, Abrahamic religion

Wraith none of what you posted supports accusations or racism nor does it even support the claim they believe there's no moderate Muslim. You realize Sam Harris works with Majiid Nawaz, a moderate Muslim who he supports in his effort to reform the religion?

He isn't excusing any bad behavior from any other religion. He states that Islam is different because of its intent to statehood, an idea other jeudochristian religions are largely past. Augustine was the fucking fifth century. Islam was a war religion in time of its own prophet.

There is a reason Westboro Baptist Church is seen widely by its own country and surrounding culture as nut jobs while backwards doctrine is law in Islamic state countries because there is a call for there to be an Islamic state.

Fear of a reborn worldwide Caliphate or Sharia Law becoming dominant law in Western nations isn't exactly a fear of converted cacs hopping on the radical Islam train.

That's one of the things that often gets me about the experts there. They don't know how much they don't know.

The funny thing is that Newt has long been well regarded as a military historian for an amateur*. Especially on the Civil War. (Even though his books are alternate history fiction, he and his co-author (an actual history professor) researched the historical events first.) Even his conclusions, like the one in those tweets, can be fitting into his political arguments/worldview, it's not like he's wrong on the details. Japan did pull off a nearly perfectly brilliant attack. (Especially considering their status as a military power under 50 years prior.)

Also, Newt reviews books on Amazon, and he's written favorable ones about understanding bin Laden, although not on 9/11 itself, so...

It also appears that he wrote a series on the Pacific War with the first book focused on Pearl Harbor.

*He's actually not entirely, he has a PhD in history, but after being denied tenure ran for Congress and left academia.

Ah, I didn't see there was a whole thread of this... "What is this I don't even. Wow. I refuse to believe it's real."
WTF at people comparing Pearl Harbour (and the several assorted attacks) to 9/11. Not the same scale at all and very different events.
Are all those outraged gaffers suggesting we should speak of the traitorous japs instead of recognizing their successes in a 75 years old military attack ?

Quote
What argument is there that the surprise attacks were "brilliant"?

Well... you know. Having a massive task force crossing half the Pacific and achieving surprise while simultaneous amphibious assaults were performed on the same day in Asia ?

What argument is there that the surprise attacks were "brilliant"? Setting aside moral outrage, the U.S. still had a badass Navy after Pearl Harbor. If their objective was to cripple the U.S. fleet, they failed. And they lost.
lol, it was fucking luck that it didn't work, because it forced the U.S. to actually invent the new modern form of Naval Warfare (and the JAPS didn't know we had already planned on giving up the Philippines early in any war) and all the damaged battleships were barely even used in the war once repaired because we had found a better method

the US took nearly 4000 casualties, lost nearly the entire fleet, while the JAPS lost 65 people total in a direct assault on the world's largest naval fleet, they didn't even lose a hundred planes in the attack! if the aircraft carriers hadn't been moved it would have been more than a year to even catch back up to Japan's weaker navy, especially since we had to support the War on the other side of the world too

the lesson Japan probably took away in the immediate aftermath and to Midway was that it shouldn't have held back and pressed the advantage which they never did to attack all the facilities along with the ships

the scope and scale hadn't been part of the American planning, much smaller was assumed, maybe just the Philippines or so

90% of the muslims I know are christian youths of 30 - 40 years ago, they drink, they party, they fuck but put on the fake good child act when their parents religious leaders/friends are around to not shame their folks. Most cant give a fuck but for their folks social standing.

There are some completely fucked up madrassahs around here though,I feel it's people from that sphere that drives that shame based fake conformity in the local muslim community.

It's mostly a memoir/love-letter to his mother, from what I've been hearing. His time during apartheid being the background for most of it.

I appreciate the struggles he's gone through but the way he handles the topic of racism always feels lacks tenuity. Although I did like his interview with that crazy Nazi chick. I think you misunderstand his intent with the paper thing. The episode focused on fake news and he suggested being more invested post-election in educating ones self through various sources, including WaPo and NYT. It's not exactly a bad sentiment to have especially due to a sizable percent of the population getting their news exclusively from Facebook. Basically, it was more of an appeal to make people more actively engaged in their news media consumption than pre-election.

His call-to-arms for people to mass subscribe to "struggling" national papers like WaPo and NYT was also enough for me to completely write him off.

He's kinda right on that, though. Look at how "Fake News" is spreading. A bunch of the old-Journalism papers have to cram a bunch of ads and things into their "free" mode (that people block) to pay the reporters and to give access to people to read their content. Something has to be done on supporting that industry.

I mean let me put it this way:

Basically, in an era where news can be found for free, people aren't paying for legitimate news sources. By subbing to traditional outlets, no matter their problems, you can help provide an environment where legitimacy is encouraged. We have become too spoiled by the internet and the amount of news we can access for free, and people are pissed they can't read WaPo or NYT without subbing or because their ad blocker doesn't work. But somehow people wonder why Fake News took off. Because  we allowed it to. Oliver isn't asking people to help "strugling" traditional outlets. He's basically asking us to fight fake news by supporting as many legitimate traditional pay outlets as possible to fight fake news and doing our parts to become informed citizens. WaPo and NYT is just the start. Also look into WSJ, Financial Times;etc.

Good looking out on the Teen Vogue tweets. 5 dollar subscription? Wow.

Sadly, most places like NYT and WaPo charge more than $5 a year. Teen Vogue is a outlier (but if you've seen their paper magazines, they're tiny but packed with pages--most of them ads granted--for the price.

Speaking of Tweets and it being semi-related to GAF, I figured this'll be interesting for some of you:

Ah, so he's pretending. Hell of an actor!
The humour of the show is in the absurd reality of what he's presenting and the way the principal enablers (often politicians) defend them. "This thing is blatantly and obviously fucked once you scrutinize it, here's a clip of a company representative or politician more or less admit to it." That's the concept of the show. In-between, John Oliver emotes exaggeratedly and tells some skip-worthy jokes. Eh, so what? Maybe you perceive that as pandering and being talked down to? I wouldn't necessarily disagree, that stuff makes me cringe, too.

Just look at this for a minute and tell me it isn't funny:

The set-up and then the diagram from a training manual showing a literal cycle of debt? I mean - come on. That is too good. You don't have to be a a sardonic foreigner to be able to laugh at that.

John Oliver treats the US like it's one big zoo and has no respect or reverence for it on really any level.
So exactly how it deserves to be treated, then.

There was a time I enjoyed Last Week Tonight but it is starting to feel stale now.  I don't know if he ran out of really juicy topics or if the gimmick has run its course.

Woof. Made me want to abandon the regional standup comedy game and try my hand at magic.

Strawman ahoy

Living in a country where media and news organizations probably receives a lot more funding than in the US, I feel safe in telling it doesn't help that much.
And sure I chose the most extreme example but it's a decent illustration of some of the problem with public owned media.

He uses the exact same fucking jokes each and every week. He has a weekly show that became stale a lot faster than the Daily Show that was, well, daily. Not to mention he overplayed his hand with the shilling for Clinton who the younger generations, his audience, kind of hate. I still remember that pathetic segment on Clinton scandals, Jesus Christ, that one was cringeworthy.
