If you actually want real answers (I doubt you do):
Still dont understand if its a fighter or ??
It's a fighter. People like fighters with lots of characters, stages and content, especially if it contains content sourced from games they already like. Franchises in the latest Smash game:
- Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Metroid, etc.
- Pac-Man
- Mega-Man
- Bayonetta
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Final Fantasy 7
- Street Fighter
I cant believe millions of people buy this, why not get a real fighting game?
Traditional fighting games are usually seen as unapproachable to Smash's audience. It's part of the reason Mortal Kombat sold gangbusters, it's seen as easier to get into when people just want to sit down for an hour or two and fight each other.
The game straight up just doesn't have traditional combos. Every move in the game is a button or a button + an analogue direction. Casual gamers like this. Add on items and they can at least hang with much better players to an extent (see also, Mario Kart.)
In fact Mario Kart is a good analogy. You might as well be asking people why they don't play Gran Turismo instead.
